The smell of a mown lawn, a glass of beer by the log fire after a winter ride, standing on one of the local hills in wild weather but the best of all is any time spent with my two boys.

Sorry to hear that Dez. Thoughts with you.
The best thing Biggles did was just to be there, quietly supporting me in a very unassuming way.
I ring him every day for a quick chat and he still does it to this day.

I’d either go whole wobblebox or stick with a tent, trailer tents seem to be the worst of both worlds – you haev a trailer but still have soggy canvas to sort out if it gets wet and you can’t hang it in the garage to dry out.

I don’t and wont ride a road bike because of the complete disregard shown for cyclists around here (Peak District / Sheffield).

When a young lad is knocked off an injured and is told by the woman passenger that the blood is upsetting the kids in the car and she doesn’t want them to be late for school then I think we have reached a tipping point. Complete lack of empathy that he is someone else’s 19 year old kid.

I know it annoys the TG fans but that overbearing arse Clarkson’s rants against cyclists does have an effect on attitudes.

As an ex-biker I gave up after the 4th t-bone SMIDSY at a junction. If people can’t see me on a big bike with headlight on and a dayglo jockstrap, what chance has a cyclist?

When I become ‘Dear Leader’ anyone wanting to learn to drive must have evidence that they have ridden a bike for 12 months beforehand and passed a cycling test. Then for 12 months after they must do a probationary period on a shittly little scooter so they can see just how vulnerable 2 wheel users really are. If will also help them understand road conditions and why both bikes and cyclists will move around potholes and obstructions in the road and not ride in the crap in the gutter.

IMO as long as driving is perceived as a right rather than a privilege, then nothing will change – longer and permanent bans, cars confiscated and crushed, massive fines, lots of cameras – not speeding but for RLJ, hatched box infringement, monitoring junctions.

Possible public floggings and stoning of Audi drivers just because. 😀

Bimey! As if cars towing wobble boxes wasn’t bad enough we are going have bikes with them too. That’s going to be a mare to tow in a crosswind. Think I’ll stick to panniers & a tent.

This kind of news makes me want to stop my two lads riding their bikes on the road.
Until we have some law that states the larger vehicle in an RTC is at fault as the starting point and proceed from there drivers will have no reason to think about how they are driving.

Yesterday I was heading back into the Hope Valley over the Ringinglow Road (for those that know the area) and at the point after the head of the Burbage valley where the road crests a blind brow before passing Higger Tor a car overtook 3-4 cyclists on the brow of the hill. I had to slam on the brakes and pull off the road to avoid him. As I set off a second car tried the same manouver but swerved back behind the group. Just two small examples of the ‘right to pass irrespective’ mindset of many drivers. No wonder the van driver was acquitted, road cyclists are just a nuisance and one reason I avoid riding on roads.

+1 for the Khyam Motordonme – had one for 6 years and it’s stood up to gales, rain, hail, sun, kids and pops up in minutes, takes down just as quickly – great bit of kit.

I ride rigid SS only and have done for the past 3 years and now gone SS Fat Bike. Lived and ridden in the Peak for over 20yrs – each change brings new challenges and revitalises trails that have become boring. Build a cheap one out if bits and give it a go, it may be an instant hit it may take a few rides but it really is good fun. Re spinning out, I use that time to take in what’s around me and enjoy the ride.

“Rural custom & practice” excuse is just bollocks.

It happens out here all the time, but there’s nothing to worry about when pissed up drivers are rattling about in landrovers and big pickups, what harm can they do?!?!?

How are finding fat biking rogerthecat? What bike do you have?
(Asks in genuine curiosity – had my first ride of a fattie*at the weekend and loved it).
    *bike

Bought a complete bike with “modified” singlespeed Kona Unit frame with decent fatbike wheels and kit on with the thought that, if I took to it, I would upgrade the frame first and then slowly improve the whole bike.

I have had it about a month, I have not ridden any of my other bikes since it arrived. I am slower than ever, but enjoy every second of my ride.

It’s racked up now and ready for some bike and bivvy trips – it’s just a real hoot, I’ve ridden the same trail around the Hope Valley for 20 years and this has just given me a fresh reason to go oput and explore them all over again.

Had a bizarre discussion with a couple of ‘blokes’ at a clients premises, they hailed him as some kind of subversive and outsider railling against the status quo – they were clueless that he was friends with CMD and the Ginger Witch and very much an insider with some less pleasant circles. His only redeeming feature is he punched Piers Morgan.

There’s lots and all different types, Coopers is good for families, big fields, pick your spot.
Down the lane is Fieldhead, smaller and you have to park then carry your kit but there are some nice spots.
Laneside near Hope is a bit bigger, by the main road but really well managed, if a bit strict.
Eden Tree is just outside Bradwell, cheap but in earshot of the cement works so there can be background noise.
I know the family who own Knotlow – lovely people but they have had a bit of aggro from Peak Park recently so worth checking hey can still take tents.
    And there’s lots more.

@oldnpastit – Sounds like positive news. Amazing thing the human brain.
My mum had several major strokes, neusrosurgery, more strokes, internal bleeds into the brain over a 6 month period. Each time they readied us for the very worst and were very blunt in stating that she would not make it. That was 20 years ago, she’s 88 now and the only residual effects are a hilarious propensity to use the wrong words and names, and the scars from the neurosurgery. During the 2 years all this was happening and her recovery period we never gave up, we sat with her, read to her, talked to her, my uncle tickled her foot (something he used to do to her when they were kids and she hated it) anything to interact with her. She confounded a lot of people.

The level of recovery that is possible can be surprising, I hope your lad has the same willpower and resilliance. Stick with it, you are doing a fantastic job for him and keep updating this thread.

Quite normal from my perspective. Started mountain biking for the solitude and to get away from people.
The occasional big group ride is fun but I work with people all day so it’s nice to have thinking time.

Met a few folks from here on Pook’s Pootles, everyone seemed quite normal with the exception of Hora (wet & misty btw Mark) met quite a few more since Rushupgate and made some good friends through the ensuing battle with DCC.
No asshats to report in those groups which makes me suspect that, because every group has one, it’s probably me!!

Great idea. Two people to point out my shortcomings, lack of forethought, inability to predict the future, read their minds, paint, decorate garden, tile, clean and tidy. Somehow the remote possibility of some 3 up bedroom gymnastics has lost it’s appeal.

    Turned 50 las March.
Until that day I played league hockey, volleyball, cycled and seemingly was indestructible.
Since then I have had an achillese tear, 2 lots of abdomnal surgery, developed back ache, started to need specs, and slowed down by 40%.
I now only ride and am supported in this by industrial quantities of brufen.
