  • How Long To Rebuild A Bike? – Back From The Dead

He reckons the 5 with a burly fork is ‘the one’

I would agree with him, just fitted some 36’s to mine and it’s absolutely epic

Not ridden the new Alpine 6 yet, but I have a 2017 new model Five and it’s an absolutely awesome bike. By far and away the best Five they have produced. When I first built it up I managed a built weight of 27 and half lbs. the bike felt so alive. I have added a tough of weight to it since and it feels just as nimble. There is very little that I have come across where the bike is the limiting factor. I just think the 6 would be overkill. For the majority of uk riding the Five is to be honest. Demo them both if I were you then decide.

Jesus wept. Sounds like OP and his BILneeds to go on some anger management classes.

Well maintained child’s bike breaks at the start of an unsigned ‘non’ official trail. LBS nearby helps out by fixing straight away, charges customer unfairly who then blows up over £10! Bloke the slams the shop, facilities and trail online. Largely because he was too aggressive in the shop to sort the issue out there and then….then to cap it all off plays the ‘im and engineer card’

Perhaps a strongly worded letter to the Mail next time?

Made my coffee break entertaining thanks

Amazing that a company whom has made its fortune selling anodised bits of alloy has gone for something so stealth! Most Un-hope like. Cranks are still shit mind

I went down the boostinator route, nicely made kit. Basically a new non drive end cap for my DT swiss hubs and a rotor spacer and longer bolts. Wheel needed re-dishing over which was a 2 minute job for my LBS which likely i could probably of done.

I wouldn’t of bought a new frame unless i was sure i could use my current wheelset. Really pleased with the setup, works perfectly. My friend has made his own kit with washers. Not nearly as neat and im pretty sure the cassette is not in the optimum position, but that’s a guess.

I have one, bought it as a stop gap whilst i awaited my Reverb replacement. Thing is, its so good i am not bothering to refit my reverb! Only issue with it is the short drop. Otherwise its the best dropper i have owned (he says a month into owenership)

I’m interested in the side wall issue on a RR, I love them as a spring/summer tyre. Running hans dampf through the winter which is OK but can’t wait to get my Razor back on in the summer. Perfect combos for a Magic Mary upfront

Specialized had an issue with some tyres sweating stans through the side walls. I believe they were exchanging them. My purgatory did it but my butcher grid didn’t. I just kept using it and topping up with stans to be honest

I am so fed up of mud. Can’t wait for summer again. It’s been pretty wet this winter again thanks to mild temperatures. It just makes everything stop working and such hard work. Thinking of building a winter single speed to get myself over it!

Dealer markup on a new car is about 2%*!

That’s for new cars not used and varies wildly between manufacturer. The front end margin on used cars are often much greater than new.

The margin is also calculated in different ways, can include supported trading bonuses etc.

I think its fair to say that ‘Most’ dealers now would trade away all of their front end margin and rely on the F&I income as well as volume bonuses. Which can equate to Serious money. Selling new cars at a loss is not a new thing. We were doing it 17 years ago when i was selling new cars. The growth of the internet and websites like Carwow, has really killed the art of selling new cars now and dealer groups are giving much more away as they struggle with increased new car sales targets.

Not all garages are at it …. but ive seen it. Im a stickler for checking work done in the book vs work done. to blindly believe that a lease car is better maintained and think its worth over the odds because it was a lease car is fools folly…

With respect thats nonsense. I work alongside some of the biggest leasing companies and they do not operate this kind of practice at all. I have also worked for some of the biggest dealer groups in the country and again it doesn’t happen. yes there are parameters set for work to be carried out. As an example i needed to make 2 trips a week apart to the same tyre place because my rear tyres were 0.4 of a mm “too good” Dealership service departments have bigger targets to hit than the sales teams now, they will up sell everything possible to the lease company. Furthermore if its a recommendation the lease company cannot refuse the work (what would happen if you as the driver then ran into a school bus stop) As with any used car, you are going to struggle to find out the previous users driving and maintenance habits, but the general condition and reports held by a lease company should help you make an informed decision.

So I have a tin, tried it and to be honest was unsure really the benefits outweighed the faff. It’s bloody messy stuff. Albeit not as horrible as a well used wet lube setup. I may give it another go and wife the side of the chain down with a solvent. I ride in the FOD about 3 times a week and I found after a week of winter riding and cleaning it needed another lube. Which is a truck load of hassle. So I went back to wet Lubes.

Will give it another go tonight, but I’m less convinced

What do you mean by your chainring is knackered? Is it dropping the chain all the time or just looks like a mess?

Just to point out a dealer will not have £2k across a used car anymore. Very rarely, used to work of around £1500 Martian prior to costs 10 years ago and the market is very different now. OP if you want some genuine advice about the price of the vehicle chuck me an email I am happy to help. Not willing to divulge what o do for a living on here, but always happy to help a fellow singletracker.

The used car market has changed dramatically of late, dealers no longer sell into their local area and compete for first page on auto trader so drive prices and margins down. F&I income often suplimebts the lack of front end margin now so you can get better deals if you take the dealers funding package, they even can be competitive as their commission is both front and back end loaded.

Again if you want any help with pricing drop me an email and I can do some homework for you.

To be fair then you are on your own. You have a couple of options.

    1) Tell the seller you are pointing out the error of his ways on the forum and will return the bike once he has transferred the money back to you. (you paid before he sent it to you) Give him the chance to do the right thing

    2) Suck it up and keep the bike

    3) Send it back under his terms.

Personally i would go down the first route. Tell him what you are doing, post his details on here and give him a chance to reply before actually publicly vilifying him/her. I personally would like to know who it is so i can be wary at a later date.

How did you pay OP, if via paypal goods raise a dispute. You will likely get a partial refund.

Just name and shame, the singletrack masses will soon come to a verdict. But be prepared for a certain amount of public flogging, if you are not being completely honest in your post.

I run this combo and fell off my bike the other week on wet roots. I broke my brake lever because of this. I blame my lack of boost forks and front wheel completely. If I had matched boost front end to the rear end of my bike I would of been able to manual over.

I even just upgraded my fork to another non boost variety.

My first XT 11 speed shifter came with the crappy window installed with no blanking plate, the warranty replacement came with a blanking plate in the box. it appears that Shimano now provide them with a black plate.

I’m sorry if this sounds harsh. But the buyer has handled and purchased stolen goods. It’s the risk you take when buying used, he hoped to make a couple of quid or sell the remainder of the parts and keep the bits he wanted and end up in a cost neutral position. Then realised via a quick google that actually what he had bought was hot property. If it were me I would pass the details on to the police, alternatively offer him a £100 ‘reward’ to help reduce some of his loss. It sounds harsh, but he is in no position to negiotiate. Guess the email was a ‘consciousness clearer’ or perhaps a hope that you would reply ‘it’s ok you keep it’ so it could be sold on ‘clean’

No one wins in these situations other than the initial thief. The fact someone who obviously knows the MTb world so well, took a pretty poor gamble merely adds fuel to bike theifs fires

Hope have stopped producing 170/177 hubs???? Still listed as current on their pro4 section of their website. The 170 hub shell is the same as the 177, which is still current for many 4″ fattys such as:
    Salsa bsargrease
    Mukluk
    Surely Wednesday
    Smokestone Henderson
    On one trail

Plus more, the truth is 197 isn’t needed for 4″ fat bikes and the fact that some fattys with 177 and 100bb fat bikes can run upto the minion sized fatty rubber on br710’s, I’m still not sure why anyone would want a wider rear end. I can’t see the benefit (personally). As I see it now their are two fat bike standard which are hear to stay 177 for 4.0 and 197 for 5.0. I can’t see either disappearing soon

Thing is the arch mk3 is only 40g per rim lighter, I’m sure it’s a better rim, but don’t make the swap for weight. Not sure what spokes the current rim is built on maybe some weight saving there. Op what is the weight of your complete wheeelset ?

Does lester still sail an Int Canoe ? He was a member of my sailing club, painted the thing Orange for some strange reason

He sails at Ullswater sc in a 49er and has done for a few years I believe, previously with his brother now another chap. Very, very quick in a boat as well. He owns an IC which he has leant to my friend to use for a year.

How did I only just see this?? If anyone has a set of Fuel exs in the 27.5 variety that they ‘accidentally/greedily/impulse’ bought and now want to sell on, please let me know!

I ordered some but cancelled my order a couple of days ago, so maybe get in contact with them as they will have another pair

If they are selling on eBay with a dropper for £1200, then you have listed pretty much eBay prices on an open free classified page. Many people will pay more on eBay as they have protection and can pay via PayPal, which means credit card etc.

I find if you are listing outside of eBay you need to take off the fees. So if you had a bike listed for a grand on eBay it’s 10-15% cheaper than there. So £850 would be classified price. Plus you don’t have the reverb
