I think you should start worrying more about how to actually remove the tyre, fix a puncture and put it all back together if the pinch bolts are giving you problems 🙂

you'll find a lot on the transition forum on mtbr, I like them a lot too.

I said there will be force to lift the bike against gravity, and yes, this will be greater for heavier wheels due to their mass, however, the extra rotational inertia of the wheels does not affect the force needed to lift them. If it did, a spinning wheel (or anything else) would have to be heavier than a non spinning thing, which is not the case.

This would be fine if you were just trying to lift the bike over a fence but your trying to propel it forward as well as up by making the wheels go round in circles.

how can speed be constant uphill without applying force anyway, if its harder to accelerate heavy wheels it should also be harder to keep them at speed when gravity wants to slow them down.

crikey, the thing is all other things being equal, you will be somewhat faster with lighter wheels, if you get muddy with both light wheels and heavy wheels, the light wheels with mud are still lighter than the heavy wheels with mud. Really the same would apply for any component, lighter = faster (uphill at least).

I'm am particularly bad with maths/physics type stuff but I kind of understood it along the lines that a heavier rotating mass holds more kinetic energy and decelerates less readily, so it kind of balances out – I could be utterly wrong though!

I would agree with that going downhill or even on the flat, but when climbing I think heavier wheels will decelerate quicker than light wheels and therefore require more effort to keep the wheels moving.

One suggestion was that when climbing at a constant speed (not accelerating) it's dead weight that matters, not rotating weight (as you're not accelerating)

    correct

I'm not sure that is correct, the problem with climbing would be that gravity wants to make the wheels go in the reverse direction, therefore it requires effort to keep them moving at a constant speed. Therefore the effort need to move the rotating parts is still a factor.

Compare with riding on the flat and you don't really have gravity trying to take you in the opposite direction

Super Human skills by Sam Hill, seriously! I loved the shore seggy but he was only in half of it and it wasn't exactly super human.

If I was to buy one of these it would be the go pro with chest mount, it gives a far better perspective of the rider, bike and trail.

lots under 100 but you really need to try them on although i guess you can always return it. If it feels a bit tight then thats about the right fit, if you can't get your head in its too small 🙂

There is the N8 coming out which is supposed to use their updated operating system and will have a capacitive screen, good camera dn all the other usual stuff. Gonna be pricey i'd imagine, which was the good thing about the 5800, its cheap and does most things pretty well.

I'm still using the same cable, cable outer, rear mech and shifter that came on my 2006 enduro, so four years later it still works perfectly, no cleaning, lubing or anything. I'm tempted to take it apart now just to see if there is any gunk or rust or anything up there, but it just keeps on working.

stupid question but are those the proper 29er forks? the gap between tire and crown looks less than the travel.

when your in squamish take a hike up the back of the chief, its a bit touristy, ie. lots of hikers but worth it. The hike to garibaldi lake between squamish and whistler is also pretty good.

Wildplay also have a location in whistler with ziplines, very big ziplines, I've done that twice and its awesome.

I still think i'd want to fit in the icefields parkway, if your not going to be back in canada for a while it really is worth the drive out there. I did it from vancouver and back in a long weekend, think 8 hours driving each day but it was totally worth it. I'd rather do that than spend much time in kelowna. its nice there but doesn't have anything on the rockies.

I won't ride anything without interrupted cables, it just seems stupid to have it full length.

smart arse! A full length cable will keep things clean and require zero maintenance, also means less faffing about with little bits of outer, i don't see any benefit to having interrupted cable outers, oh you might save a few grams if your into that i suppose.

You pass thorough Hope to buy cheap fuel but there's no reason to stay there (though there is supposedly good hiking off Highway 5).

Don't forget that they filmed Rambo there, theres even one of those things with a cut-out where the head should be so that you can be rambo and there are the othello tunnels which are nearby, some bits of rambo were also filmed down there 🙂

Not worth a night there, but a stop for a few hours maybe.

I did the glacier trip it wasn't really that great, bussed up, got to stand on it for 20 minutes then bussed back down, the bus was probably more impressive than the experience of being on a glacier. I would have preferred to hike up to the face and check it out from there.

I would spend one week around vancouver/van island, one week out in the okanagan region then another week out in the rockies, thats only about 5 hours driving to get to each main area and gives you a week to explore.

On the island, maybe a day or two in tofino then down to vicotria, spend one day in whistler, a day or two in vancouver, out to wherever you feel like visiting around the okanagan then onto banff. We stayed at the emerald lake lodge about half an hour before you hit the start of the icefield parkway, I would thoroughly recommend that place for stop before travelling up the icefield parkway to jasper, then do the icefield parkway in the other direction back down to banff, it'll take a day each, you will be amazed by the rockies.

Wasn't it Maggie Snatcher who sold off forestry land (and access) to private owners in the 80's?

Can you imagine losing our trail centres to reduce public spending…..

Could be good… think lots of mini whistlers all over the uk.
