What date you riding FOd drP? I may be able to show you around some stuff
russyhFree MemberWell I got to say, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Small bump sensitivy massively improved over standard pikes, seems like more mid travel support and a nice ramp up even without tokens. Well chuffed, looking forward to playing with tokens and air pressure now to see how good I can make them
russyhFree MemberAll fitted, removing the old piston was a ball ache even with the golf grip clamp. In the end careful wrapping with an inner tube and a hair dryer sorted it. First ride tomorrow, removed all tokens and kept same PSI to set a base setting to work from
russyhFree MemberGiven that most of us ride on bikes far more cabale than we are, does the average rider really notice the difference in rebound and compression settings, or benefit from the quality of shock.
Yes!!!!
russyhFree MemberDrP I would be happy to show you some of the stuff, unfortunately I am racing the Fod enduro on the 15th so won’t be riding on the 14th. Maybe some other time though.
I would recommend a guided ride if you want the most out of a day at Fod (I’m not a guide by the way) it’s good value and you will get a proper good days riding in
russyhFree MemberYou have not ridden the right off piste stuff then at FOD! I have ridden all round the country and I’m lucky to Live so close to FOD, it’s an endless pot of trail gold. Just need to know where to look.
russyhFree MemberWe have all sacked it off. Weather has been woeful, one lad has a broken wrist and i’m in Scotland all week with work
russyhFree MemberPretty sure my Jeffsy was about (forum scales) 28lbsish…With Sixc cranks beign the only mod… After the 2nd ride i change to tyres that were heavier as i could not get on with the Onza.
I absolutely love the bike, I have raised the fork travel to 150mm and fit offset bushes. I am likely to remove the offset bushes shortly, Just ordered a Luftkappe and after my house move im ordering a coil shock.
The only bike i have enjoyed riding anywhere near as much was my old Spitfire. But out of the box the Jeffsy is superb and i’m hoping with my next round of mods its goign to be even better.
russyhFree MemberFinally got around to ordering the Luftkappe. Now scratching my head around Locktite, nailvarnish or other thread lock. Is the blue stick 248 OK to use? i can nip in to Halfords and grab that easy enough
russyhFree MemberGot a link as to where you bought the bearings? Mine had seized solid. I popped the seals and span them
Up in the drill last night and that has helped but I’m going to replace them. Just fell of the chair when I saw the SRAM pricerussyhFree MemberOctane-One Prone looks good and is very well priced. They’re <£200 on CRC. The geometry is on par with the above.
I habe one of the 29er versions it’s a good frame for the money, only complaint is the paint finish is woeful, mines the candy red which looks great in the sun at a distance, but looks like a £200 frame paint job up close. In terms of ride it’s pretty damn good to be honest
russyhFree Memberbut I don’t see hardly any of them doing the red trails..
Perhaps they are too busy smashing the proper trails instead of the man made ‘red graded’ cycle paths the litter UK trail centres… one thing I will say is the two chaps I ride with who own Enve’ d up Cruz’ s one drives an Audi one a Vw Van both of which are proper quick riders! Both of which would hit bigger stuff than most of the people riding red trails asking where all the SC riders are!
Obviously the comment was toungue in cheek, but it does reek of jealousy. If by in large riders of the ‘superbike’ variety just spend all day riding blue trails, who cares? As long as they come back happy who’s business is it to any body? Personally I just like seeing people riding bikes and smiling. Be it a Halfords special or a carbon fandango. Snobbery or reverse snobbery is a pretty poor personality trait
russyhFree MemberAlpine has issues with swing arm and main frame by pivot, as so the early fours it would appear. Also frame sbeing sent out new 5mm out of line and coined as being within tolerance. Absolute shower…it’s all over the facebook page but gets removed by the admin. So much so a specific Orange owners with fracked frames group was set up.
I understand things go wrong, it’s the nature of the beast. It’s how things are handled that’s important and Orange have not shrouded themselves in glory here. Maybe they are overwhelmed, who knows? But for me a great British company pricing the way they have recently and offering a not great after sales service is a real shame.
Maybe my own experience was isolated (I know it wasn’t) I also understand that those whom have been let down are the vocal minority. I just hope they get their shit together and fast, as a world without Orange MTb would be a much poorer place
russyhFree MemberBecause they have business models that rely on cheaper labour for manufacture and direct sales to cut out dealer margins. Was anyone doing direct sales twenty years ago?
But we have already established that the frames are by and large the same price as Orange therefor the ‘cheap’ labour is somewhat of a moot point. If anything it suggests that Orange are ‘cheap’ for a frame only purchase. All of my new oranges have been frame only purchases, the build spec of their complete bikes is always too much of a compromise for what I perceive as value.
Worth noting you can also buy an Orange direct. Dealer margins (I’m reliably told) are very small compared to other manufacturers.
I have always been a massive fan of Orange and the whole ethos, hell I even forgave their pricing given the supposed support. But for me when it went wrong the back up was poor, really poor something that historically was always hailed as being ‘one of the best’. This has changed since the buy out, also coincided with further price hikes and more QC issues.
russyhFree MemberSo how do Bird, airstrip etc all do it? Are they buying inferior components? I’m afraid from where I stand they have increased over and above. Especially when you consider the value offered by other males.
That said let’s not get away from the fact their antiquated construction methods limits the amount of frames they actually can produce so they will work off the logic of complete bikes being at a price the market can stomach vs their supply.
I do however understand it’s easy to jump on the ‘overpriced filing cabinet!’ Bandwagon but it’s very difficult to justify the pricing of some of their taiwan imported hardtails
russyhFree MemberThat’s because of a change in duty though isn’t it…it’s as accurate example as you are going to find especially with orange still constructing bikes now as they did in 2002….
russyhFree MemberAgreed that is unfair! I was just talking to my mate about the price of the new scott genius which also appears to be some kind of sick joke. The cost of Orange frames is inline with many other manufacturers, but their complete bike prices are almost greedy. How can you justify the pricing for the latest p7? It’s ridiculous, as said before I am a very recently reformed orange fan boi…hell I even have the hoody and about 10 T-shirts. But frankly I would never buy another UK built orange unless the price reflected the quality and the actual real life support. For me they fell woefully short of the mark and despite what the other fanboys say, they couldn’t give a shit. In fact the build quality issues, pricing and service levels seem to of gone down the toilet since the ownership change…obviously this is my opinion and experiences
russyhFree MemberJoystick on helmet for me with a one23 bar mounted light, use all through the winter regardless of conditions it’s been pretty damned good combination

I try not to do “how much?” posts, but £3.3k for a 525 steel HT is hilarious.Agreed, Stanton got a bit of grief over their price rises a while back, but they look much better value than the p7….it’s a bit of a piss take
russyhFree MemberAccording to the BOE inflation calculator £2500 in 2002 is worth £3700 in 2016…
russyhFree MemberI have the weight of the 2017 5 frame written down at home but I’m currently out of the country will try and remember to post it when back, surprisingly it’s not as heavy as everyone would want you to believe
russyhFree MemberAs a long time former Orange fan, I wonder if the latest price hikes will be utilise to fund their ever increasing warranty claim department? Or perhaps adding support to their stretched customer services team? Maybe even find a new hammer to smack frames straight…sorry I would never buy another and that’s only partly to do with the price
russyhFree MemberIf you contact YT they will send you the front mech mount plate for whicha oneup chain guide fits I think. Check out the pinkbike Jeffsy thread for more details

there’s plenty of go-pro footage on youtube to get a feel for the terrain. Usually muddy? – well, it’s the UK so anything is possible… :/Experience tells me that talking with people who have done an event before is much more important than making assumptions from a YouTube clip! Hence the question. Fitted some hefty tyres for ard rock off advice rather than YouTube. Glad I did as I didn’t puncture whilst loss around me did.
russyhFree MemberThose that have ridden it before any tips please? What is the terrain like? presuming different to that of Ard Rock? is it usually muddy? probably need another what tyre thread! ha
russyhFree MemberNot buying any Shimano brakes until they revert back to being super reliable again. I had loads of issues with my M8000’s wanderng bite points and the leaky piston issue.
As an absolute shimano fanboi and SRAM hater. I am currently loving my Guide RSC’s….. 😕
russyhFree MemberLike the sound/look of the sentinel, put off by the need for a replacement fork etc.
russyhFree MemberI have all from issue 8, plan to wallpaper all the fronts on the workshop wall with them, another job on ‘the list’……
I’m doing exactly the same when I finally move into my new house!
russyhFree MemberBuild a bike and loan it to him. On the provision he can’t sell it or give it away without your say so and if it gets nicked he owes you £300. Still yours if and when he gets bored of it.
Personally I would look after my brother as best I possibly could even if it wasn’t reciprocated. But that’s just me
russyhFree MemberI’m going, not sure what to expect really as it’s less well reported/talked bout than its bigger brother. Any tips out there?
russyhFree MemberThey are great, we stop there every weekend now as a half way point for our rides. Awesome coffee and milkshakes oh and cake is great too. The shop is actually pretty damn good as well and well stocked!
russyhFree MemberI did not like Putoline at all. Messy, more of a faff to apply. Just wasn’t for me. Understand people rave about it. Each to everyone’s own
russyhFree MemberSquirt for Summer, wet lube for winter.
I really rate squirt as a summer lube, everything remains nice and clean. Easy to apply. Its pretty hopeless in the winter here in the FOD mind.
russyhFree MemberMy Current YT Jeffsy is getting to be. But for me the best bike I have ever owned is my old Banshee Spitfire! By best I mean the most confidence inspiring, enjoyable ride! Loved it!
russyhFree MemberThey have fixed the thirstmasters I have not ejected a. Title from mine in 3 months of ownership including ard rock, BPW and other enduro races
russyhFree MemberIs it a different line though? I thought it was just the right drop to the road was easier than the left? However the left had a better entry in so arguably easier? Can’t say I ever noticed 2 distinct lines that would benefit anyone particularly certainly not strava?
It’s a great trail either way and the second part after the fire road changes every time I ride down it…I say ride more like ass twitch down it
