Ride up a hill without feeling knackered.

Quite liking the idea of this being a semi serious/social with a few who haven’t ridden in groups before and a few who have. Could be a bit of a laugh.

So, so far we’ve got a North Hampshire, London>Brighton, West London loop, Oxford>Chichester, Chilterns ride.

That’s about 300 miles so far! Better make it a weekender!! 😕

Only tricky thing i can see is setting a pace.

With mtb’s its ok as the quicker ones can wait at a gate or something and have a chat, but you go a long way on a road ride before you get to an obvious place to stop and wait.

You may need to set a rough average speed (maybe 15mph?) to make sure the racing snakes know what they’re letting themselves in for and don’t get the hump hanging around all day.

    No labels here.

Bike wise i hardly ride my mountainbike much these days. Road is much easier to fit in around the family and on a good day more enjoyable too.

Personally, i’d go second hand or spend more money.

Is he a big lad? Starter bikes tend to be shortish in the top tube (20.5″ ish) and that will be a bit cramped on a race track if he’s much over 5’7″ ish (OK for street/park if you like it tight). Top tube length is much more noticeable on bmx’s than mtb’s and even 1/4″ makes a fair difference. Also Hi-ten steel will be pretty heavy compared to 4130 or Alu.
1 piece cranks don’t take much bending either (12 stone and a heavy landing should see the end of them or the pedals if they’re plastic).

Should be able to pick up something a bit better/more suitable than that with a bit of searching, although that bike would get him started and is better than nothing.

Edit – if he could double his budget i’ve got something really nice for sale 😉

In this country i’ll take the bike.

Other parts of the world then yeah, i’ll go along with you.

Can’t be doing with the winter suit, cold carpark, 2 ft of slop, audi drivers, family camp sites, dirty sea ..blah blah.

Right time, right place, best sport/fun in the world. Just not here and not now. 🙁

Worst – sealskin socks (overpriced and overrated)

On a positive note, the missus and kids were stuck away at her parents last night and it looks like tonight as well. First decent nights sleep i’ve had for 10 months!

About 10 minutes drive to the Sandbanks ferry and the Purbecks 😛 or ride from home for more local heath stuff and country laned tarmac.

I’ve entered some spring sportives as motivation to make sure i get some miles in through the winter. Managed to do a few hours the last couple of weekends, so it seems to be working.

One of these Futureboy. £1k for the frame then built with an unused groupset pulled off a bike the LBS had that they wanted the frame from, and a fork that was brought in as a warranty replacement for a customer who didn’t want it as the graphics were wrong (Scott CR1 silly light full carbon).
Only compromise really is the wheels which are a bit basic but kept the budget sensible.

Alternatives for top quality on a budget.

2010 stuff going cheapish, so spesh tarmac, cannondale, trek madone, giant etc.

new stuff – cube, focus, bianchi are resonable value. Boardman is obviously value if that’s your sort of thing. Depends what spec you want really and what the budget is.

My LBS built me up a ti frame with chorus 11 speed group for a surprisingly decent price (although the missus might not agree), so dont rule out a build rather than a complete.

Good enough for Gilbert and the boys, good enough for me.

They’ve just won a court case against Cervelo for cervelo stealing their technology, so they must be pretty hot.
Supposed to be VERY stiff apparently.

Purbecks is getting its annual winter rest as the ferry is out of action for servicing. Many locals will be riding elsewhere (Wareham Forest or Canford Heath) for a month or so. Gives the trails a chance to recover a bit too. Puddletown could be ok this time of year, but haven’t ridden there for ages so not sure of current trail situation / tree clearance.
As said, New Forest is not really worth the hassle of falling out with horse riders for.
