Personally, after years of riding motorbikes and bmx/mountainbikes, i think cornering on a road bike is more similar to motorbikes.

Road positioning, hitting apex’s, pushing the front into the corners, weighting, lean angles.

Hooning into and out of roundabouts is a pretty similar sensation, just slower and with less clothes on. 🙂

Sounds like a good excuse for MM and me to pop down your way for a road ride :-).

    See ya soon

Got this about 16 months ago. Light enough, stiff enough, comfy enough, not silly expensive either (frame under a grand). Not ridden a carbon bike to compare it to, but i like it.

Several rides in the Purbecks 😀

Monkey world, just down the road from the tank museum, loads of playgrounds for kids as well as the monkeys.

Kingston Maurward (gardens, animals) is close by and good for small kids.

‘but I’d sell both of those and keep my old OM10 with manual adaptor, if I needed the money desperately’

Want another one? I’m selling mine at the moment, with manual adaptor, 200mm lens, 2x convertor and stock 50mm lens. All in a lovely (and dusty) bag. 🙂

To be fair, Basingstoke is alright. No worse than any other town of that size. Town centre is pretty good now they’ve done it up, couple of big cinemas, ice rink, good and bad schools, 2 colleges, some nice parks for the kids.

Like most towns there are good and not so good parts to live, but if you cant afford somewhere pleasant in town you definetely wont be able to afford anything in the surrounding villages.

Not sure what its like at night these days as i haven’t been out there for ages, but the women must be pretty desperate, as 2 of them have married me 😉

Although i’d still rather live in Andover 🙂

@Captain Flashheart – Village not station. I’ve done plenty of work around that way too, did my apprenticeship in Abbots Ann (another good option).

p.s. nice work agent flashheart, recommending Tidworth to the Scottish fella, that should have him heading back north pretty sharpish 😉

‘You could look around Tidworth area’ – yeah, you could, but i would definetely give it the swerve unless you’re in the military.

+1 for Grateley/Monxton/Quarley. My old dear is from Grateley and i spent ages wandering aroung the countryside with my Nan and Grandad there in the 70s.

Bracknell wont be cheaper (and its Bracknell!!).
Farnham’s nice, as is Alton, but will be expensive.
If you need 3 bedrooms, then you’ll need about £200k to get somewhere quiet/not on an estate (a LOT more than that in certain towns/villages mentioned).

Yeah, Hartley Wintney is nice (although on the more expensive London side of town).

Whats the budget – house needs? It ain’t a cheap area.

If you are commuting by car then Salisbury is too far. By train it would be fine. Winchester similar if a little easier drive.
How near do you need to be to a town centre? Only towns within easy reach are Andover (cheaper than Blazingsmoke), Alton, Whitchurch (more of a big village).
If you can handle being 5 miles or so out of town (and can afford it) then loads of lovely villages to choose from. As a native of the Bourne Valley, you cant go wrong with there (apart from all the new money, luvvie posh nobs ).

Edit – Newbury is driveable, but not for me thanks. Hungerford’s quite nice but a bit of a trek. Kingsclere – close but not a lot there. Overton would be ok, similar to Whitchurch (some shops but not really a town centre as such).

Golf (not much since the kids came along but most weeks before).
Did a 10k the other week, but hate running so in no rush to do another.
Used to surf loads, but not in the last 10 years.
Used to play Sunday league footy (too old now).

Pretty much the same. Hardly anyone is on custom frames these days and the weight limit on pro bikes means their bikes are heavier than a lot of posh shop bought bikes.

As a Lecturer in an FE College, if i wanted to move out of catchment it would have to be at least an hours drive away. Think i’ll settle for the 3 miles ride over the heath 🙂

Never had any problems out of work (touch wood) despite having some ‘interesting’ students.

If you’re already doing 5k in 25 mins you have nothing to worry about.

I did the British 10k in London 2 days ago with no training whatsoever (i went for a 20 minute jog a week before and that was literally the only time i had run in over a year) and came home in an hour and in one piece. I’m not particularly fit and a couple of stone overweight and probably do 50-100 road bike miles a week if that helps.

Not many people move TO Blazingsmoke! 😯

Some decent riding around there if you know where to look. Cinnamon Girl has routes all over the place up that way that she could probably share.
Head out Newbury/Andover direction for some good stuff in the collingbourne woods area.

Second hand for me at that budget. Should get something pretty nice with ultegra/105 or campag or SRAM equivelent for that much, with a basic carbon or tasty aluminium / alu & carbon stayed frame.

Lynskey Cooper – built with chorus 11 speed for significantly less than your budget. Love it.
