Re the return thing, I know the seller has to pay for postage if you’re sending faulty goods back for a refund, but I had to look into this ages back and ended up paying postage as I couldn’t find anything in the SOGA or DSR saying seller should cover postage of itmes returned for repair. Didn’t look that hard though.

Well as expected, all of the moco oil was sitting in the lowers. Replaced moco seals, topped up with fresh oil. Replaced oil in lowers. I’m a bit confused because the old seals looked ok, but anyway the forks now work fine. I’ll give it a day or two to make sure, but it looks good.

Yeah it stinks but CRC are right. They don’t have to pay for return postage. You might get somewhere playing hardball though, given that the particular batch of forks seems to be dodgy, and bad news travels fast online.

Also remember that if you’re starting from scratch you need more than just the moco kit, so sending them back may be cheaper.

No it’s not the floodgate. There’s a noticeable lack of damping overall, and it wouldn’t explain the loss of travel.

    No clunking noise, no.

Moco kit was £18 plus a fiver postage from TF. There would be additional expense if I didn’t already have the tools and oil etc. though.

To be honest I’ll be very surprised if the service doesn’t fix them. The forks are essentially very simple inside so apart from the seal on the moco piston failing I can’t see what else it could be. Oil leaking into the lowers matches all three symptoms.

The fix (if it works) is just a motion control service, so won’t invalidate the warranty, and I’d rather do it myself in an hour or so than send them back and wait weeks.

Of course if it’s something more serious then they’ll have to go back, but that’s a last resort in my book considering the weather we’re getting.

My service kit is due to arrive today so I’ll let you know how it goes, no problem.

This exact same thing has happened to my Pike 454 air u-turns from CRC. I’ve got a moco service kit in the post from TF. Spoke to Tim today and described the symptoms. he reckons (as I did) that indeed some oil has leaked into the lowers. If it turns out I can’t fix them then they’re going back to CRC.

Maybe oil has leaked from the motion control unit into the lower, which stops the stanchion moving through the full range?

Same thing has happened to my pikes which I’ll be opening up this week to investigate.

R&R is good stuff. It gives the smoothest quietest drivetrain of any lube I’ve tried. Does wash out though in prolonged (like a day) heavy rain.

Thanks Keva. It was the clamp after all.

Took it all apart, cleaned and greased, and it’s fine now. I was totally convinced it was the saddle. What is it with bikes and noises? It reminds me of the time when I dismantled pretty much my whole drive train, chainrings off and everything, to find a creak which turned out to be the rear qr.

    Bikes. Bwoody hell.

    copper grease does the trick.

Where? Are you saying it could be the rail/clamp making the noise?

    Rockplough

It’s deffo the saddle. It stops when I don’t pedal, or when I get out of the saddle. If I take the saddle and post out and press the saddle on the floor it creaks. Also it only creaks on one side of the saddle so I don’t think the seatpost bolts are to blame. Post is a Thomson so the bolts are fore/aft.

As well as the GT85 I dripped some chain lube in between the rail and it’s housing. The lube disappeared into the gap.

    Doin my head in.

Just get a Shimano. £30 or so. Hopes are nice but they don’t last twice as long, do they?

Psychle, It’s a good question. I think it’s easy for people to label them as such. There are fascist undertones to their nationalism, anti-liberalism/intellectualism, and I think some of their rhetoric amounts to nothing more than propaganda. These are not unique to the BNP though. For me they are not out-and-out fascists.

Cool, can you be convicted for ‘holocaust denial’ in UK too?

    No.

We do not believe in free speech for Fascists.

The whole point of freedom of speech is to defend the expression of views you don’t agree with. Dispensing with it when confronted with such views is itself the preserve of Fascism.

Also as your post points out, less people voted for the BNP than before. How is this ‘the rise of Fascism’?

Adjustable will be fine if you’re careful. It’s a big nut and not that tight, so you’d do well to round it off.

I never think to shop there, though, for my MTB stuff.

I didn’t even know they did MTB gear, but BB prices are so daft just now I was searching far and wide.

Aye aye ……… the ‘bleeding-hearts’ are back on here.

If not wanting to drop nukes on non-combatants makes me a ‘bleeding-heart’ then yes.

Almost all the soldiers on the allied side were civilians who had been conscripted into this war.

Yes of course, the same was true on all sides but they were combatants nonetheless.

Would it have been possible to conquer and pacify japan without causing more than 100000 civilian casualties? Seems very unlikely.

I don’t know to be honest, but surely it gives you a chance to at least try to avoid them, unlike a nuclear bomb.

so, tell me again, who decided nth korea can’t have some big bombs

    The West.

    a) Give up and go home
    b) Blockade the country (much easier said than done incidentally, remember a certain A. Hitler tried it on us for quite a while and failed)
    c) Invade with resultant massive loss of life on both sides.
    d) Deploy new super weapon that is so powerful that it will convince this fanatical enemy to give up without any further bloodshed.

Yes, but perhaps I should have been clearer. The point I was trying to make was of military versus civilian deaths. To me an invasion resulting in military losses, however heavy, is preferable to dropping nuclear bombs on civilians.

My wife and children, and my brothers in law and their families owe their lives to the fact that the decision was made not to prevaricate, as do thousands upon thousands of others in similar situations.

Read the history, check the facts and then criticise the decisions, rather than post up some ridiculous crepe about some obscure conspiracy theory. Check the facts yourself, Google Lisbon Maru, his name was Claude Elmy.

I had a grandfather on each side, one British and one Japanese so I can see your perspective. Luckily for me they both survived their respective ordeals. It is worth remembering however that although your father-in-law may owe his life to the decision ‘not to prevaricate’, hundreds of thousands of civilian men, women, and children died in his stead, vapourised, burned, or radiated to death.

Personally, I’d rather never have been born if it meant those bombs hadn’t dropped.

Aren’t the stanchions further apart on maxle forks? 20mm hubs are 110mm wide but QRs are 100mm. If that’s right then 09 lowers won’t fit on the 08 crown.

Got a 180/160 SLX setup with XTR rotors. I think they’re brilliant. They’ve survived a heavy crash too.

Don’t know what they’re on about. Not a faff at all. Quite the opposite. I love mine. Haven’t had to look at them since fitted last September.

As barca points out it seems to be a teeny tiny minority of sellers who have caused problems. I know the names and it wouldn’t stop me buying from others.

I’m by no means a massive poster here, but I’ve just sold my forks via STW to someone who doesn’t know me from adam. £170 via bank transfer based on trust. I (and my ‘customer’ obviously) reckon there are more decent people here than in general, and a bit of common sense and faith in people should see the classifieds continue.

Having said that a rating system couldn’t hurt.

Bloody hell Ironmaiden. I’m glad you came out of that (relatively) ok. The more I look at the photo the worse it gets. Thanks for the explanation though, I was wondering how you’d managed such a spectacular dismount on a flat bit of ground.

Chainsuck is a symptom of worn chainrings, not frame design. Although on a raised single swingarm design like the 5 there’s nothing for the sucked chain to jam against.

Then there’s something wrong with the o-ring (should be replaced at service) or the nut hasn’t been tightened properly.

Was in this situation myself a few years back. Bunch of drunk neds on a bus with their girlfriends. One of them starts talking to a French dude, then as happens when everyone’s drunk a bit of chat turns into a fight. Cue 4 or 5 against 1. Was letting them get on with it until the Frenchie went down and started taking kicks, so I made a decision and stepped in to try and throw him off the bus. It was a bit of a rammy but eventually dragged him off. The bus was about half full of people but despite me asking for help nobody lifted a finger, not even the driver. They had a wee go at me afterwards but nothing too serious. Left me in a raging mood all night though just coz of the apathy.

P.S. I should mention I’m 6foot1, 13 stone, and had a skinhead at the time which may have helped.

You’re not going to get full travel by throwing your weight on the bars (well I can’t anyway and I’m 90kg kitted up). Stick a zip-tie or something round one of the stanchions before your next ride. Maybe do some drops. That’ll give you a good idea.

Yeah I managed to find mention of them in the pike manual. What a PITA trying to install though. Can’t get them seated. Will need to try your 30mm socket method Brown. Until then it stays in bits. :-(

For what you describe I’d take the P7. Some parts of the red are rough but most of it is relatively smooth. Easily manageable on a HT.
