A pair of carbons of the bay of fleas and you’ll be fine.
QR skewers are ok, what are you planning to do that requires big axles?

@wonny j – that has thoroughly depressed and disheartened me.

And in answer to you last question – if you can get on with clips then you can pull as well as push which is bloomin handy when it gets steep or your legs are knackered.

    Samuri speaks the truth.
I currently ride a 34t wobbly front ring and 18 cog for the Peaks at the moment mainly due to the steep climbs, 32:16 is a good start and work from there.

I would go for a SS chain having used others and broken them, i’d also forget the halflink chains, they seem to be made from cheapo chocolate metal.

I ran and Answer tensioner on the full suss SS and that was expensive but faultless.

The rest of the kit is just a bunch of spacers and a cog from a cassette – you can get SS kit but why not keep it simple and cheap to start off.

If you can stretch to a wobbly ring from Goldtec they make a big difference clickety go 2 teeth higher than normal.
Also get yourself over to the FB group OneCog and join in – it’s an education. 😯

+1 for firepits – big logs around them for seats – Llyn Gwynant do steel fire pits which are great until some knobs pinch three or four – they only stipulate that you buy their logs which are a little more expensive than normal nets but hey, they bring them to you. I guess they have some kick back from the log man. They also ban any radio/stereo and only allow acoustic music which adds to the atmosphere [/ageinghippy]

We had fire pits and logs in Yosemite and it makes the evenings brilliant fun.

Dti – that sounds ok if you are joining the band of campsites that don’t allow one/two night stays – makes touring in a campervan a pain in the arris.

I think there’s far too much tolerance of low level bad driving and not enough enforcement

    This.
However, enforcement requires resources and resources cost money.

I’m sure that I have bad habits but I hope that they are not anything like the things I regularly see on the roads. Perhaps cameras on roundabouts and complicated junctions would be a start, then offer a retraining course (a proper one) with a pass/fail at the end for those adjudged dangerous.

It’s still way to easy to get a license and keep it.

Messiah – I shall be cycling sans shorts tonight and will report back on the levels of engorgement achieved!! 😯

@cbmotorsport – the brambles round here in spring make my arms look like I self harm, they have had their fun by now and handed the baton on to the nettles who will then tag team the thistles after which it will be back to mud!

Re Doc leaves – couldn’t find any, anywhere nearby.

It seems to me that what is needed is a powerful pro-cycling organisation that will not sit on its hands and bluster rather than get stuck in.

One that will scream from the rooftops, take on the media, challenge the status quo, lobby and one that represents all aspects of cycling.

Where are ours when this happens – no where to be seen.

The RHA may not be everyone’s cup of tea but they do get their across and defend their corner very well indeed.

Bit close to home as my youngest and his mate have had a rough time because they are not in the footy/chav/little shit cohort. The online atacks were a bit full on and relentless – walking away totally from the internet would have deprived them of communications with family and friends elsewhere in the UK. Parents need to be hyper aware of what’s happening with their kids. So sad that someone online can cause a young girl to do this, if mags go in bags so be it. No great shakes.

And if they are dressed like they are going to a funeral (please define funeral wear),

Best mate’s wife insisted that we all wore bright colourful clothes to her funeral as she wanted us to celebrate her not mourn in a black, Victorian stylee – guess we would have been wrongly identified in this instance.

@johndoh – I use a calendar, then it’s easy to book all of the appropriate tradespeople to arrive at the correct time, they seem to like this too as they can plan their work on a similar device.

It’s a handy thing and we hang ours on the kitchen wall so we can all see it, a sort of domestic dropbox without the connectivity issue.

They’ll be as popular as iPhones soon, mark my words. 😀

That was some outpouring Cougar – good for the soul though and helpful to others, thanks for sharing it.

My youngest was a bit fussy in his earlier days, so we got him involved in the whole process from choosing the menu to cooking the food – worked a treat. He will now try anything veggie and any style of cooking.

    a 12 month waiting list
Seriously, who would wait 12 months for a tiler? And who plans tiling 12 months in advance?

Yep, and lots of people round here who want a proper job.
Never knew tiling was considered an impulse purchase,we are building an extension with an en-suite and started planning it in Jan/Feb for start April next year – planning permissions etc. Even retiling the kitchen was planned well in advance so we could buy a cooker/cupboards etc

We used to do alot of work with start ups via the local Chamber of Horrors / Business Links (but stopped as its about as much fun as riding a road bike).

Organic SEO is better than adwords, a well optimised site with a quick couple of months Adwords should do the trick for the website. If you are a tiler get a gallery up there too, always nice to show off good work.

If you are building your own site, get a proper domain name and associated emai – looks a lot more pro than cantbearsed@gmail.com

Get recommendations, the best sales tool you will ever have. Our local tiler has a 12 month waiting list but he’s brilliant and everyone round here want him to do their work.

Nice business cards (go here cards made easy[/url] but get a proper design done) – Beers & pizza for the design work is a good swap with anyone creative and get lots of them, then scatter them like confetti. Make sure your web address is on them.

Post office windows, shops, supermarkets, petrol stations, builders merchants, DIY stores, bathroom & kitchen sales offices – lots of them have noticeboards or will let you pop them on counters.

Approach building firms who may sub tiling work, see if there is a free sheet newspaper locally, they can be cheap for the occasional ad.

If you have a van/vehicle get it sign written and make it stand out, we have a van and it gets spotted all over the place.

Good luck and pity you’re not round here.

R2 debate descended into the “there are lots of dangerous cyclists about, not surprised this sort of thing happens” type conclusion. I am now hoarse with ranting at the idiots they seem to recruit to these panels where the **** is the cycling lobby?

@ton – even the plod have stopped calling things an RTA because there is, in almost every case, a person in the right and a person in the wrong. No matter what the excuses may be, the car was in the wrong.

R2 now – I am screaming at the radio again!!

How far does this new cortege discretion idea extend? Wedding cars, tourists in convoy, lorries in convoy, vintage car rallies – the more I roll this one round in my head the more absurd the plod’s comments become. If I were the cyclist I would be lodging a complaint to the local plod HQ.

    rogerthecat

Identifying how many cars are in the cortege through a quick glance over the shoulder would be a bit difficult, especially if the cyclist is also expected to recognise “funeral clothes”.

If he had pulled over and waited, how many cars should he allow to pass, a funeral cortege could be 20 cars long or 5 and it could already be interspersed with other traffic bu the time it reached him.

IMO the driver is completely at fault, a complete lack of understanding of how another road user behaves, and another great reason for me to ride ont he roads as little as possible – they are full of twunts.

Never had much money as a kid but always had brilliant, traditional food – Mum could make an old army boot taste like heaven. Went to Uni and encountered pasta, curry and vegetarianism – been a fussy eater ever since. 😀

Getting worried now, I’m 5’10 with a 31.5″ inside leg which, if I take off 12″ for my neck & head, means my torso is only 27″ long – which organs am I missing! 😯

Apart from Dean I cannot remember being surrounded by giants on the Pootles -does this mean gravity is stronger up here so we are all shorter.

I didn’t think he was being specific about Africa, it seemed to me that he may have been referring to any of our old colonies. Or any other coumtry inhabited by Jonny Foreigner.

He’s a risible old fool seeking media attention and to misinform the public, whilst reinforcing the prejudices of his own supporters – well done the BBC for failing to tear him apart in this morning’s interview.
