the frame was a reduced one £179, not tapered.

the frame looks good, but has a few scratches and blemishes;not complaining. headtube and bottom bracket were totally fine which is the important thing.

    cheers,
looks like there will be about a 1-2 mm of headset tube face showing if that makes sense, ie the cups do not cover the whole face,

i am sure it will be fine….

having ridden nz trails and that is a narrow one, probably in origin a maori path falling off a hill in the shaky area of christchurch; if you are in front, you own the trail.

the guy with the camera was trying to barge past, he was lucky not to be thrown off the side!

I’m with the guy in front, he was giving it some, riding a hardtail with bar ends and v brakes and giving it some, smooth riding and looks like no braking, the other guy on a full suspension jumping around.

he should have ridden behind him and watched and learnt.

it looks like the guy in front let him go, then came in front of him again and was holding him off for a bit, and got pissed off with a back seat driver.

always had my wheels built up by hand.

rough estimate is 100 miles, then see whats going on, it should be just a tweak here and there, nothing major.

sounds like a bad un sadly, what did they say?

if they do the dirty on you, then ask for the build cost back or contact their distributor of parts and a general blackening of their name via here.

i have heard more bad stories than good of bike shops; let the good ones rise to the top.

my problem is lack of cash and looking at this, which seems a killer price makes the most sense.

i suppose anythings better than my old rigid.

    cheers for the replies,
riding rigid is getting a bit harsh and the advice on 100 seems right, the fs bikes i have ridden seems to be a bit like an old bed.

i would probably sort the wheels and tyres out to sort the noodly wheels/cornering.

any other thoughts on geomety, is race/xc too harsh or would i need a slacker angle.

    hi all,
glad i dropped by again here.
there are footpaths through the woods, which means it is open to the public…?

maybe we should clear the trails as often as we can in harmergreen, i rode up the bridleway, simply as i was knackered. however will be riding on tuesday night.

bramfield has a lot of work going on, as is sherrardswood.lots of felling and clearing. seems like branches are being strewn across the paths; its very horsey round there, so they may be causing more damage than us.

if everyone doeas a bit with a folding bow saw and some heaving, should be fine.

finally; maybe if they are paintballing/little soldiers activities it may be an insurace thing to keep us out of there.

Endurance in dogs, lets remember what they are bred for.

border terriers were bred to keep up with a horse all day and hunt otters, JR’s are ratters border collies, well it can go on.

maybe a chiwawa’s gonna struggle to keep up!

if a dog’s bred to keep up with a horse, its going to keep up with you.

its the wheels that are the problem; friends have had rabbits run through the wheel as it may see it as an open space.

Keep going with the training, it works after a while; you just have to stare him out. Bit like kids, just when you think you may give up , they give in.

i think they all want to get off the lead so they can do what dogs do; look at it, sniff it, pee on it run onto the next thing.

    Is 1 year too young?

i think the issue is to check your breed and see if they suffer from joint issues, jack russels suffer from luxuriating patellas that means they hop and skip as the tendons do not drop back easily.

i think a mix of speeds, take rests and treats.

I have taken our Jack Russel on a 4.5 mile loop thats bridlweays and paths.

Trigger loves it, snarls, growls and runs alongside the pedals. He is a dog that is better off the lead than off and sticks to me.

We did a test and he hit 29 mph, running with a stick in his mouth.

Dogs were made for running in a pack; the only worry is the wheels and his paws may not mix.

would your recommend a clear top coat?

it will be a black and raw build,no colour to speak of.

i really want to get my old manitou billet stem on it; all 120 mm of it.

noisy due to higher ‘grain’ of tarmac, big cambers to shoot off rain, lots of uphill and downhill twisty turny stuff. steam rises when its just rained. great drains with nets in them. ring tightening corners with steep drop off, brilliant sunshine and four seasons in one day; thats just the roads

you will see very few drivers, you will wave at anyone south of picton in relief that someone else is out there.

in auckland, anymore than 6 drivers queing will be reported on the news as a major traffic hazard.
watch out for traffic cops early in the morning checking for milfs on the sav blanc already.

finally chinese drivers…… only when you get there will you understand this

not sure of measurments etc; however

get some pace carbons if you can still can.
my drop outs have cracked, but you can get them replaced, which is okay on 8 year old forks!
the machining and measurements are excellent

i got a pair of one one steels; very strong and in tracking, but agricultural in measurements, rough and ready. you could hit anything with these.

if you can get kona forks, you have the best of both.

legend has it that kona test rides would always fit rigid to get accurate feedback on the frames

ok, i am gonna go for a penny farthing now, big wheel at the front, small at the back;no suspension, small stem, wide handlebar, no puncture tyres and made of iron, a true 69 er

this looks fun; i just want to go faster, but this may shorten the ride!

26 always feels a bit of a pig to ride, but when you stand up and do the twisty stuff( precious little round here) its makes sense.

the riding we do is often finding ways linking up good twisty bits!

if i am head of any comments about driving to trail centres; i cannot drive!

    however……

john stamstead was my inspiration in the 1990’s lived in a tree house, rode to races, won them and rode back, even if they were thousands of miles away and trained by riding for 8 hours on a roller looking at a white wall to get used to the idea of riding in the artic.

though according to gary fisher he invented montain bikes, so its all his idea really( ahem), wonder if jeff jones could sue him for intellectual property rights.

i would buy a jeff jones anytime, but need a lottery win first.

    hi,
was making a comment on how trails are getting blocked by ‘land owners’ and on the other hand, ‘human beings’ are attacking animals; we are caught in the middle and getting hassle for just wanting to ride.

i rember in the old days there were studies on how trails and land is affected by users; horses, motorbikes, 4×4 dig into the land, bikes go over it leaving very little disturbance, ramblers just froth at the mouth when anything without two legs approaches them.

thanks for the replies, i need something for £1k for two reasons; i have to learn to drive this year(44; its an adult requirement) and get to NZ.

It may have to be a buy bits and bobs bike; having ridden rigid for 8 years now i am out of the loop on suspension!

can you use normal suspension forks on the frames; have seen some excellent DT Swiss(aka pace) half price. I have theory you can get a £2k bike for £1k if you shop around buying bits.it may look like a TK maxx bike, but it will be unique….

Its a well established route, not sure if horses use it as well. Sometimes we ride back up it as its that good.

There are lots of paths etc and no signs as is the case on the Woodhall estate that covers most of Bramfield. This is where shooting and forestry work takes place. Harmergreen is a woodland and is used by many people apart from the Scouts.

My concern is that someone will get arsey and string wire and such like up.

Its getting a bit pitch forkery round here;to the south of Harmergreen, there have been cattle attacked by dogs on purpose and in Digswell a shetland pony was savaged by a dog in the middle of the night. He was 33 years old and had to be put down.

hi, cheers, there are paths through and i think bridleways,

however our trail runs to the east side of the wood parallel to a bridleway. its a good bit to shoot down with twists and turns and all the good stuff…… aw well we will just have to clear it, ride back up and down again.. was great in the snow last year. anyone know it?

like the look of the singular bikes; bikes with bar ends, now thats more like it…

what happening at on one, they have no 29 ers built up for sale; is it winter or have they spent all their money on titus?

yep there are loads and everyones on the bandwagon, but what are people riding and finding good?

    imagine if at the start of mtb ing someone had got their act together on supplying 29 inch tyres and we would be discussing what 26 er to get, from good old wiki;

In the early 1980s, the size of the wheels for the emerging mountain bikes was undecided. So when English off-road cycling pioneer Geoff Apps contacted Gary Fisher and Charlie Kelly with news that he had built a prototype off-road bicycle that used 700c Nokian snow tires from Finland, they were intrigued. In December 2006, Gary Fisher, speaking about the growing popularity of 29ers, gives his perspective: “We got some tires from Geoff Apps really early on and we [Fisher and Kelly] said ‘Holy Toledo!’” But the poor supply situation of the larger diameter tires meant the fledging MTB industry stuck with the smaller wheel size.” [4] The first Geoff Apps designed 700c off-road bicycle was made in 1981 and was marketed as the Aventura by Apps’ own company, Cleland Cycles Ltd , between 1982 and 1984. However production bikes used the more readily available Nokian 650b tires.

not riding because…. had proper flu for a week, went back to work for a week, felt great went riding last sunday and bang; chest infection and another week off work. doctor said you need 3 weeks before you can do aerobic exercise.

and this is the weekend to be riding; rock solid ground, snow and sunshine out there! better than summer

everything from sets of logs to branches, all deliberate and set so that a key points you could not jump it etc.

its ironic that its the scouts stopping people from enjoying and using the woods….
harmergreen woods are ancient and have well established routes through it, not like mardley heath which was an old dump. ( the roller coaster is always good)

remember the trick of using a steel bolt to tension everything up, then put the alu bolt in to fix. snapped a few to many.
