The no cycling sign is off to the left down to the upper reservoir

Did this last year and met no one except some girls on a DoE jaunt who all insisted on taking my photo, as they were amazed to see someone riding a bike on what they regarded as the equivalent of Everest base camp.
May be more people around (and less friendly) in the grouse shooting season.

What if the bike was nearer 20lb?

Stop it Matt, I’m supposed to be working.
    Oh, alright then
You need roughly 1m3 of helium to lift 1kg
So 20lbs (9kg) needs 9m3 of helium, giving a balloon 1.6m (about 5 foot) in diameter.
Although that doesn’t really work because in order to inflate the balloon the helium would need to be under pressure so would weigh more so the balloon would need to be bigger than that.

Quick back of the envelope calculation

Density of air is 1.25 kg/m3
To lift a 12.5 kg bike (27lbs) you need to displace 10m3 of air
Assuming a gas of zero density you’d need a balloon 2.66 metres in diameter. (Can’t be bothered to work out what size you’d need for a helium balloon, but it would be larger)

Balloon in video is clearly less than 2.66m (looks less than 1m) therefore it’s a fake.

Yeah, but there was that amazing moment when Wiggo in yellow led Cav out on the Champs-Élysées. How mental was that?

One Brit in yellow leading out another in rainbow stripes. A high point for British cycling

Are you running an XT front mech rusty?

Yep, top pull double. Full XT drive train on an Italian frame. Let the purists sniff, but it works for me.

Rusty what’s your setup with the 42/30, are you running square taper cranks/STIs?

XT M785 2×10 chainset with TA Chinook rings, 11-32 XT 10 speed cassette, XT 9 Speed rear mech, Ultegra 10 speed STI shifters and TRP CX8.4 V brakes.

doing it on dropped bars is virtually unheard of outside the UK

I know what you mean. I met a German cycle-tourist in Lake Garda last year. His saddle and handlebars seem to have come off an exercise bike and he was carrying more luggage on his bike than I’d brought by plane. But as he explained, he wasn’t in a hurry.

I’m not in the least bit macho about it. I’ll go as low as the kit allows and freewheel at the top end

Me too. My ‘cross’ bike (off-road tourer really) has an XT drive train with 42/30 x 11-32. This is low enough to get up the 1000ft fire road climb that is the start of my regular rides in comfort whilst still having a top gear bigger than Eddy Merckx used to set the World Hour Record with.
As a Granddad I’m not ashamed of my granny gear :-)

I’ve got a few old trade caps that I wear under my (road) helmet when it’s raining. Keeps rain out of my eyes and my bald head warm, whilst giving the ‘grizzled old pro’ look.

I’ve also got a genuine yellow Campagnolo cap from the 1991 Tour de France that I had to fight an old French lady for. Far too valuable to ever wear.

If you do wear one, try to look like this :

    Not this :

But how does he get his bike back?

Dual brake levers, hi-rise stem; just like Merckx used to ride. And secured by chaining two spokes to the bike rack.

IANAL but sounds like criminal damage to me. If someone had parked their car in a prohibited spot, the attendant wouldn’t be allowed to smash the car windscreen in order to move it would they?

I dont understand why you would start the Giro in Northern Ireland.

Coming back from Lake Garda last year we got held up on the way to Verona airport by the Tour of Poland of all things.

At school in the ’70s it was fashionable to talk like a cockney gangster. In retrospect a bunch of Welsh schoolboys all trying to sound like Michael Caine in Get Carter must have been pretty funny.
