About to go into my 17th winter of commuting on a old railtrack, an hour each way. Dont forget your back lights! They will save your life more than the front! Thats another discussion.

Hope R2i LED is proving great, I can get 4 rides out of it and know where Iam charge wise.

The big issue is the quality of the mount, it has a sprung element to it, so can take vibration, knocks etc etc. The ali one is as strong as it gets; the plastic one is no good. Also its a twist and the light is demounted.

Finally, service is excellent and resale value holds well. Also it wont burn your house down.

Based on 22 years of riding to work, these will get you home

    Merino anything
    Windproof anything
    Sudacrem and baby wipes
    Waterproof socks; sealskinz etc
    Hi Viz, scotchlite, Proviz
    A woolly hat
    Windproofshell gloves;
    Specialised gloves
    Spare pair of gloves
    A headtorch for punctures etc.
Two tubes and a puncture kit
    Chaintool and links

Money for chips/pub/6 pack of beer/ bacon roll and tea

Burning desire to get home for bath, beer and sofa

Proviz reflective jackets, bit sweaty but they light up like nothing else. They catch the daylight even, the office complain when I hang it up. I noticed I was given a decent berth by cars.

Also put some stuff on your rucksack or one of those Hump covers.

Hi Viz yellow is for daytime, reflective for night.

Cheers everyone, including the ones pointing I aint doing much:)
I am on my feet all day, surrounded by kids with all sorts of lurgs. The flu jab fends most of it off. Nearing fifty, I am somewhat knackered at the end of the day for some reason. Anyhow theres a pub on the way home, which means the last mile is fuelled by lagerzade.

A bacon roll sorts me out! I have tea, bran flakes and a multi vit to get me there.

Any thoughts on vit c and d?

I am going for some XT’s and see how it goes. I am very disappointed in Shimano here, given the reliability of pretty much everything they produce.

Cheap as they are, they should last, especially with trickle down tech.

I had a pair of 747’s from approx 1995, which I have just sold and they were still good and approx 4 others, which though worn never had this binding problem.

I suppose the solution is to check them just before two years is up and send them back?

When I took them apart everything was fine, then when putting it back in the problem returns, I think its some kind of mis machining on the plastic collar that means it gets compressed.

Maybe its the batch that Merlin had ?

Cheers for the links, very interesting!

Any thoughts on taking my bike out there? We are flying with Korean Air and have just booked the tickets but not investigated that side. The last times I went I either paid nothing or £25 at most…. it may have changed

I did the 42 back in 1995 on a rigid Rocky Mountain with cantis, one of the best rides ever.

So can you put a threaded BB in a pressfit frame?

    rocky-mountain

Its one of these, I have looked everywhere to get some specs; its been brilliant, but this BB is appaling; I may have to go for Hope or Chris King.

    well… it happened!

screwfix no nonsense penetrating oil, sprayed it on, brushed the area first with a small wire brush and hey presto… this was on 30 year old frame left outside.

all replies appreciated, but do go easy first.

anyhow, rode the bike with the right height saddle on my test trail and crikey a 30 year old bike rides really good and I mean good!

screwfix penetrating oil did the trick on a 30 year old post… be patient first.

Cheers everyone. I have quite big hands,so a double wrap may be okay. I can also see the spesh stuff being good, maybe a muscle memory thing to have the same set up on each bike. First world problems.

Rode to London on the River Lea, approx 40 miles in total on Racing Ralphs 33c, 17 stone on a Diverge. Very good at negotiating puddles and grit, very comfortable.

Also done it with a 8 pint hangover on Schwalbe 32’s. A short ride turned into a long one.

    Why not the trp’s?

Maybe go for some secondhand Hopes? If they go wrong, you can get them repaired, sometimes free, but will be like new.

The issue with cheap lights can be the quality of the mounts, connectors, chargers and the beam pattern.

I know its money, but a good set of lights will make it enjoyable and be confident, get you back home with some charge left and can save your life or injury. I always ride with a small front led light, so on road I can dip down and be seen and not blind others. Just remember to get a good back light too and a Pro Viz jacket.

I think I iwll try the saddle and slimmer pedals, got some bear traps on at the moment. Also some penetrating oil and or plus gas; i dont want to wreck the frame, with just a few weeks to go.

I would have got more sympathy from my work if i had broken both my legs and better treatment. Many of the causes were work related and abated when fixed.

It was only when I pointed at my two managers and said I would sue both of them and the organisation if they did not help and treat me better as the OH report said, did things change.

tedspecial; it will be legal and you would have done it too…

back ground is; the bike was chained up for a year or so in my village. some nice bits on it; campag chain set, suntour thumbie. had a word with the local pc, who said lets unclip it and i gave a donation to a local charity.

so its been outside for a long time; i cannot shift the bottom bracket, so the method of attack is from above.

Probably won’t burst into flames at least.

Had chinese lights before, have been okay, however the connectors may be fragile.

I would go for a whole unit like the Hope r2i, much easier to take on and off,I swapped over from R4 for this reason as I was commuting.

Price? you will spend more on these and replacing them over the life time of hope or exposure, who will fix them up if they go wrong.

just done them; its a bit of both.
However I did read you adjust the pads from one side; however I have done both and seems really good. Pads in good condition; just needed to get the canal path out of them.

Cheers, probably best to set up first with the allen key then as they wear use the cable?

Pretty knackered pads after 40 miles on a canal in rain and liquid grit!

    Long term test reportish

Fantastic bit of kit, i do look like a reflective bacofoil turkey on a bike though.

Really comfortable, a bit sweaty maybe, but warm and no draughts. Zips a bit liable to stick due to being small tooth, so be careful.

Drivers give you more room and in sunlight it does light up. Its a bit odd as you only see grey, but it relies on reflected light and everyone looking at it see it, if that makes sense.

Its the catseyes of cycling kit.

A clean chain and clean shifting. Tyres at the right pressure

Never tighten bolts on a Sunday night, something will break and theres no chance of replacements for Monday morning commutes.

Got what I thought was the right size, just got an xxl by exchange.

I trust with a Hope 4 a stonking Cat Eye and bits of yellow slap straps reflective I may be seen. I ride to and from work in the dark.

Actually cars do stop with the Hope, even on the lower beams thinking I am motorbike,
