If your speccing from new I’d go for wider rims like 719’s. Nothing wrong with 717’s, mine have taken some abuse & stayed running true, but they look very very skinny with big (2.35) tyres. Cant say I’ve felt them roll.

I can see taylforth’s point, I had a Summer Season & didnt like the slack head angle. It would be even worse with a tall fork like that. Std 456 would be a better choice, especially if its your year round do-it-all bike (in my opinion). I’ve not tried a 456 though, just a SS & an Inbred. The Inbred has surprised me the most. With a 130mm fork its perfect.

I’d give superstar rotors a few months before I’d buy some, just in case they prove less than reliable. Dont get me wrong, I’ve generally got on well with their kit, but they arent exactly cheap. Plenty of experience with Hope floaters here, & they are ok. I had one where the rivets came loose, a press sorted it.

On one have been pretty good so far having arranged collection swiftly.

Its a shame that the phone calls & emailed photographs of my cracked year old Inbred have not elicited the same response. Having to foot the bill for sending it back myself, & waiting a week now without so much as an email or phone call to update has dimmed my veiw of On-One somewhat.

Glad to hear most folk experienced better CS than I have. 🙁

If 1 & 2 stay as they are then surely it wouldnt make any difference.

We drove up into the Atherton Tablelands inland from Cairns, temps were perfect, good bit fresher than the coast. Some amazing places, & lots of interesting looking trails. Can’t remember the name, but we went to a huge lake, Tinaroo possibly ? That area looked perfect for biking.

Don’t discount the normal Inbred. It rides great with 130mm forks, & should be a smidgen lighter than the 456. You mentioned xc, so thought I’d offer this up. I’ve had a couple of nice HT’s, Pace, Soul, & the Inbred was (for me), as good as the Soul. I’m only swapping because of this 29er mullarkey. 456 is a legend. Christ, some folk spend more on a cassette.

That’s a long tiller. Might be worth looking at the keel.

If your more of a trail rider the std Inbred might be more comfy, & it rides lovely with a 130mm fork.

Not the Scandal, but I have an Inbred 29er. Love it because its so different to my FS. I think they compliment each other because there are things that one does far better than the other & vice versa. It makes me appreciate each accordingly. Guessing a Sacandal will come in lighter, but my Inbred (with On-One carbon rigids) is 24lb.

Your local vets will have a big can of spray. Cant remember what it was called. Give each room a good spray then lock-up the house for a few hours. It kills everything. Not cheap, about £20 I think.

You should see the Hone cranks I dishwashered, its made the black coating go all chalky. Stuff like mechs & cassettes come up spotless.
Not about to chuck £50’s worth of Hex in though.

I bet the smug **** wouldnt be so cocky if it were a van full of builders that had taken offence to his red light jumping.

If I’m ever to be able to afford to fly somewhere I fully expect to have to completely dismantle the bike. Surley a road bike is quite a fragile object in the hands of some of the rsoles that unload planes. Like they really give a rats ass if a bike worth 6 months of their salary gets broken.

That airline pilot with the right idea, with his folding Inbred.

Is this the money from that Nigerian chaps uncle who perished in the plane crash…

An 03/04 Enduro would make a great buy. I was 17st & mine was spot on. £500 is doable. Quite a challenge actually.

Std shock pump will do. Set the sag first. About 25-30% when sitting on the bike. Put same air in the top & bottom chambers as a start. Floodgate is the point at which the fork will work again when locked out & it hits a bump. For road you’d lock the fork & put the floodgate on min. For off road put it on max then wind back about halfway. Your Reba will have a lockout lever on top of the right leg as you look down on it. In the middle of this is the floodgate adjuster. The rebound will have the most effect, its the red knob at the bottom of the right leg. Screw this in all the way & the fork will extend slowly after compressing. Again wind it back out about half way ad a start. Compression damping will slow down the fork ad it compresses. This is usually done with the same lever as the lockout, albeit a smaller movement.
Honest advice, find a bit of varied trail & spend a few hours trying different settings, but write down each one. You’ll soon find what works for you. Take your shock pump along.

Not a chance. Whatever resins used would just melt away surely. I’d be looking at a two-pack finish, with a stabiliser over the carbon. It would need more prep but would be fine. A car sprayer could probably do it for you.

I thought it wad the Superstar ones that were Nukeproofs without the daft lettering…? Or are the SS ones the Exotics as well…?
Either way, I love the feel from my carbon forks.

Bleed screw…poke with a dart or compass point to fettle it out.
Piston…lever other piston back in with flat screwdriver while pumping the lever gently. Stuck piston should start to move. When it does let it come out a few mm then push back & repeat. Then spray with some WD40. Keep on until both move freely. Mount the caliper upside down on one bolt to hold it steady while you work.

Any Orange 5 riders reading this…
I looked a new Orange 5 the other day. They seem to have gone really slack these days, (head angle wise). How do they fare as an all-day bike ?

Currently on a Ventana El-Ciclon. Best full-suspension I’ve ridden, but the Orange 5 thing just wont let me go. 😕

Ditto the 29er thing. As a winter ht/ss/short blast ride they are excellent. Nothing like what I’d expected. And if it ever sees tarmac, much better than a 26″. Every man & his dog seems to want a 29er these days, so guess the cat is out of the bag. 🙂

Use a tube cutter instead. Should go through an alloy steerer ok.

Is it the first time its been removed ? Its probably glued at the factory. Try tightening a bit first to break the bond.

Have you informed the Police that a branch tried to push you infront of traffic ?

It was probably Special Branch, undercover.

Back in Nam, just before the Tet offensive Charlie came over the wire next to my position. I spent 11 hours in intensive hand to hand combat. Even now I can’t pass a Chinese takeaway without the reflex to grab my ankle knife or grasp around for a M16.

    LMFAO. Seriously. 🙂

Have XT hubs on TN719’s on mine. Probably not same build as Shimano wheels, but hubs are good. Usual faff with cup & cone adjustment after a rebuild, but ok once done. Just swapped rear for Surly SS hub & White Ons’ freewheel, is way better running ss than XT hub.

The cross city rail line goes from University right across town & out to Lichfield. Busy though. Lichfield would put you 8 miles from the Chase & Snowdrome. Would need a car though.

I’d leave the Midland in flash by the way. Hate the place. Born & bred here, but its time to shift nearer the sea.

There’s a group who work at the Boots HQ, who ride regularly. I’ve been along with them, & shown them round Cannock Chase a few times. Top bunch of lads & lasses. Really nice folk. They even send the rides out as Outlook meeting requests & everything. I’ll put you in touch if you like.

Cash is king. If you can’t afford it , dinnae buy it.

Mortgage was the only thing I ever financed.

Wondered when the first one would pop up. 😉

I’ve never bought a new bike. Always s/h, bought a new frame a couple of times. Picked up my Ventana s/h, for £450. New was about £1500 IIRC.
    I’m just tight.
If I ever hanker after a new bike I’d use 0% if the sums worked, but I’m guessing your going to be paying full RRP.

I use a peice of thick pipe lagging & a big ‘O’ ring looped around the bar. Works a treat. I got the ‘O’ rings from a supplier through work. Engineering samples, obviously. 😉

I sank 5 of those concrete fence posts into the ground, smooth side up. Sat them onto small piles of concrete so I could get them all level. Lets me slide the shed out if needed, to get at the fence behind. It was also remarkably easy to do. Certainly quicker than putting up shuttering, mixing, pouring, tamping & all that. Having done plenty of concreting over the years, this approach was a doddle, but does lack the STW Extreme Engineering approach. 🙂

Nowt wrong with a 29er Inbred, although that Niner SIR9 would top my list if funds permitted.

And that bikemonger bloke above…without a doubt the most helpful chaps I’ve ever dealt with in my years of riding. Wish they were my LBS.
