That’s becoming more common breatheeasy, but they have to come out the back of the bus shelter to get on the bus? seems strange.

You’re talking about forced revolution. Good luck with that. And yes, I know the Dutch did it, but that was a long time ago in a different country.

That was in a time when the environment, global overpopulation, the unsustainability of everybody using a car was not such a hot topic, there are more drivers (no pun intended) to building this kind of city now than ever before!

My twitter feed is busy with good cycling stuff today, here’s a cool video of Groningen, it almost seems like some kind of weird cycling utopia…

somebody shared this on twitter a short while ago, Amsterdam street many years ago, it looks like any typical UK street and then after…

edit: not sure its the exact same street, but more of an example of how things were then and now.

Personally I think these Camden examples are pretty good, its a low cost way to trial it and gain support, realise traffic likely won’t get much worse than it already is, and maybe a few years down the line maybe they make it more permanent to avoid the problems outlined above, small steps.

With the parked cars it looks like they included space for the doors to open, maybe not quite enough…

Self inflicted segregation feels like a backwards step when we’ve had the right to ride bicycles on UK roads since long before there were cars to share them with…

Exactly, so why not take a little bit back and give the car less space, think of it as taking a little bit of the road back from cars and segregating the vehicles… many cycle paths are still the road they just have a planter or curb in the middle. It just takes a council with the balls to take away a little capacity for vehicles.

Don’t pander to driver’s greed and impatience.

That’s a bit of an idealistic view that we are pandering to driver greed an impatience by taking cyclists off the road, the alternative of hoping for better driving is unrealistic, riding on the road is dangerous and its putting people off riding their bikes.

I’ve used them too, but only when I feel like it. If I want to train, then I need to be going fast and it’s not fair to do that on a cyclepath. But I don’t want to be thrown to the lions if I do go on the road.

That’s true and a fair point, I would argue that for the greater good, your’re need to train comes below the need to get more people cycling but its an issue for sure. If I wanted to go on such a training ride, I’d probably just pick a route I felt safest on, for the most part I leave any kind of training for the dirt! that’s obviously not an option for everybody though.

If you want some examples of some cycling infrastructure, mostly from the other side of the pond at the moment, i’m slowly adding to this page… http://www.transportation-planning.com/examples.html

On a recent trip down it I encountered a woman with a push chair blocking the path. She didn’t hear my shouts due to the traffic and I had to basically throw the anchor out and stop.

OMG, the horror of having to slow down and add 5 seconds to your strava time!

But point 1 is the most important. What we have now would be fine if people weren’t dicks. There’s no reason why drivers just can’t be nice – if they were, we’d all be safe. To be honest, most of the time, in most places, we are.

and that’s fine for the experienced cyclist, if you want to create a cycling culture you have to build infrastructure that the 8-80 can cycle on too, more people cycling makes it more normal, especially if its kids or people dressed in normal clothes. For what its worth I’ve seen a lot of cool separated bike paths and if you accept that cycling doesn’t have to be at mach 10, its much more pleasant thing to use when you don’t face getting squashed up against the curb by a truck.

The other problem, and it may be because this is a cycling forum, is that dutch commuter cyclists will typically be normal people for want of a better word, in many other places it is often just the dedicated cyclist who commute and expect to be able to go fast. How many of you would enjoy this or be frustrated by it.

Round our way the cycle lanes are purely traffic-calming measures

They start and finish at every opportunity and the lines and coloured tarmac only serve to make the road appear narrower and slow vehicles down

if the road needs to appear narrower then so be it just do it put some crosshatching down whatever. There shouldn’t be any cycle lanes on the road you’re either traffic or you’re not. There are no horse lanes or mobility scooter lanes

Share the road share the rules etc

I’m amazed at this, so something that slows traffic and gives space to cyclists is a bad thing?

There is a growing movement in planning circles to cater for all modes and strive towards the dutch model, maybe its not hit the uk to a great degree, but its happening in NA for sure, where fortunately they designed all their roads way to big to start with, so its often easier to remove a lane or reduce lane widths to something more suitable for an urban environment. The uk is a lot more compact to begin with so it is more difficult and will take some balls to remove parking lanes or travel lanes. The 8-80 movement, complete streets, the concept of induced demand is all gaining traction, it takes time though.

October can be great, like 25 degrees in the bike park, beer on the patio great, top of Whistler may see the occasional dusting but you won’t be doing any skiing, bike park closes early October, ski season starts late November usually so think about that if those things are important to you.

It was up at the same asking price as freshly re-fitted houses on the same estate, so it was just a waste of time I’m keen to avoid repeating…

Basically, you need more money off than the value of the work that needs doing, otherwise you might as well buy a house that’s already sorted…

sounds like you should look at the refurbished houses rather than those that need work

My 2013 11″ base model MB Air runs fine with it, my 2012 base model mac mini less so, it has slowed down a fair bit, spinning wheels and icons bouncing on the bottom of the screen for a while before opening. Overall usability hasn’t really changed, I use it the same way I did before, albeit answering the phone with my laptop is pretty cool and works well.

Somewhat on topic but a little more recent, I watched the Weight of Chains last night about the wars in Yugoslavia, we were supposed to be the good guys, but were far from it, its 2 hours long but well worth it and you may leave a little disillusioned with western governments.

Summary, instigate financial crisis in country, citizens from different regions blame each other and tensions rise, force regions to separate if they want aid, provide them with weapons, privatize their previous public companies taking all the money out of the country, rinse and repeat, several times over. Interesting thoughts about the EU at the end too.

not necessarily segregated lanes, but segregated cycle crossings at difficult junctions.
oh and cycle bypass of junctions. why engineer in all those advance stop lines, when you can make a cycle lane totally bypass the junction with no stop necessary.
pretty sure a civil engineer can earn a few bob from BoJo/TFL for that, and the guy with a vested interest in motorised traffic gains from that too.

Care to tell us how cyclists can bypass a junction without having to stop? If there is turning traffic, they will have to stop at some point. Segregated lanes in Vancouver work well, in my opinion, one thing that makes a difference to the red light jumpers is dedicated bike lights as per image below. London is going in the right direction.

I seem to remember YT’s first review in Dirt coincided with their first two page advert at the front of the mag.

The thing here is, it could be them paying for a review, or maybe when they found out Dirt were going to publish the review, they decided to include the Ad, if you’re trying to sell bikes why wouldn’t you, could work both ways.

I have a very limited experience with many of the popular websites, I released an app some of you may be aware of called Bike Setup, it was my first app, I have no connections to the bike industry, just sent out a bunch of emails to all the main websites asking if they would feature it, surprisingly many of them did for no fee or anything more than an email or two, so front page coverage for a $1 app from a nobody.

Those that did were Singletrack, Dirt, Flow (australia), Bicycle Retailer, Sicklines, AMB (australia), Bike Rumour, and a few more smaller ones, some without even an email that just found it, so they are not all bad and focussed on the $ to provide content. Many others didn’t even respond to my emails or did and then did nothing.

insurance for a 1.6 golf is cheaper than a 1.1 saxo? I would expect to pay more at a dealership, just the way it is, for that money i would look for a private sale.

Vegas for 6 weeks??? Went on a tour that was an hour or two riding about a half hour outside of vegas with escape adventures, the young guide shot off from the start, in a group of four that included me (fairly decent rider), my wife, beginner/intermediate, and two older guys who were pretty new to it, end result was riding too fast to keep up with the guide, my wife fell, almost poked her eye out on some spiky plant, cut up her arm, guy was a dick about it, we finished the ride and he wouldn’t even drop us at the hospital, despite the fact her arm still hadn’t stopped bleeding. So please don’t give them your money. As for the riding, it was the cottonwood valley tour, sandy singletrack, nothing too exciting, but as above if you’re there for 6 weeks, i’d want out for a bit.

They rebult the whole train station – for a couple of thousand visitors.

erm, locals will still be able to use it after the event won’t they, who paid for the upgrades?

Personally, I can’t wait to look at the planets on my watch and send crap little pictures to my friends, that just made the watch look way too geeky, didn’t help having a bill gates lookalike presenting it. I might still get one for the fitness side though.

I made a little app similar to this but arguably more useful as you can use it with anything https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/bike-setup/id794196208?mt=8, it won’t take a picture of your shock and tell you your sag but it does help record settings until you find the ideal setup.

There’s something weird with mavic in canada, they have their own distribution network or something so shipping costs are high if they don’t have stock and need to order one little part, I needed some QR adapters and the shop guy said it would cost too much in shipping just to order them, so i’d be better getting them online.

if you are just mincing along smooth trails you should not be using all the travel, if you are riding reasonably hard on it with a few drops then I would expect you to use most of the travel.
