The original ‘bivi bag’ was a great big orange plastic bag and I was certainly taught not to put my head in it and that seemed reasonable.

I think getting into it feet first is the recommended practice.

I built a wheel once when pissed (actually I used to do that a lot without any issues usually)

    What could possibly go wrong?

Wouldn’t surprise me if BenCooper is a paid member of the SNP/Yes campaign, popped on this forum to drum up some support. Stranger things have happened I’m sure.

No, Ben is a long standing member of STW and a well respected bicycle builder (albeit it with a strange obsession with small wheel sizes) as a quick look at his posts would immediately show.

the act of riding bicycles off road (which is what we do) had been done for a loooooong time before they did it.
Why should we ignore those who had ridden bikes off road all those years before? They are a part of the story too.

Indeed. Worth remembering people like Walter Robinson, who didn’t invent a new type of bicycle but just rode bikes over mountains.

My Hope hubs have survived 2 Welsh winters and are still going strong (and as noisy as ever) but the QR skewers are useless. I want them to release when I’m removing a wheel, not at some random point during a ride.

Or are we saying the crash was caused by F1 style him getting on the power to early

I think we’re saying that an man on a bicycle fell off during a bicycle race. Which isn’t totally unheard of.

I did the MBLA2 at PyB last year and loved it. £250, which isn’t too bad a price for 2 nights accommodation and all food in addition to the training. (£125 for just the assessment with no accommodation was a bit pricier)
A great buzz at PyB with a real sense of history about the place. Did the REC 1st aid there as well. I’d recommend it.

Yeh, go for it officerfriendly, just without a whacking great knife – as others have said something like an Opinel (and a sharpener) will be fine.
Fortunately I’m old enough to have grown up in an age when you could get away with just about anything outdoors, as long as you didn’t do any actual damage (or get caught).
Keeping warm and dry might be your main problem – the old adage is that the limits of survival are 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without warmth, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. Bivi bags aren’t fashionable these days (fancy group shelters being the in thing) but might be worth having.
You could also look at getting involved in something more organised (again, not so fashionable these days) – Duke of Edinburgh, Scouts, Cadets etc.
Best of luck anyway, better than sitting on your arse with an xbox!

Or perhaps that’s why Chris Froome always stares at his stem. Its got a little dial showing charge remaining

So that’s why his domestiques are always dropping back to the team car – it’s to fetch new batteries, not energy gels!

my guess is that that lord harley is the worst kind of weaselly, venal, bulshitting tossrag

The judge would seem to agree with you. Judge criticises lawyer for ‘Harry Potter’ appearance

Long-haired Alan Blacker appeared with St John Ambulance medals and ribbons on his breast during a trial in Cardiff Crown Court.

Judge David Wynn Morgan also questioned Mr Blacker’s right as a solicitor advocate to wear the robes and wig of a barrister.

During the trial, Mr Blacker had used the name Lord Harley, saying it was an Irish peerage inherited from his father.

But Judge Morgan was unimpressed by his appearance and after the trial told him: “If you want look like something out of Harry Potter you can forget coming to this court ever again.”

Or just squirt them with a lead-infused jet of cold air from a Weihrauch hw100. It guarantees that they won’t do it again, and it’s still fun! Yey!

Boasting about illegal firearm* usage on a public forum? Very clever.

It’ll be fun to see whether we lose in the dying seconds by throwing away a small lead or squander a scoring chance while chasing a small deficit.

I thought the standard game plan was to allow opponents to get a huge lead in the first half, play like madmen in the second half to get to within 3 points of a win then give away a penalty inches away from the try line in the dying seconds of the game?

Last time I went to the Millenium was to watch Wales lose to Samoa :-(

Yes, it’s hard to say if Cryptonomicon is SF or not – and the sort-of sequels, the Baroque Cycle.

Working my way through the Baroque Cycle at the moment. Taken me two months to get to the third book.
He’s more or less unique, definitely not mainstream SciFi. Historical Science Fiction (HiSciFi?), or Alchemical Fiction. Absolutely fascinating none the less.

I’m not sure why they were riding together as they didn’t seem to like each other very much…

The man in front is an American postman who is delivering a letter to the house on the top of the hill.
The man behind is an Italian pirate who wants to steal the letter as he believes it contains a treasure map.
    Hope that clarifies things.

The only hotel in Skipton to have experienced a drive-by shooting!

We’ve always had a room at the back overlooking the canal. I’ll keep a look out for narrow boat owners with Uzis next time. :D

There’s a circuit out of settle which I think goes to malham tarn, starts a bit meh, but gets quite good.

Yes, done that a couple of times. Starts off with a soul-destroying climb, but is pretty good after that. As B.A.Nana says, Dales are very much XC territory rather than technical, which is why I like it.

A good selection of routes with .gpx files at http://www.pedalnorth.com/content/yorkshire-dales-mtb-routes

Many places in the Dales get booked up well in advance. I’ve stayed at the Rendezvous hotel in Skipton[/url] before. Pretty bike friendly for a big(ish) hotel.

It’s missing a (rather important) bit. There should be a flat table bit that slides onto the two prongs with guides to track the rim. Unless you’ve got that it’s unusable.
