I like cycling up hills on road bikes and down hills on mountain bikes.

Not racing but it’s my local hill. The trails are not far apart. I’d ride them all once if I could. You can just push up 5 and 6 to save the savage fire road climb round.

Stage 4 is a bit of a slog to get to. You could give that a swerve if you want to save some energy. It’s not a trail I ever really ride but from memory it’s pretty narrow, potentially sloppy and relatively straight forward.

The other hill that the first 3 stages are on is a not too bad to go up a few times.

The hill that stages 5 and 6 are on was really badly affected by storm Arwen so there’s been lots of work done there on the trails I believe.

Lots of rocks and roots everywhere.

Can you not just ride the ebikes without the batteries?

Or do they not work that way?

    There is chairlifts there btw.

I’ve carried mine on as hand luggage in a helmet bag and dangling off a rucksack clipped to the bag by the chin strap.

    Never had an issue.

I use Nike Metcons in the gym for lifting and circuit style training etc. I’ve had many pairs over the years. Love them. I used to wear Proper lifting shoes for squatting etc but now don’t bother as the Metcons are so good. I’m sure they’d be fine for spinning as the sole is quite stiff. The toe box is quite wide but I am sure they’d still fit fine in straps – they do in the rower.

I wouldn’t want to run any major distance in them though. They’re deffo not running trainers.

In my experience shoulder armour helps prevent cuts and abrasions, but not so much the separating/ dislocating/spraining etc and bone breaks.

Just hurts more when you do break your collar bone and the medics need to get you out of the armour.

Running will likely be detrimental to cycling ftp and gaining upper body strength.

Periodised training exists for a reason.

What would be your start date if successful? Employers are entitled to 8 weeks notice I believe for maternity leave so that would need to be taken into consideration within the recruitment timeline.

What kind of probationary period does the new role have? Ay risk of pissing new employers off by dropping this on them weeks into a new role? (hopefully not – but with some employers you never know)…

But those innovations became commonplace way before the singletrack forum.

I had suspension forks (marzocchi Zokes) and riser bars (club roost) in like 1996 and I think I got my first hope disc brakes in 1997.

Square taper to hollowtech 2 etc was also a no brainer innovation.

Again all these developments improved technology that was inferior (for actual real mountain biking).

All were games changers. Remember, people on here argue about anything and everything. I was talking about the real world, where everyone I knew or met at races were delighted to ditch cantis, Magura hydraulics, v brakes, square taper cranks and rigid forks.

To go back to the OPs original question…

I really hope that mountain biking doesn’t become motor powered by default.

Do you need gear, suspension, disc brakes

These things make regular mountain bikes perform better and more reliably (typically) but they don’t fundamentally change the way that locomotion occurs.

For me, cycling is people powered but I get that other people don’t agree. I am by no means anti e bike in all circumstances but am surprised how common ebikes are getting with young/ish people even on tame/fairly flat trails.

And I do absolutely see how they can enable more riding/descending to get done in less time. I image an e bike would be very handy during interseason in the Alps when the lifts ain’t on. But as I mentioned previously making access to repeated sessioning of trails easier has potential detrimental impact in some (non trail centre) contexts.

I don’t remember any anger related to mtb suspension or disc brakes when they were introduced. Hydraulic discs were a godsend, even if they were a crock of crap by today’s standards.

I need a dropper on my bike mountain bike. My frame would not allow a traditional post to get the correct leg extension for pedalling and drop it low enough for the type of riding I do.

I also have a dropper on my gravel bike and it is handy but it’s definitely not as vital as it is on a mountain bike.

    That Cannondale looks great value.

And yet they’re doing a roaring trade in Ebikes.

Yes that was my point hence the “LOL” that followed that statement – more ebikes than actual mountain bikes!

Last week I cycled round my local woods on the edge of town and I saw 7 or 8 people (young adults) on e MX style bikes shreading round the trails. Nae good and like you say, to the average person hard to differentiate from a burly enduro ebike

It does also mean that some remote, wild trails in fragile environments that used to take a fair amount of effort to access end up getting ragged to pieces as ebikers rip multiple laps with ease.

I think they’re great enabling technologies for those that really need them but loads of people just don’t.

I feel bad enough now that I have to charge my gears before I ride my bike (a couple time per year). Its just ridiculous in this day and age that loads of people are charging large bike batteries every time they ride their bike.

Back in the 90s/00s my bike used to break pretty much every time I rode it. Now it barely ever goes wrong. Yes when bits do need serviced (suspension) they need sent away or dealt with by a specialist but other than that its all much the same – just more robust.

I have a Cannondale system six with fully integrated aero stem bar combo and there is no noticeable flex. And I weigh 94kgish so it gets a fair workout.

What’s the head angle? Edit: just checked your link. Looks pretty standard for a racing frame – shouldn’t feel sluggish or slow.

What length is your stem? What size is the frame? That’s a lot of seat post exposed and a fair stack of headset spacers…

You would know if there was an issue with the headset as it would be rough and very noticeable with the wheel off the ground.

A couple of questions I would ask:

Are you eating enough? If you’ve dropped you calories drastically this could explain the fatigue and lack of recovery.

Is your diet balanced? Don’t fixate on eliminating particular things but are you generally eating a good balance of healthy carbs, proteins, fats?

    Are you drinking enough water?

Are you sleeping enough? I like an afternoon nap too – nothing wrong with that.

Are you sitting for most of the day at work? This is the number one reason that affects how I feel – since lockdown and constant TEAMS meetings I really feel it in my hips and back etc. Need to consciously get up and move.

How is the mood/mental wellbeing? – this can really affect motivation and perceived energy levels.

As a 40 year old who has had a pretty active life and fallen off lots of bikes and spent a lot of time lifting weights I would say I am always slight sore for one reason or another – either chronic or acute. I am sure the sitting all day doesn’t help.

The increase/change in day-to-day resting heart rate is strange – mine definitely goes up when I am busy/stressed at work and some of the other issues above are out of whack. But it usually normalises pretty quickly too.

Have you spoken to your GP?

Is the bottom headset race fully pressed onto the fork crown. Worth checking, a few mm off May account for accessible gap in the stem.

    I’ve seen it before.

There’s not much of anything in stock – hence the reason the used car market is so strong.

Most brands still have significant lead times – I have heard of people being quoted 12 to 18 months wait for VW and Porsche etc.
