On Stans website they sell Velox tape, maybe the solution is this and two wraps of tape? Maybe the Velox supports the tape being pushed into the spoke holes by the higher pressure of the tyres?

Just did my Hope 29 er with Stans tape and all good.Gorilla Tape may work for some, but Stans Tape is made fro the purpose. Would you use sellotape as a rim tape?

A style disaster perhaps, but when you see £200 shooting off your face or sinking rapidly downwards, these things can be overlooked. Anyhow you dont see them.

I am digging the flight idea, just for the hell of it! I will be based in Browns/Rothsay Bay area.

My brother in law has a yacht and he sails to Great Barrier alot, maybe I could figure something out with him… drop me off at Tapotupotu Bay? Mind you just googled the road out of there….

Keep the suggestions coming, all appreciated!

cheers, is it best to head north to south or vica versa; prevailing winds etc.

It will be nice to bring my bike to NZ, I still have my 1995 Rocky Mountain, that I did the 42 Traverse on complete with a plastic tiki glued to the headtube.

Cheers everyone, so far. Did you do it in a day and in how long.

I was wanting to do the Twin Coast Trail too, was thinking of linking it up.

Any other thoughts? I want to rid in the landscape and see it this time, rather than get stuck in a forest for the day.

Whats the current situation with bikes on planes these days, the 1990’s were great and you were welcomed with them.

Having commuted for 20 years by bike, bus, train and as passenger in cars; mix it up. As I teach it gets a bit hard as I get older. Do you have a desk job?

The best thing to do is to mix it up,so it becomes a treat; riding in the dark can be fun, but not ten times a week.

My commute is a ten mile ride to a train station then the train, with my wife help we worked on variable days you drive/drop off or pick up/ I buy wine, petrol and have a chat without kids around, with the odd pub stop, then always cook ( in fact I cook 80% of the time)

Do it at least once a week, its good for the soul.

You have to get hold of the School, Easter or not, some will get the designated safeguarding staff into action. That way it can be set up and thought about before the kids get back. They may well link this to other cases in the school, which you will not be told about.A plan of action can be formulated.

I teach in a College, 60% of issues between student stem from ‘social media’ and the Pandoras box that is the phone. We get kids coming to College with their lives blighted by this and other things. We have a whole student support department and everyone is trained in safeguarding.

Don’t be frightened of standing up to it and for her; she will thank you later on that you looked out for her.

However we have given them access to all this, which frightens me. The last thing in Pandoras box is Hope though.

I think these guys think they know everything; the sealant; reason why he can’t find the puncture still makes ne laugh.

Garston is Garston; the security guards ( what train has these!) always say once you have gone past there, all problems stop!.

I also live no where near there

Its kind of an emergency bike idea, that I can take with me to join up some dots, today it took me 3 hours to go 20 miles; everything was SNAFU on a Monday morning.

I am sure it could get a bit tricky, but calm seas never made a good sailor…

How about a pair of On One Marys on it?

Trying to think outside the box here, or maybe its the beer!

I reckon my ‘bodge’ is the best way, means you can keep your trusted grips; foam is just rubbish. It worked really well the first time.

I did baulk at paying a tenth of the price for some bar tape as well!

    Thanks for the replies.
I placed the gears and brake levers up next to, but not at the weld.

I have used a normal pair of lock on grips, then cut down another pair with the lock on bit butting up to each other, if that makes sense. Then used a Hope Bar Doctor to finish off and keep it al tight

I used PDW grips and cut off Renthals. Looks like a very very solid set up so far.

The bars are brilliant, I have suffered from numb hands and nerve damage, from something else. Done about 40 miles so far and very very comfortable.

Got them on tonight, they are beasts!

Love how the hand positions encourage you to not have your hands over the brakes, gears always, so you concentrate on handling rather than brake, change gears to get through things. Well that’s the view and thoughts from the sofa looking at the bike in the living room.

Any thoughts on angle? In line with stem?

All I know is my JRT cocks his legs and can crap at the same time, he can also do it normally and looks very happy with himself.

It stinks and is warm when I pick it up.

Thanks everyone, it gets more confusing on the website!

My main issue is stopping the eyewatering and looking fairly normal!

    These look ok

Thanks, I don’t like the shape though.

I want a traditional look, I have some Randolph Engineering glasses, but I look like something out of Chips, well more Fish and Chips.

Sidi Dominators, SealSkinz knee length socks, merino and possum blend socks underneath and some good innersoles.

Its all about layers, you can remove and replace each one. In the cold, I always take two pairs of gloves; at bacon roll and tea time my first pair are always cold and wet!

The issue is that your feet are pushing through cold air faster than any other part of your body and are furthest from your heart and blood supply, hence the strain on them.

    Dear All,

My father died very suddenly when I was 18 and he was 47. I am now 50.

Somehow my mother held us all together, my brother and I both developed good careers; he building, me an artist and teacher.

Oddly we all love cycling and my brother is the only one who can drive. My Mum has ridden in her 60’s the Santiago trail alone.

The key is pick up the torch, ride through the mud and rain, ride in the morning/night, into the dawn and into the sunshine. Have the odd puncture and keep on going.

My mission is to die of old age on a bike.

    Hmmm,

Maybe I should have mentioned that the bike and the Hope are both QR versions…. Do I have to get a new hanger or should I bolt it all together and see if I die on a test run?

so the point of the tensioner is to stop the chain falling off, but if you can get the chain tight enough it won’t as long as it does not pull the wheel out of the dropouts?

Basically I want that look I had as a kid with one gear and one brake on the right as I am right handed. Just got to paint it with blue metalic Humbrol paint…

    2) when you put on full force to go uphill – the sudden loss of tension there leading to a nuts stem interface moment

I have had my kids…..dont need them anymore the wife says.

I have a 29 Inbred, heavy but once it gets going to flies along. Strong, stable, pretty nimble etc.The paint is appalling.Just get some really good wheels.

Often ride with guys on carbon £6k bikes and match on the flat and downhill, but they lose me on the ups (which is why they got them). I do remind them if we crash they will probably put an insurance claim against me due to cost of bike…

I have a 1990 Cannondale I want to build up. I would like it to have a cleaner look.

Just wondering why you need it? I am not new to all this but my brain cant work out why its needed! and this is better than google

    Hi Rich,

Its a 2015/16 Smartweld, Ali frame, spyre brakes.
I dropped the Hope into it fits, but not tried the tyre or cassette.

    Would you need another hanger?

No photos, but went out with 5 others in mud, I ended up two punctures, no working back brake, dodgy front mech. Rather than hold them up, trying to repair the second puncture, I bailed out, asked the wife to pick me up, who did with a sausage roll to eat.
