“looks at means of high level access & weeps when I think how many emails it took to satisfy main contractor that mewp hire company we were using had all the correct certs”

No problems like that, no-one has died yet so all is good!

“What’s the driveway, and how much?”

Its pea gravel on a plastic grid system, had to be permable to keep building control happy, got it off ebay, worked out at £8 per metre for the grid plus stone for a base and gravel to cover (gravel about £34 per dumpy bag)

Probably a bit less than £150k, not including land, Ive done alot of the work myself so have saved a fair bit on labour.

[Hmm. Not sure I’ll ply line. Am going to build a garage full of ply cabinets.

If I do it, I’ll get a lift. Can always sell on eBay afterwards.

Photos of your house build please!]

It will be when it’s finished! There’s light at the end of the tunnel tho.
As mentioned I ply lined the ceiling (shuttering ply) so I can fix hooks etc wherever I need. Also makes the boarding a bit easier as your not looking for joists to hit.
It do-able by hand. 2 men and some T bars made of 3×2 cut to the right height to wedge in.
I’ve gone through about 250 8×4 boards so I’m getting pretty handy at it.

You can double board with normal plaster board (12.5mm) or use specific fire boards but they’re bloody heavy. (37kg) I’ve just done my garage on a self build. I bought a board lifter as I had the whole house to do.
I ply lined mine to make fixing things to the ceiling easier. Fill with insulation if there is a room above.
Scrim the joints and plaster or tape and fill. Seal the edges etc.

Ive fitted 4 of these in my bathroom (200mm sq ones) and there are very good. I’m fitting the round ones in my kitchen/extension.
Very bright and they aren’t spotty like normal spot lights.

What sort of worktop height are you looking for?
If you raise the unit and fit larger plinths, your standard size end panels (if you need them) aren’t going to fit as they’re usually 900mm max, so you’d need tower panels cut down.
Normal height is 150+720+ worktop, but there is slight variations with suppliers.
You can just lift the worktop up and fit a filler out of pelmet or panel, but if you’ve got tower units that dictate the wall unit height, you’ll loose the space I between the wall unit and worktop.

Regardless of what you buy they are all limited on the power output.
I’ve tried a few whilst snowboarding.
Motorola were generally the best as were some doro cheapies from currys.
They are all line of sight, I’ve had ranges from 5km and working fine to 200mtrs and nothing.
Imo there not a substitute for a mobile but quite handy for local chat.

    multimaster”
AKA the dremel of this decade…..

I’ve had one for 2 decades! I fit kitchens and it’s a must. Yes blades are expensive (copies are reasonable) but it will always cut that little awkward bit off without damaging the surroundings. Doubles as a scraper/detail sander, Great for undercutting for flooring, the list goes on..……….

    Fien multimaster.
    Corded sds.
    Corded drill.
    Cordless drill/impact.
Sander. (I prefer random orbital ones)
Mitre saw (the best your money can stretch to)
Selection of hand tools, buy decent stuff as it just works better.
A Skelton gun from a pvc supply co. They just work better as well.

I’m close to finishing a self build.
Went for system boiler, tank with a solar option (will be added later) under floor heating with rads upstairs.
All controlled by a honywell evohome system.
The evohome is pricy but very good.

I supply and fit kitchens. I wouldn’t take an order without a 50% deposit.
Imagine customer picks a kitchen, I order it, they see something else they like and change their mind. I’m stuck with a kitchen that needs paid for.
Try going to B&Q etc. Payment in full when you order.
Labour only, I’d expect payment at the end or in stages if it was a large job.

Battens and brackets are good but you’ll need support along the front edge.
Either a base panel or silver poles/breakfast bar legs, or just some timer if it’s in a garage?

I’ve a bostich 1st and 2 fix. No complaints for the price.
My pal has recently bought a dewalt 1st fix (battery, no gas) and he reckons it’s good.

There is a squad we go out with (usually about xmas time). The meal is always paid for in advance but t they always shout for a kitty for drinks.
It used to start at £30 per couple. So prob £150 at a time. 6 of them drink wine/champagne/proseco like it goes out of fashion! 4 of us are bottled beer drinkers. We’d be lucky to get 2 drinks each and the kitty tin would need filled up to pay for another round of “fizz”
    Sharp kicked that into touch!
Was on holiday a few years ago, with sis/brother in law and 2 kids, my dad and me/wife and 1 baby. First meal, BIL says are we splitting this 3 ways, dad had had a €6 burger and the bill was €90. He’s one of the wine drinkers!

Got a sister in law thats a nutjob, will start an argument with anyone, lives a misreable life, mainly because of her own outlook, drained the parents in law of cash to the point I had to get a mortgage for them to get a house, then got accused off ripping them off?
Alcohol makes her 10 times worse.
I’d bury her in the back garden if it was up to me but the wife wont let me.

Yeah sorry that wasn’t the right size.
An other option is a pvc saw, but the cutter is so quick and clean, you pop it over the pipe and turn in the direction of the arrow and it done.

You can’t get in my local tip after 5 for vans. They all have a folded £10 near the drivers window just as they are passing the fella that asks what’s in the back. Recon something fishy is going on.

I worked in a fab shob years ago and done lots of stainless work, they used to charge £11 per inch of standard single pass tig welding, that was in the early 90’s tho.

Square a line down one side of the timber and nail one side of the hanger to it.
Drop in second bit of timber. Push the joist hanger over and hit the little toggle thing to hold it in place.
    Nail all holes.

I can clear 2 mats in a diving forward roll. About 3 metres. Helped by judo as a kid and karate as as adult. It’s funny watching people try and fail to do a basic roll. Usually goes head…. pause….. thump!

Agree with dovebiker about the lead.
I’ve a 14 year old patterdale, from being allowed out, he was taken by car to some where quiet and I’d put him down and just walk, he’d follow with very little coaxing. He was prob 6 months before I put a lead on him.
I could (his eyes and hearing aren’t as good) walk for miles in the dark and he’d follow wherever I went.
Only time he’s on a lead is near a road or around other dogs as he’s a angry little thing with other dogs.

I’ve tried spd’s on a mountain bike once. It was the worst ride ever.
I’ve rode flats on bikes since I learned to ride, spent my childhood on a bmx and was at a pretty good level (freestyle)
It just felt unnatural to be clipped in.
I do have them on my road/cx bike but I still don’t like them on that.

Better off using joist hangers and twisted nails. Both available from screwfix.

So where is it in there Russ?

It’s the both will blindly argue their point bit.

C’mon Russ put us out of our misery, we are on tenterhooks now…..

Tbh I’ve better things to do than get into a internet argument.

But to label stupid people racist is pretty shocking and by saying “most likely” doesn’t make it any better.
I generally find that racists are racists and stupid people are stupid.
I’m just a bit uneasy about labelling a planet full of unintelligent people racists because there a bit thick?
On that note I’m out, out of this thread and out on the 23rd.

I did not say all out voters were racist and stupid i said stupid folk are more likely to be racist and racist folk are more likely to vote leave
Which part of this do you think is untrue?

All of it. My wife is pretty stupid but not racist. My mam is pretty intelligent but IMO is racist. My daughter is a predicted
9 a* student and she would vote out if she was old enough, she’s also not a racist and obviously not stupid.
Stupidity and racism arnt a prerequisite to voting to leave.

[No it shows that stupid folk vote are more likely to be racist and racist folk are more likely to vote leave]
    Really?
I’ve never posted anything thing on this thread as its a discussion that will always have the for and against and both will blindly argue their point.
I’m 100% out and I’m not stupid or racist.

    Oh the mighty freestyler.
I had one in 1984/5 ish, skyway wheels, laser lite bars…..
Sold it complete for 40 quid to someone I still ride with, he still gets grief of me.
I bought a frame a few years ago that was in reasonable nick and it lay for a year or 2 and I eventualy threw it out.

If it’s on flatish ground I’d build a frame up out of 6×2. Stand it where you want it to go.
Put a concrete building block in each corner (internally).
Lift it until it’s level and screw a bit 4×2 to the frame so it’s sitting on the block. Pop a few coach bolts through.
Ply on top and it’s done.
I’ve a 20×8 shed in the garden that’s never budged.

Not quite said but done. There is a local ski hill with a lift that runs a few times in the winter. You can hire skis from a outdoor centre a few miles away.
After returning the gear that was rented, my BIL needed a wee. We were sitting in the car 20ft away from the front of the centre and there was about 25 or more people queuing to return their gear.
Just have one on the back wheel of the car, no one can see. I said.
So knob in hand, full flow, I drove off leaving him facing the startled crowd.

I’ve a sister in law that apart from not being an alcoholic sounds very similar.
Very difficult person to be around, lying, sarcastic, jealous, threatening, very narcissistic, multiplied ten fold when alcohol plays its part.
She could start an row/fight in an empty room but it’s never ever her fault, will feel no remorse afterwards and will manipulate the story to her advantage afterwards.
My advice is to keep them at arms length, they will always try and drag whoever is around them to their level and then blame them for the outcome.

You’ll have live/neutral then a three core to the next smoke, which will be live/neutral/link. I’d have a look in the next smoke to see what they’ve used as the live/neutral/link.

I supply and fit kitchens. The biggest kitchen I’ve probably done lately was a u shape 3/6/3 metres and a huge island 2.4 X 1.6. Total cost of the cabinets only (with fitting) was just over 6k. Worktops were another 6k (corian) and all the apliances were Miele (tall fridge/tall freezer/2 ovens/dw/induction hob/extractor) prob close to £20k by the time it was all totted up. But it was a huge room. The same house has just sold for £650k (new build just outside of Carlisle)
