I ride the forest right through winter, although lately have being staying on the labled trails as off piste has been a nightmare. The red is great now they have extended it however it does get very sloppy on the new extensions now. Blue route is basically a cycle path now. So don’t expect to get dirty on there. Not ridden many of the downhill trails over the winter so cant comment. If you do go off piste the Dowies are running fine, nothing to stodgey!

I’m in! Now to start working out what looks set to be a logistical nightmare!

I’m running 120tpi nates front and rear, I’m not completely sold and will be fitting a faster rolling tyre on the rear end shortly! I find two of them just too draggy!

Haven’t been up for a few days, Verds is as mentioned above basically a cycle foot path now so running really well. Freeminers is/was very sloppy especially on the new extensions where in places it was virtually unrideable. That said I’m up there tonight for a night ride so can report back if you like?

Nice, russyh! I thought the Fatty wasn’t Bluto-compatible (straight headtube, tapered steer I assumed) or was that the earlier Fatty frame?

Nope always been tapered i believe. My firs V1 Fatty frame was tapered but cracked. My V2 (this bike) is all but the same other than the new Seat tube and different brake mount. Slam69 do loads of custom OOF, in custom paint jobs to. CHeck out his facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/Fat69TheFatbikeshop/?fref=ts

I did mine myself, i couldn’t afford to BUild on all at once straight from the bat, so just upgraded over a few months. That way i could enjoy the bike and understand what i wanted to change.

Thanks Nick, I dont mind the white. It has a nice pearlescent flip to it. But wouldn’t be my first or even second choice. Hence why i went custom decal’s. Like i say when Smokestone launch the Henderson I will be placing an order. I have seen it through the development process and Slamman knows fatty’s! Plus it has some descent features like stealth reverb routing. Have to be honest its taken me longer than others to really like the fatbike. After upgrading to Bluto i really felt i had lost the initial charm, but as i get more miles under my belt I am really pleased with how the bike now rides. I still need to develop my technique as on tight switch backs or fast corners i dont carry enough speed so find the bike slow compared to my other normal bike. But appreciate thats me, needing to learn the specifics of riding a fatty. As per usual for me what started out as a cheap winter play thing has escalated quickly into an upgrade fest. But I do like having something unique to me and when riding with other fatty’s they are great fun.

So thought i would post some updated pics of my OOF now, i have spent more than a grand on her, but happy with how she now sits and rides. As my above post waiting for The new Smokestone frames to be launched which will save a bit of weight, support my LBS and are shaping up to be a great option. I have recently fitted the Aeffect cranks and a Absolute black Oval ring, with 11 speed XT. Tiny 26t chainring means The thing could climb a wall, but i do run out of gears on long flat fire roads, which is fine by me. Disapointed that the cranks have after 3 rides started to show significant heal rub! But what can you do!

Wheels are BR710’s on hope Fatsno Pro 2’s tubeless with Surley Nates 120tpi front and rear. Everyone raves on about the nate, but i find them very draggy so tempted to try something slightly faster rolling on the rear. Maybe once this current sloppy waether system passes and things harden up a little.

To be hoenst, if i was buying again now i would of gone for the Dune. Sadly it wasnt available at he time. I have upgraded nearly everything on my OOF. I am now waiting for Smokestone to release their frame which should be released in April. Luckily all my parts will swap over just the rear hub which will require new end caps.

Got to be honest the tubeless weight saving on Fatty’s is not worth the bother. However I think tubeless is a must if you are to run them at the correct pressures. I know my wheels have double the sealant NW’s do (at least) But the fact i no longer puncture and can run the correct pressures is reason enough for me. I’m sure there are loads of folk who will say they have never punctured a tube at 5psi after 10 years and 20k of fat bike miles, but for me tubeless is the only way to roll. My setup is BR710’s with Nates.

I was going to order a set, until I started looking at the additional cost of new BB, chain rings etc. I the end I opted for race face aefect, which were great value and a lovely set of cranks. Oh and run 24mm spindle so standard bb type!

So what’s people’s views on the jumbo jims on sand? Would it be a good tyre choice for battle of the beach? As much as I like the grip nates offer I am thing something a little lighter? But I am a battle of the beach virgin so would love others thoughts!

Those ones from flat out cycles are second hand though, regardless of them being off a new bike, they have still been fitted and as such are used!

Interesting that Dave, I recently changed to Nates front and Rear, but find they have made the bike feel very heavy and numb. I feel link I could do with some kind of compromise rear tyre that’s light, roles reasonably and has some traction in mud. Guess that’s the holy grail. The mamouths I had fitted before the nates were great until there was any kind of mud! They then became lethal.

In my experience…yes! Both my pike and Bluto were virtually dry when they arrived.

Best bike i ever owned! So much so I think I am going to buy another one in the new year! Should never have sold mine.

North wind, I fitted my aefect crank and absolute black chain ring yesterday and took my fatty out for a spin! Good choice, chain line is shocking on 1×11 OOF so I need to have a fiddle I think, will post a seep rate thread with pics later

Big annoyed, clicked on this earlier to order but being Christmas was with family despite the email link their website said discount applied until the 4/1/2016 so I thought given there was 14 in stock i wouldn’t rush and possibly make a mistake and add to order when I got home! Hey presto go to complete and code no longer valid! Not sure why I am suprised really – typical Planet X/On One

Ha, yes I noticed a few people I know give me a ribbing about chainring choice! It appears you are not a real man unless you can pedal up Everist with a 36t front ring!

Don’t think anyone said that to be fair? The 26t on a fatbike seems to be a fairly common thing. I have seen plenty of late. They climb wonderfully and I love the idea of spinning up virtually anything. Like I say I won’t be going that small on my bouncy 650b

I have just ordered an absolute black oval ring, at £52 posted! Hoping it arrives between Christmas and new year really so at least I can get out on the bike! I was going to go cinch cranks on my 6)0b as well but not sure I will bother now given the cost of the chainrings

Same as me fd3chris, but only on the fatty saw loads of fatty’s out on global fat bike day with 40t cassettes and 26t front rings. So I thought I would give it a blast

As above really, look pretty sweet, simple and light. I can see they will wear nicely with heal rub as well unlike shimano cranks!

Think I am gonna have to stomach it and pay the money for a chainring otherwise the fat bike is off the trails for another bloody month! New xt groupset turned up today ready to fit!

Anyone else have any ideas of options or am i just going to have to man up and shell out?

    Cheers guys however:
    Wolftooth – Sold out 26t
    Oneup – Only 32t
Absolute Black Oval – with shipping is £52! So its an option and i like Oval chainrings (Have one on my full Sus) just seems an awful lot of cash for a chainring.

The Cranks i purchased from Slam69. They are 100mm axle with 170mm crank arms. Look pretty sweet, reasonably light as well

I have an aefect say at the shop waiting for the chainring to come in for my fatty! Going to order another set for
    My full sus!

The crank comes with locking ring so all you need is the chainring of choice and a bb to fit. Should fit standard external 24mm axle bb. Which is the reason I went for it over the turbine or hope cranks. It’s starts getting pricey when you buy crank, Bb and chainring!

I ride the fod about 3 times a week and it’s particularly nasty at the moment! If you venture off anything other than the hardback trails! Epic fun but I have eaten an 11 speed chain in like 200 miles there.

I have a pair nates setup tubeless on br710’s. Had to get Slam69 to set up for me as I didn’t have a compressor at the time. They popped the bead on one side with a tube then set the other bead with a compressor.

I have a set of 710’s runnign on Hope Fatsno hubs, built by Slam man with decent spokes (cant remember which ones) and brass nipples. I run Nates front and rear and Bluto upfront on an OOF. I am about 90kg in riding kit and a rider thats pretty hard on kit. My BR710’s have not skipped a beat. Rims are perfect, hub is bomb proof. Even with lighter summer tyres i have not had a problem. Worth the money i have to say and the build quality of the product is second to none!

Sadly the bike is of the trails at the moment as i trashed the rear mech following an off. But i will continue to give them a kicking throughout the winter now!

Im running Nates front and rear 120tpi. Pretty happy with them, got clagged up last Tuesday mind and were as useless as every other tyre in those conditions!

Here is my V2 OOF, running BR710’s with Hope Fatsno hubs. Now fitted with Nates tubeless for the winter. I prefer a double on the fatty i can now just about winch the thing up anything. Still getting my head around tyre pressures. But getting there! I need to replace some of the groupset now, rear mech has just died and i need an XT cassette before i kill my new hope cheesey freehub. I have been looking at other fatty frames to upgrade to, but in all honesty I think i am just going to upgrade the bits on my oof

I like riding my fatty rigid, but fitting Blutos has as per Daves post above, really turned it into an all rounder. I’m still learning when it comes to tyre pressures which play a big part. However the Bluto’s really made general trail riding faster. I wouldn’t necessarily say it made it more enjoyable, just different. One thing i have found is that the Bluto’s need (for me anyway) some form of bottomless tokens. In fact I’m waiting for mine to arrive as they are very linear and I either blow through the travel or if increasing the air pressure completely counter the point of having them.
