    Ouchy :-S

Well in the end the anesthetist strongly recommended a general as I’m otherwise fit (ish) and healthy.

I’m home now and have no less than three lots of lovely drugs to choose from. It doesn’t hurt so much now but when I first woke in the recovery room – my fxuking h3ll!! I’ve never experienced pain like it!!

And a cup of tea afterwards?

Ok, so trying to remain vaguely serious just for the briefest of moments – whaddya fink? I’m not sure I want to hear the drilling/scraping…

So if I go for general do I still definitely get bummed even though it’s BUPA?

Surely I pay for the choice? :-/

My grandfather was a test pilot before joining Bomber Command as a pilot.

He did about 15 missions which is pretty good going as the life expectancy of bomber crew was something like 2.6 missions..

He ditched various bombers both in the sea and over ground, went on to be an RAF test pilot and flew ( I kid you not) over 1100 different planes including all manner of hurricanes and spitfires. He wrote two books which are fascinating but he insisted that he never wants them published….

Oh and a little known fact is that not all CD transports come out of the Sony or Phillips factory equal.

When I worked at Arcam we used to test them by plugging them into a PC and running a diagnostic tool.

Some would pass well within the accepted tolerances whilst others would scrape through!

Re the computer idea .. Ok in theory but who can provide meaningful comparisons on the effective jitter from a pc as source? Also bear in mind it’s not ideal having a card with a DAC built into such an electronically noisy environment.

( One of my ideas for my dissertation was an off-board DAC with FireWire connectivity , back in the day

My 1998 CD-67 is still going strong too… Not bad for a budget player really!

As for losing their edge with time, I guess that in theory the transport could wear which would result in increased jitter/missing data which in turn would mean the correction and filtering electronics might have to work harder. I think the transport would have to be pretty knackered for you to notice it though .

Oh and I guess capacitors in the analogue stage would eventually lose it…

I’m not being very helpful am I? I’d say unless you want to upgrade to something expensive then run the old one into the ground..

Have you looked on Sheffield Forum? Failing that look in the windows of the post offices and newsagents around sharrowvale and ecclesall road; there’s usually loads advertised.

    Good luck!

I had adjustable travel on my Wotans and used it occasionally.

However, I don’t have it now and don’t miss it, especially as big forks these days are so well behaved, i.e. they don’t bob and dive all over the place..

Yeah I read something like that too.. I think there’s a small difference in shim stack or something too.

All I know is that I love mine and genuinely think they out perform even the 36 Vans I had..

If you’re after pure performance the lyrik solo air rc2DH’s are awesome.

Their Mission Control DH damping is streets ahead of bog standard Mission Control and is found in the Boxxer.

Dare I say it, I think they’re even better than the current 36 Float.

Check out the review on BikeRadar too..

Remember, it’s Mission Control DH you’re after not the normal flavour (although that’s by no means bad!)

I won’t lecture you on the perils of finance but I will say that if you’re spending serious wonga then consider the rockshox Lyrik solo air rc2DH.

I’ve always been a 36 fan but my lyriks (with mission control DH damping, as found in boxxers) blows them out of the water!

I’m not the only convert either.. Just a thought :-)

Why bother with a chain device ?

Have you ever tried DHing without one? It’s somewhat frustrating to lose your transmission half way down a run …

I’m also getting a chain device as am totally fed up with my chain bouncing off on mince-core DH days..
    POSTED 23 HOURS AGO #

So, to recap I do actually want a chain device and bashring for my occasional DH and fast, rocky Peaks descents.

I’m certainly a DH-biased trail rider if you know what I mean (and I don’t just mean overweight!)

Clubber – well as per my earlier post I really do need a chain device!

Also I can’t fit a 2*9 setup to my cranks without a bashring taking place of the outer ring..

Cheers guys, it seems 36t is the way to go then really..

I’ve just got to now get over the entirely psychological issue of adding 200g of bash ring and chain device to my bike after having just made it a pound or so lighter through upgrades…

(I’m really not going to notice, it’s a Tracer with lyriks and I’m a light 15 stone myself..)

I have an MRP long range patrol on the way (halfords let me order it as an accessory for my C2W bike! :-) )

Hmm, well I’m hoping 36 up front will be OK – a few years ago I did have a 38t up front and it never felt right somehow..

    RopeyReignRider

I’m not particularly fit so the 34t at the back sounds appealing!

    £400 power cable?

    *snigger*

Hint: look what studios use – bog standard “kettle lead” but with a shed load of power smoothing kit the other end.

Removing transients and maintaining a consistent power supply is so much more worth spending money on.

I’m not saying that interconnects don’t make a difference but when you have 240V zapping down a cable it’s far less relevant!

Aha! Yes I got it in principle it’s just that when I previewed it, it split the URL.

When I submitted it it actually did it properly.

    Thanks

You do all realise that domestic hi-fi is fundamentally flawed in it’s design?

Some manufacturers seem to go to great lengths to create decent products within the boundaries of the excepted “norm” for hifi, others seem to charge crazy money for naff all.

My 2p’s worth is to check out active speakers with a digital input. It’s what studios have done for years and it makes so much more sense to have a speaker crossover working millivolts not dozens/hundreds of volts. It also makes far more sense to have amplifier boards tuned specifically to the individual drivers they control.

Anyway, all this talk of hifi has made me want a new one :-(

Something with as big a dynamic range as possible.

When I was a test engineer for Arcam ( a good few years ago now) we used a Philips test disc that had all sorts on it, ranging from very boomy spoken word to incrediably dynamic and detailed classical recordings.

Also, bear in mind (as some have said) that hi-fi is very subjective and unlike the world of studio equipement for example, where linearity of response is king.

    #

My dissertation was very nearly about the ideal linear response of spherical speaker inclosures.. they would have sounded nice in theory but making a rigid sphere of sufficient density isn’t easy… why the flip did I go into computing and not take up that research degree at York, mutter, grumble, moan

    #end rant

It takes a bit of time but you could always oven bake your own chips from real spuds and use that as one of your 2 fibre portions (as long as you don’t smother them in loads of oil)?

I’ve heard about other people losing weight merely by stopping eating bread..

2.6:1 isn’t particularly low these days.

I think Santa Cruz Blur/Nomad are about that…

low leverage can offer great small bump sensitivity but the shock does have to be extremely controlled (I’m sure the CCDB is).

One thing myself and mrs RRR have tried recently is limiting carbs but not to the Atkins degree.

Generally, we only allow ourselves 2 portions of bread/rice/pasta a day, 2 portions of dairy (cheese mostly) and then as much meat and veg/fruit and eggs as we want (apart from starchy veg like sweet potato and normal spuds too)

.. and then basically don’t touch anything else

so for example, if I have toast for breakfast, one sarnie for lunch then I can’t have pasta or potato for tea etc

It really seems to work well

    just a thought…

I ordered my new elixir carbons at 4pm yesterday and awoke to a text saying they’d be delivered between 1pm and 2pm today (which they were).

Ace service for me at least

(bargain brakes too, £180 a pair for CR Carbons, full retail jobbies and not OEM too)

I was looking at the formula MEGAs for €170 plus €16 post and packaging.

It’s either those (with slightly a too large rotor at back) or a pair of Avid Elixir Carbons for £180..

    What thinks the STW masses?!?

The spacers should be fairly obvious. Excuse my complete lack of technical terns but they’re sat on the compression rod thingy, black things which are narrower in the middle than at edges.

Someone else may be able to describe this better!

I think the latest ones have a new lever compared to the ones I’m looking at.

Still it all sounds pretty positive!

    Cool, cheers!

I’ve heard that the Mega is basically the same as The One but without all the adjustments etc.

I’m quite tempted by them especially at the silly price they’re going for..
