Current set up (for a 5’10” rider with long arms)
    Brew Pro XL frame
    Odyssey 41thermal race forks
    S&M Beringer LT bars
    Profile 180mm cranks
    Sun BFR 36 hole wheels
    Primo mag pedals
    Selle roadie saddle
    Deore V brake
Classic gearing is 44-16, so an equivalent of that is needed (i’ve got a 25 on the front)

Could probably knock a couple of pounds out of it with lighter wheels, carbon forks and alu frame.

42 and rode mine for the first time in ages today.
Don’t think i’ll ever get rid of one altogether and hoping the kids will want to race or go to the skatepark in a couple of years time with their old man.

Prepare to have an aching body though, even if its only from riding not crashing.

Don’t underestimate the difference that specific classes can make to your working life and stress levels.
I currently teach Yr10, Yr11, 6th form, full time FE, Apprentices and full cost adults from site and the differences between each group with regards behaviour, attitude to learning, motivation and ability is enormous.

With regards security, good luck getting into FE at the moment as staff cuts are in full swing.
The yearly re-shuffle/cull of management makes it a risky move to go up in the organisation as well.

Don’t go into this blind either, be very aware that education IS A BUSINESS these days probably as much as a service. 🙁 👿

Workload and pressure for results for me as a Lecturer are ridiculous and almost crippling.
    It’s sometimes a bit like trying to squeeze a 4″ turd through a 2″ bumhole! 😕

Having said that, i’ve been earning every day this week which is more than can be said for the blokes on site i used to work with.

Chainring is a stronglight from high on bikes, and the guard is from BBG in the States (about £12 plus postage).

I wouldn’t know ernie, i don’t suffer from depression. I’ve been a bit tied up fighting my own illness the last 10 years to look too deeply into anyone elses 😕

The family/riding thing gets on my tits sometimes, but to say it depresses me would be a lie.

    Anyway, i’m off out for a rid…..to a family farm! 🙂

I have just been accused of not having a sense of humour for not laughing at an illness that ruined my life for years. Hilarious 😀

OCD IS a serious mental illness, and in many cases nothing to do with routines.
I heve no desire to ask you to stop talking of your routines, just please don’t label them as OCD.

“The key difference that segregates little quirks, often referred to by people as being ‘a bit OCD’, from the actual disorder is when the distressing and unwanted experience of obsessions and compulsions impacts to a significant level upon a person’s everyday functioning – this represents a principal component in the clinical diagnosis of Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder.”

“In fact, it can be so debilitating and disabling that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has actually ranked OCD in the top ten of the most disabling illnesses of any kind, in terms of lost earnings and diminished quality of life.” OCD_UK website.

p.s. as for my sense of humour, it’s very much intact thankyou.

The things you are describing are so far from the reality of real OCD.

A a long term sufferer who’s life was ruined for years by this spiteful illness, i could tell you some pretty horrific tales of the mess sufferers get themselves into coping with and fighting these illogical compulsions.

But hey, it’s the MENTAL ILLNESS it’s ok to take the piss out of, so carry on lads.

Please visit http://www.ocduk.org/ocd read some of the facts and see if it still sounds funny.

Don’t want to rant or upset people, but need to raise awareness. Funding for treatment is poor and the longer this is seen as a joke the longer this will continue.

    Thanks

Not sure about underrated, but a few that may have slipped under the radar for some:

    Helmet – Meantime
    Quicksand – Slip
Refused – The shape of punk to come
The Young Gods – L’eau rouge
    The Wedding Present – Seamonsters
Lucero – That much further west
Life of Agony – Soul searching sun
    Cave In – Antenna
Entombed – To ride, shoot straight and speak the truth
The get up kids – Something to write home about
    Promise Ring – Very emergency
    Leatherface – Mush
Seafood – When do we start fighting
    Seaweed – Four
    …….could go on forever 🙂

Quite a difference in shape of hoods, so definetely try to hold a few, even if only in a shop. Shimano/sram more rounded/bigger feeling, campag (modern ergo) angles slightly inwards with not such a large ‘knob’ to rest your hands on.
I run Campag chorus carbon 11 speed on my main bike and am very happy with it.
It was however an emotional choice rather than anything else as i wanted Campag whatever 🙂
I’ve used shimano and sram a few times and they all work fine, so you cant really go wrong. You do get 11 instead of 10 gears with Athena though, not that that really matters much.

Fair few Scotts down here. Bikelab used to sell them and now Ride are, so expect to see even more soon. Plenty of Specs and Cannondales from Primera, but no Giants though as no decent dealer.

Oh, and my crappy inbred 🙂

Loads of Treks in the Purbecks, but thats mainly because Ride Cycleworks down here sell them and are very active as regards organising group rides and encouraging newbies. Plenty of Oranges and Santa Cruz for the same reason.

Top End? Add a couple of thousand to the budget then 🙂

Still, £1500 should get you something rather nice. Need to be carbon?

Bottle or two depending on distance/weather.

Multitool, co2 canisters, tube, tyre lever in small saddle pack.

Door key and tenner in sunglass cover in pocket.
    Phone in pocket.
    Food/gels in pocket.
    co2 pump thing in pocket.
Gilet in pocket if not wearing and weather looks dodgy.

@Rorschach so you only run an inside ring and use a toothless 42 on the outside? Hmm, like the idea of that. Got any pictures of how that looks?

I’d rather stop for a cream tea than at a pub thanks… and if i did want to stop at a pub, it’d probably be the Scott Arms as the view is better.
