I’d be delighted to take this if it’s still available.

    It’s probably 12V then.

Check the voltage rating on the old spotlight.

I’d go for the second one as the first one won’t work very well – the bolts will not be flush with the outside edge of the caliper. As you can see on the second adapter (or any other type of adapter other than the first) when you change rotor size the caliper is rotated around the centre of the wheel. Yet on the first adapter the bolts stay aligned with the 6″ post mount.

The only ways to get round it is to use the special CPS washers that come on Avid calipers, but it still don’t work very well.

    This type of thing

These would be an upgrade, though slightly higher than your budget:-

These are a direct replacement for less:-

SIDs sound like a good buy, but can’t be sure without inspection.

They organised a noisy protest where they erected signposts pointing south to Eton

    More full marks!

Liking The Smiths is one thing, turning up at Salford Lads Club is possibly a photo-opportunity too far!

I don’t think you need to be working class to relate to The Smiths – the songs are about feeling alienated to the mainstream (amongst other things) and I’m sure you could feel alienated whilst stuck at boarding school being rammed by one of the prefects.

But full marks to Marr for having a swipe at “Dave”

What doesn’t sit well with “Dave’s” background is the socialist manifesto of Weller and The Jam.

And what shows him up to be as big a fraud as Brown liking The Arctic Monkeys is him saying Eton Rifles is one of his favourite songs. He’s obviously never listened to the lyrics.

johnny marr came up with a handful of great riffs

I think he came up with more than a handful!

And most of them were brilliant!

Think I saw some in T K Max fairly recently.

They definitely have Crumpler stuff in there periodically, bought a couple of Lolly Dollys about a year ago.

Bought a new (to me) car last Jan.

I think you’d probably get a better deal in Nov/Dec as people are focussed on Christmas right now and not buying cars. After Chrimbo people start on their ‘to do’ list like get a new car.

Erm, the plastic is just a cover for the metal core of the outer cable.

It also acts a sheath that the cable can move against, providing relative movement at the mech end.

This is why it needs to be as friction free as possible and hence the need to clean or replace it periodically

    roystonsmith

    Thanks for all the views.

I always used to change cable and outers at the same time but after this brain wave will probably only change cables when it’s really necessary. Saves throwing a perfectly serviceable bit of kit away.

LBS’s always change both together because it eliminates an unknown factor for them and also increases their profit (they’re selling you more stuff)

    Right, back now.

Damn, beaten to it while I was down the pub. I was going to suggest the bleed kit pdw has already mentioned and the other link shows the type of thing you have to do to the adapters to reshape them.

There are also these bleed kits you may be interested in. There are also some instructions here.

    Right then….

First of all, some of the following has been gleaned from previous threads, both here and elsewhere, so credit to you if you recognise something you’ve posted previously.

I’ve got a set of Magura Louises and this adapter fits the calliper (even though it says rim brakes). It’s M6 thread so you can check if it would fit yours. For the lever it’s just a friction fit of the syringe end.

For Avid you need something like this (M5 thread A344-4.5-M5 or A345-4.5-M5). The threaded bit is actually a bit shorter than ideal. I have a set of Juicy 3’s and a set of Juicy 5’s. The lever on both is the same and sloping so you need to cut the hexagonal nut part back a bit. The caliper on the 5’s is a bango and perfectly flat so the adapter fits perfectly. The caliper on the 3’s has a ridge so also needs a bit of the hexagonal nut part cut a bit. How do you cut the hexagonal parts back easily? Simple, in a lathe or, of you haven’t got a lathe in your tool box, something very similar – an electric drill.

Right, off to the pub now. May add a bit when I get back.

Don’t know if they’re not a bit understaffed/overworked at the moment.

I returned a jersey for a refund 3 weeks ago but heard nothing back (could have got lost in the post). Dropped them an e-mail on Saturday and got a reply on Monday, saying they would sort it out. Haven’t heard anything since, will follow up tomorrow.

Previous refund was about 4 days.

By “next weekend” do you mean this coming weekend 23rd and 24th?

If so, I’m staying near Brecon and looking to do a route probably on Sunday, probably an extended Gap.

Let me know if you’re interested.

Here’s a link to the Brecons mountain biking site.

The Gap is a very good route but it’s a route of two halves – one fantastic riding over a high pass, the other trudging along road and forestry track. But I recommend it.

If you go to the Lakes, do the Walna Scar Road from east to west and loop back to Coniston either via Torver (shorter) or all the way round Coniston Water through the edge of Grizedale. Also Back’o Skiddaw is excellent.

Will send you a few ideas for the Peak District if you mail me.

    Anti-clockwise, DEFINITELY!

The obvious loop from Kentmere, over Green Quarter and up to Haweswater.

Can be nicely combined with a loop northwards over the Garburn Pass

Bought something from him last Wednesday and it arrived Monday morning, so he was still alive at the end of last week.

Having said that it was a granny ring which would be easier to pack and take to the post office than a wheel (if cycling to work).

(Visions of him sitting in his kitchen with your wheel and a pile of cereal boxes and parcel tape!)

Just got rid of one on my daughter’s foot.

Went to doctor and got salicylic acid “paint” prescribed. Think prescribed stuff if stronger than that available over-the-counter.

Applied paint every night for a month or two, filing down remains or previous night’s application with an emery board first.

It then fell off in a sort of scab.

When I was a kid I had a few verrucas and used similar treatment but scraped it with a craft knife instead of emery board (had to be careful with little daughter).

Yours sounds bigger than my daughters but persistance might pay off, otherwise the laser treatment sound effective, if more expensive.

The CD player reads the data in a spiral like the groove on a record (only it starts in the centre and works out)

Polishing the playing surface RADIALLY out from the centre to the edge is your best bet. Polishing in a circular motion only smears the muck/scratches it in a circular pattern which interferes with a continuous chunk of the data (as it's so small) resulting in poor sound.

Let us know if it works

Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie – gobbledegook that gets increasingly desperate for a plot.

The Periodic Table, Primo Levi – Self-indulgent twaddle.

Yellow Dog, Martin Amis – Pointless, pretentious rubbish.

    There are lots more!

Oh yeah, letting air out. You probably have one of the Marzocchi/Schrader valve adapters – use this as it's easy to modulate the flow rate and won't damage the valve like a screwdriver/sharp metal thing.

    Hi Coyote

I have a pair of 06 Marathon SL's which I think are similar to your AM’s other than the travel. I had to take them to bits to fix the TST unit but didn’t service them other than replacing oil.

The left leg will probably have a screw cap under which are two of the frustratingly small Marzocchi valves – this is the negative and positive air. Let the air out of the negative first and then the positive. Repeat a couple of times until you’re certain there’s nothing left in either. Beware of a bit of suspension oil coming out with the air. The valve at the bottom of the left leg is the “progressive”/bottom-out/end-of stroke air. Let all this out too. There should also be some air in the TST cartridge on top of the right leg, under the little rubber cap – guess what, empty this too.

You can download a full service manual for the 06 version forks from here. For mine I actually found a few details were slightly different but it will give you a good starting point.

Top tips for tooling :- For the nuts at the bottom of the legs you will need a special long narrow socket (12mm I think). Alternatively buy a box spanner like this for a couple of quid from a local tool shop and file it down until it fits. I also had trouble finding a socket to fit one of the nuts on the top – it seemed to be between two metric sizes. Eventually I found it fitted an (imperial) spark plug socket perfectly!

    Hope this helps.

    ahwiles RE : London

Wander around anywhere between Covent Garden and Charing Cross. For a bit of culture after the porn the National Gallery off Trafalgar Square used to be free (check on t'interweb). Waterloo is one tube stop south from Charing X so no rush at the end. Alternatively there is a foot bridge across the river and wander around the south bank where London Eye is. British museum in Bloomsbury (nearer St Pancras) is full of stuff we nicked from around the world and also used to be free.

Live in Bristol. Have 2 and 4 year olds so slightly guessing what a 7 year old would enjoy.

Anyway, City Museum on Queens Square is good and free, sure everybody can find something of interest inside (mummies, planes, dinosaurs, stuffed animals etc.). Just opposite is a Wetherspoons (The Berkley) with a family area at the back which would be a good cheap place for lunch.

From museum a not too long walk (or number 8 bus) through the architectural splendor of Clifton to the gorge and suspension bridge. Nice place for a picnic if weather good and playground nearby.

Yes, a ferry to the far end of the harbour (the Novia Scotia, an olde worlde pub) and walk back would be good and not too expensive way to get a good overview of the water front. Down on the docks the Arnolfini has a couple of galleries of modern art – something to amuse everyone, for example click here

About 10 minutes walk from the Arnolfini on Corn Street is St Nicholas Market, a recently restored covered bazaar. There are some nice food stalls there and another Wetherspoons just down the road.

If it's a scorcher, just outside @Bristol in Millenium Square there are some lovely fountains which kids seem to love to play in. Just remember to take towels and swimming stuff.

If you've got a car you could visit St Werburghs city farm. There's a really funky cafe with a little playground.

Hope you can find all these places, if you need more help drop me a line.

    Royston
