    You mean… he’s a person of colour?

I can see not much gets past you. He is a Catholic apparently, so no change there then.
Maybe someone really different this time?

Bookies favourite for next Pope seems to be Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana. A bit different from his predecessors in at least one respect …

I’ve a suspicion that I’ll use these for 12-18 months and then possibly bump them down to be winter/training wheels

And you’ll know you’ve become a real roadie when your hack winter wheels are old Mavic SSC on Campag C Record :D

It’s called “Neon Red”, but it’s orange IMO!

Still an interesting colour though. Especially as part of a tasteful combination

The speed he rides, the chain’s probably clinging on for dear life.

So he’s following the STW trend then, and gone 1×10. Or 1×11 even.

I’m glad I don’t work on the Tesco meat counter. It must be like flogging a dead horse.

Yes, ‘steak frites’ in Belgian cafes. No problem.
But mayonnaise on chips, now that really is disgusting.

the suggested target is to see 12% of the country covered in woodland by 2060

Brilliant. Woodland cover of the UK is already 13%.

Maybe they should fit cars with big lights at the front so they can see stuff? And brakes to control their speed?

I have had one for nearly 20 years ever since we did a job for some men with big moustaches who had them as standard issue

The Village People? Maybe you misunderstood the term ‘Leather Man’?

Gifted riders have often won their first Tour or come close (Anquetil, Mercx, Hinault, Lemond… )

I believe Anquetil was partial to the odd amphetamine or two.

How about fractal cranks, giving you an effective crank length of infinity?
Or hyper-cranks, that exist in 4 dimensions instead of the usual 3?
This guy is just so 19th century in his outlook.

Yes, but he’s compensated for that by having a large letter Z on the side – in red!
Z is the 2nd fastest letter in the alphabet (X being faster, obviously) and red is the fastest colour there is.

Why bother with L-shaped cranks when you can have perpetual motion ones?

    rusty90

you have a longer crank arm distance from the bb without the increased pedal diameter.

So the pedal’s further away from the BB, giving greater torque, but also the same distance away from the BB, keeping the pedal diameter the same as a normal crank. Gosh that’s clever.

Notice he’s started a new gearing niche – 0 speed (no chain)

I had a Focus before which was slightly smaller externally, but made much better use of its space

Fair enough, but I don’t imagine the Focus did 0-60 in 5.7. Life is all about compromise :D

I nearly bought an XT Forester

You don’t know what you’re missing. Fast and corners like a dream. Big enough to get two bikes in the back (with the rear seats down).
Would help to have your own oil well, it drinks petrol at a furious rate (certainly the way Mrs Rusty drives it). Nothing like burning off a boy racer with 2 dogs looking at him out the back window.
Our butcher’s got the STI version which is seriously fast.

Although for £160 a head, I’d expect some kind of spiritual or out-of-body experience

I think that’s more or less what they’re trying to offer. Anything that can get Michel Roux Jr shaking his head in amazement and saying “Wow, this is just incredible” must be pretty special. Although I doubt he had to shell out the £160.

First time I tried SPDs: coming up to traffic lights, I thought I’d have a go at that thing I’d seen roadies do, where they stop and stay clipped in, holding onto a railing.

    Pah, real roadies trackstand :-)

The Airarms mentioned above is a cracker too for a springer, heavy but nicely balanced

If you want a springer then the Airarms Pro Sport is the Rolls Royce of springers. Sold mine as it was far too heavy for my girly little arms (went down the .22 rimfire route instead).
Go and read up the options at AirgunBBS[/url], but be warned they suffer fools and newbies even less gladly than STW :-)

Road levers pull slightly less cable than mtb levers, so a 10 speed mtb mech slightly undershifts.
    10x cassette + STI road levers + 10x mtb mech doesn’t work – I know I’ve tried it.
10x cassette + STI road levers + 9x mtb mech does work – I know I’ve tried it.

A bit naughty riding on the pavement like that, but I can’t see anyone reporting him to the police.
“So can you give a description of this cyclist madam?”
    “Er, well …”

Go for it. It’s counter-intuitive, but trust me, it does work (for Shimano anyway, don’t know about SRAM)

    rusty90

Not with road levers and MTB mech – different pull ratio or something.

Works with Shimano – I run 10 speed Ultegra STI levers with a 10 speed cassette using an XT 9 speed mech.

Can someone actually describe for me what you would do if you puncture miles from home on a recreational ride?

You carry an old pre-glued tub strapped to the back of your saddle with a toe strap and fit that.

    http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2012/11/12/whats-in-store-this-winter-responding-to-the-headlines/%5B/url%5D

It seems that it is the time of year for colourful headlines about an impending big freeze.

Ultimately, we’re heading into winter and we expect winter to be colder than the rest of the year – but it’s too early to say exactly what temperatures we can expect or where and when we might see snow

Sounds like you need a unicycle. No sense in making it too easy.

They did the same in Carmarthen a few years back. Lovely new livestock mart out of town that’s much easier to use and a new multi-screen cinema that means I didn’t have to drive to Swansea to see Skyfall.
    Win win in my opinion.
