V666ern – thanks, would probably want a new one. Bit funny about warranties after some of the cracking issues they have had on the last generation

TBF, you’d have to be completely stupid to build an uplift venue that needs or even works best on a dh bike these days, it just means slashing your market.

That’s kind of my point, I certainly would not visit the place as often as I do if it was a DH centre. But I have to admit that the majority of the time I go to BPW i pedal up. I find it so much more rewarding riding there pedalling up.

The race is tonight it’s the twighlight enduro. To be honest bud I wouldn’t bother with the stuff around the trail centre, unless you are there just for an uplift. It’s not much use unless you are local (ish) butbest to head over with someone that knows the place. Or get a group of you and pay for a ride with a guide.

Agreed, I can’t think of many places at BPW where you would need a DH bike. But then I guess that’s true for FOD.

Thing is I see BPW as a lift assisted bike park where 90% of the trails are for trail bikes. Don’t get me wrong I like BPW, especially when it’s wet as the trails are weatherproof.

I’m pretty sure I could show you some trails that would make you think it’s the best place you have ridden in a while. But even then it would never be bike park Wales. Nor would I ever want it to be. FOD is a massive place which extends well beyond PABA and cannop

Joe, what were you expecting if you were doing an uplift in a forest mate? There is some of the best riding to be had in the fOD you just need to know where to look. I will be there tomorrow (on an orange funnily enough) with a knackered rock razor off piste! It’s not better than BPW but completely different.

Been close to buying one of the new spitfires myself. I loved my v2 spitty and regret selling it. I currently have the latest 2017 Five. Which is great but can’t get away from wanting another Spitfire. I enquired about a new one the other day but it came with a monarch and that was it! If I wanted shock less I was offered whatever they could get from eBay off. So it made the decision not to buy pretty easy.

No doubt I will order one still….

For me the nice thing about mountain biking is the sheer variety and choice there is in the market to suit most people’s budget. I think it’s great that their are aspirational brands. It’s also important for folks to understand that there are different perceptions of value. What I see as good value is different from the next person. Do I think the price of a new pair of 36’s is ridiculous…yes. Would I buy another set…absolutely.
But then I wouldn’t touch one of those high end Yeti frames, as I just couldn’t bring myself to shell out that much cash on a brand which has currently quite questionable issues over build quality.

Thats interesting. My friends that have done it said its brutal on tyres and to go for something substantial. Super Gravity RR is on the list. I always found Spesh Control sidewalls quite thin so glad that its worked for you.

Get yourself a sunrace 11-46t cassette and 32t chainring. I am yet to run out of range. Perhaps run out of puff on Fire road descents but then who cares about that. I avoid wasting altitude on fireroads wherever possible!

Not sure on the 520 mate to be fair, I am happy to show you some off piste stuff next time you are over in the forest. Emails in my profile

If you have a garmin with you, you could download some GPX files from Strava. The Red and blue are pretty boring especially on such a big bike. Much better if you can get to some of the off piste stuff. Blue descent is pretty good fun, but not really worth the rest of the trail.. That said its my local so I have perhaps flogged the marked trails to boredom over the years. If i wanted a quick fix without the hassle of getting lost I would do as others have said and pedal up the push up and smash some downhill runs in.

I have a 2017 Five, wouldn’t want or need anymore bike to be honest. That said I am hankering after another Spitfire or maybe a bronson. Don’t get me wrong the Five is a great bike and the 2017 is a much better take on the previous models, just think it’s perhaps time to look something different

FOD is my local, I ride with a Mary all year round alternate between a Dampf in the winter and razor when it starts to get even remotely dry. Mary is all the tyre you will ever need for the front at FOD, grips roots as well as anything and clears the slip well. Rear tyres tend to be your own preference. My friends all run different rear tyres.

That looks a load better than it does in Banshees own photographs!!!! Damn, you have made me enquire about a frame now. Im liking my Orange Five but its still nothing like as good a ride as my old spitty! Interesting to see what the price comes in at without a monarch…Watching this build with interest.

I have a brand x and have been really pleased however my collar came undone (no idea how) so I decided to unscrew and clean out before re-tightening. Once unscrewed it looks like the post has some issues with the stanchion movement which has caused all the anodising to run off. It’s still working and under warranty so once it packs up I will send it back. But completely fed up with droppers now. I have a brand new boxed reverb I can’t sell and look set to lose a fortune on after my LBS and SRAM wouldn’t refund me.

For me (i understand i have an interest here as he second in the queue) if i reply to their email straight way saying something is still available and send my paypal details, then i would expect an immediate payment or an email saying when they are going to pay. I would chase after a few hours and if nothing i would offer to the next person. Then tell the original contact by email that they had missed out. For me its a pain in the arse to sell something as you have to make time to get to the post office. So i like things sold and gone ASAP.

I saw an ebike wheelspin today at BPW…unbelievably it was such a big wheel spin that it stopped the earth rotating slightly and made the day last at least 5 minutes longer… it got me thinking. Is it really increased carbon emissions that increase global warming ? Or is it the increase of ebikes and their wheel-spinning ways

I broke one in the same way, but it was about a month old SRAM warrantied it, which is goood when you see how much they are. Looks like BETD are making aftermarket axles so will replace with one of those and finally remove the one remaining sRAM item on my bike!

I found they helped with my hand and grip troubles. I had several ganglions which which get irritated on long rides they could cause me to lose grip which was less than ideal. I have to say the issues are much improved since i moved to the Ergons about 8 months ago. Sure it could be coincidence, but im happy to put it down to the grips

As above, I really rate them. I prefer the slim version also despite having big hands!

But it looks like you are selling your Suntours?

FWIW anyway i agree they are bloody expensive, It wouldn’t be so bad but in SRAM’s case they have QC issues. Creaky crowns, no oil or low oil levels. Then you look at some of their other RS equipment. Reverbs big price hike with the launch of the B1 promising to of sorted legacy issues….only for it to be worse! Monarchs failing left right and centre. I dont mind paying for the privilege of the latest kit! But I expect it to have some kind of QC process.

So I was just talking to my riding buddies about this Sunday. My winter hardtail is currently dropper-less whilst I await delivery. I ride off piste in the FOD most rides, it’s amazing how much I miss one. In fact I would say I’m bloody dangerous or if not bloody slow without one. All my riding friends run them, so they have to wait for me to raise my saddle (they don’t wait anymore) with the tight, dodging round trees descents or short very steep drops it’s pretty dicey for someone of my poor skill level. So for me, I won’t buy a bike without one again!

Summer use only for me, when it is in fact excellent. In the winter I stick with wet lube now.

Slightly more? Quick add up says £1400 for all the parts £400 more….sorry Renton that’s very unfortunate.

Off up the forest this afternoon. I rode Staunton on Sunday and it was lethal! Still great fun. Dowies and Shutcastle will be muddy but ride-able. Bluebells will be a bog. Murdocks drop in slope was a bit of a mess and recipe for disaster when i rode there recently.

Definitely worth heading over there though if you dont mind a bit of sloppy fun. We ride from PABA to get some distance in.

I have a HT for decent pedaling duties, I now have a 160mm FS for comfortable trail riding and a DH bike for uplift days…..variety is the spice of life, I may get a short travel 29er as my next bike, shame Orange stopped making that 110mm rear travel machine really.

Ummm, they still make it…it’s called the segment

I know mate. Personally if the chap is genuine, then I would split it. Alternatively I would pay for the postage back on the proviso that when hope warranty them he sells them back to me at the agreed price.

To be honest, if it was a “proper” STW poster and not just a classified user I would split the cost of the postage back. I’m sure he didn’t go out of his/her way to purposely sell you a dodgy set of wheels. But maybe i am a soft touch.

Hope won’t warrant it unless you are original owner. So he would need to warrant. I would want full refund

I weighed my 2017 Orange Five frame when I pulled it out of the box then completely forgot the weight. It was surprisingly light if I remember about 300g lighter than my previous Five which was the last model. Full build is 28.something lbs, with 36’s, Mary and Dampf, renthal carbon bars, reverb, float Dps shock, SixC cranks, Full XT m8000, DT Swiss Xm1501 wheels oh and that’s with gamut podium flats fitted

    russyh

    I love this thread.

28lbs seems a pretty standard weight for that type of bike without a dropper, which would likely add another lb or lb and a half to the weight.

I spent a fortune pissing in the wind trying to make my new Orange five lighter. Its 28lbs (and bit) with a Dropper. But that’s Carbon bars, 1550g wheelset, carbon cranks etc, 1×11, ti railed saddle. Its fitted with some proper tyres and 36’s. Its cost me allot of money to get it where I want it, in hindsight a bit of a waste
