Thanks for the replies everyone. During high profile transportation projects, you often hear comments such as nobody will get out of their car. We were debating at work how many people are actually die hard drivers and how many would be willing to switch if they had the option, even a day or two. So say you wanted to reduce vehicles along a corridor by 10%, could those die hards keep driving and say so many of the others shift. That’s where I was going with this.

Don’t get too caught up in the current practicality. Imagine there was a bus or a bike path, would you rather use them or do you like driving that much?

I have a trek powerfly hardtail, it’s a great commuter but a terrible mountain bike, the back end just thuds through everything, it does the opposite of making trails come alive, it literally feels like they’re dead. Maybe i’m too used to my full suss but I’ve had various hard tails in the past. The weight just seems to remove all liveliness. I’ve only had it a few weeks, did a comparison of my commute if anyone’s interested. https://www.transportation-planning.com/blog/a-tale-of-two-bicycles

Almost done watching Parfum, a German series on Netflix, quite a disturbing theme if you’re into that sort of thing.

watching with interest as about to be in the same situation, likely just putting it in a high interest savings account with immediate access and make a few hundred $$$

Not really living beyond our means but by no means saving any money. Trying to reduce the means that we need to live and open up funds for things other than paying for a mortgage on an apartment that’s bigger than we need. Just sold our apartment for a tidy profit, and plan to move into a smaller apartment in a cheaper location. Will still have a mortgage but it’ll be somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 the current one depending on how small we feel we can live.

Watching the Living Mortgage Free thing on Netlfix was a bit of a motivator, while we can’t get rid of the mortgage completely while still living in approximately the same place and keeping the same jobs, we simply have to downsize a little to free up a big chunk of cash, so big benefit without going to the lengths of living on a barge or caravan or something similar.

Spent a week there, mostly just walked or biked around seeing the city, you can ride down to the little fishing village at Dragor, we also biked north up the coast. There are some cool little areas along it the coats , both north and south. Take lots of money, things are crazy expensive. There’s lots of royal places if you’re into that, we just walked around without going in. As you’ll see below my interest was seeing the bike infrastructure. Also you can take the train to Malmo in about 30 minutes.

FWIW, my little write up, but bike focused https://www.transportation-planning.com/blog/euro-trip-2017-part-2-the-grey-bike-lanes-of-copenhagen-denmark

If he’s set on Whistler, check staff housing, don’t know how much, but likely less than the $500/night hotel rates!

I have one outdoor smart plug thing that’s hooked up to outdoor lights, lets me switch them on from the control panel on iPhone or with Siri, and saves fumbling about in the dark trying to plug in the cable. Not planning anything else.

In that first pic, I thought what a weird little basket you have on the back until I realized it was a vent! Is it biopace? that’s the oval one that’s the wrong way isn’t it?

Not sure if that was a good thing having no quali points, just made qualifying a non-event, could have just had another day of practice and sent them down in order of ranking.

Agreed. While this is an uplifting moment, Trump has sowed so much anger at the fictitious ‘deep state’ and the federal government in general among his base in a bid to save his own skin, that we can expect domestic terrorism of the type we saw in Oklahoma City if he finally gets turfed out or resigns.

And again the very people that fear terrorism the most will be the ones doing it, where’s my Alanis album…

I still think (or hope) a small % of the people that voted for him, because they figured lets see what happens, not the hardcore, or those that voted for the minor candidates will switch. I also think there must be enough people out there that weren’t really into politics and didn’t vote the last time that must be disgusted with him and prepared to vote this time. Again, hopefully! Really, if you can vote and don’t this time, there’s something wrong with you.

FFS! its a losing battle when even people on a bike forum don’t understand the difference between riding a bike and driving a car!

I could be wrong here, but aren’t spesh bikes known for short chainstays and low bottom brackets? Could be a bit outdated, maybe you need a 27.5 to get the chainstay shorter. I’d say at 6ft, try a wider bar, like 780, not game changing but will lower you a fraction. And run rebound more open front and back.

I prefer Montreal, but primarily because it reminds me of europe, if you’re just coming on vacation, maybe that’s not what you’re after.

It makes it bearable more than anything for me. I went form a short commute where I biked or took my tupperware like kia about 50% of the time to a longer commute, only 40km/~40mins. After a few years the kia was such a depressing place to be, perfectly functional and reliable, but a swap to a little GTI has made the commute bearable again, I still enjoy getting in that after a couple of years, even though its mostly highway, errr… motorway. I’d still take a bike ride over driving. Driving up through the mountains can be fun though.

Something like this might be useful. I’m not with TD, so not sure how good they are.

You mentioned KPMG earlier, are you working with them? They have an office in Langley, a much shorter commute from Pitt Meadows, I only say that as i’m sitting in the same building as them right now working on a sunday :(

I leased a brand new Ford Escape within a week or two of arriving, that was about 10 years ago now, things might have changed, had a credit check from the uk which may or may not have helped. Used cars are expensive and you have to pay tax on them, even on a private sale, insurance is also eye watering, this is all BC, might be different elsewhere. find out requirements for maintaining your no claims for wherever you are going, I had a letter saying 10+ years, but they wouldn’t honour it on a technicality, the letter needed more detail.

I heard some 2016’s came with little grease in the bearings, 2017 were better, I had one of the first 2017’s and the shop said they checked the bearings and they were fine. Its been fine in the year and a bit i’ve had it. I found it performed great if I was charging hard, but too firm if cruising a little more, removing tokens softened it up a little, made it more plush and comfortable.

If regular taxi companies could get their act together and create a decent app, we could bin uber altogether. We were waiting on a a taxi the other day, told it would be a few minutes, probably waited 15 with no idea if it was actually going to show up. At least with uber we’d know where it was and could watch its progress. Then when it turned up the person getting out, took forever to pay, while we waited at the curb in the rain. With uber you would just get out and leave. Its a great service and technology but horrible company.

I’ve been using the Scosche Rythym+ for a while now in place of a chest strap and found it to work very well, its a light based option but the reviews were good, and my experience is similar.

The only time I use control centre is when I get on a plane and turn on flight mode, so that’s not bothered me. I actually turned the notification privacy off. When the phone is sitting on my desk I like to be able to glance at it and see if it’s worth looking at further. It was annoying having to look more closely to make the notification appear.
