ive got a 2019 scout. its brilliant. Im 5’10 and went for a medium….should’ve sized up but its still great. the 2.6 tyres make it. ploughs though stuff that you wouldn’t expect it go through comfortable. Very nimble and fast. I was looking at second hand (Orange crush), but got the Scot on bike to work so it was cheaper than a decent second hand orange. Get one….youll love it.

My Dad was quite into retro hifi…..and had some older stuff that he never got ride off. just sold his nice B&O 901 amp/ receiver. Also inherited his QUAD 34/FM4/306 system with rack. need to get it rigged up with some decent speakers.

in true STW fashion everyone posts what they have as the best recommendation!! Rather than what the OP is asking about!

the nanopress looks interesting. Is it proper espresso that you get?

I was looking at one of these which get god reviews as a basic but reliable machine. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Swan-SK22110BLN-Espresso-Machine-Pressure/dp/B07KGSF6DJ

with the Etrex can you load routes onto it?

its mainly going to be used for downloaded routes. Would that mean that the routes have been set up to give turn by turn directions? Sorry, don’t know much about GPS devices.

thanks for all the responses (I don’t look on here every day Stevextc!!). the Cujo looks great and good value.
it will be an all rounder with some light mtb duties in places like ashton court, Bristol….with a view to her building confidence and hopefully getting a bit more adventurous in years to come.

take him into the bike shop and let him pick the bike. even if you already have it, try to go to the shop and test out bikes…..only test the one you already have though! maybe get him to choose a bell or something to bling it up. we did this with my daughter and let her choose the bike colour (As long as it was gender neutral colour so her little brother could have the bike after her!!)

plenty of good and not so good shops in Bristol. Bike on the triangle have always been helpful. I use https://bristolbikesmiths.com/ for all servicing. Hes very good and well priced. If you take in your own parts he is happy to use them rather than supply them (at shop inflated prices). I think he does collection / drop off too.

yeah I am thinking it looks good. don’t know whether to go medium or large. Im 5’10 with (I think!!) normal reach / legs. I ride a medium YT Capra….and that seems good.

sat on a medium Scout and it seemed fine. Not sure whether a Large would seem too big.

Epic. Well done….amazing achievement, and a really inspiring film. I think I want to give it a go!!

I lost my driving licence for medical reasons a couple of years back (since had it reinstated)….that in itself can be a kick in the teeth when dealing with a long term condition.

    inspired.

money….there just isn’t enough of it being spent on maintenance. most of the construction and maintenance done here will be the same as anywhere else in the western world (dependant on climatic / environmental conditions)….its just there isn’t enough money dedicated to maintaining things well. and as others have pointed out we live on in a much more densely populated country than most of Europe so our roads have greater flow of traffic and its more difficult (read costly) to close them to maintain them.

big projects (Such as the A14) tend to come out of different pots of money than funding for maintenance. and most of these big projects are maintained well afterwards as they are managed by the trunk road agencies (essentially an arm of central government – that also doesn’t have the same balancing act of spending that a council would).

we didn’t know the name of one of our neighbours for the first few years we moved into our street….he was simply known as ‘car wash’. constantly out tinkering with his little car virtually polishing the paint off! there used to be some Kurdish guys that did a great job, inside and out for about £15. Does make you wonder what money is being laundered through these businesses though.

yeah, tempted to give fiasp a go to see if it works better for me…..but it just means another few weeks / months of adjusting.

How long you been on a pump Sven? do you like it? easy to adjust to? better control?

Sven, how do you find fiasp? Im using novorapid which I find slow and sometimes unpredictable (i.e. same carbs / dose at same time of day / circumstances and different effect on BG). my DSN mentioned Fiasp that might be worth trying …. but when I mentioned this to my consultant she dismissed it as no quicker than novorapid!

Dick, I haven’t used diasend, but I understand that the miao miao device can be used with its associated apps (spike / tomato / xdrip) alongside using libre normally. I would think you would then have to just use diasend as normal.

just found this thread. Been using libre for about 18 months. Has changed the way I manage my T1….not always successfully, but has been really good.

just posted in nother thread (about omnipod) saying that I use a miao miao Bluetooth device to link the libre to my phone so I don’t need to scan it. worth looking at for libre users. the apps can create alarms and predict BG.

will keep an eye on this thread.

Good to see theres other T1s on here! I’m just on pens….but have talked with my DSN about pumps and the omnipod…..not keen but might be a route to go down at some point. I use the libre….which is ok on its own, but I also use a miao miao Bluetooth device that means you can link it to your phone or smart whatch. With this you can then use an app like ‘spike’ or ‘tomato’ to see your BG levels on you smart watch / phone and it gives you alarms to tell you if you are going low / high. this has been a massive help in me avoiding hypos and making the best use of the libre. Don’t know if you have heard of any of these apps or the miao miao device before….but they have genuinely been a massive game changer, on top of the game changer that using the libre was!

I don’t think its that the gabions have failed…..its more that the weight they are holding is overloading the slope. it is one of networks rail’s geotechnical engineers saying this. this is therefore a design issue rather than a failure of a structure or construction material.

they do enforce the 20mph in Bristol through the mobile camera van. Mrs got done on Jacobs Wells Rd recently.

    http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/34851/

not sure how effective it has actually been in improving road safety by any measurable yardstick. I think they spent £2.1m on implementing the 20mph zones across the city and the only evidence is a fairly biased UWE report on its performance, that sings its praises….but only really makes estimates on its effectiveness in reducing casualties. I went to a road safety conference in Bristol a few years ago where the council, mayor, police, highways people, Sustrans etc were all there, and someone did ask if this spend was the best way to spend money to reduce road casualties (a measurable indicator of road safety improvement)…..there wasn’t much of a useful answer from the politicians.  I do like the 20mph zones, and I do think they have brought speeds down, but not by much at all. And if we want to reduce road casualties in our cities this probably isn’t the best way to spend money.

don’t know if they still do shop rides but I used to ride with the guys from Addiktion cycles every week. Lots of good (flat) single-track. good for getting lots of flat miles in….and lots of nice village pubs nearby!

I liked mine….but the best upgrade was a Capra!

………sorry, that was a very STW post!

in all seriousness though. I sold mine for about £700 a couple of years ago. it was in ok condition. Put another £1000 to it and bought a capra. the difference in how much bike shave come was amazing. I would probably do the same rather then spend money on the pitch. You will have more fun on a new (modern / ‘enduro’) bike….especially at uplift days and in the alps.

A building site that drags mud onto a public road is expected to have a road sweeper constantly out cleaning a road to prevent the mud / gravel becoming a skid hazard. I’m not sure a farmer would have the same responsibility (as the construction site would probably be required to do this as part of their temporary traffic management arrangements), however it is their mud and so some degree of responsibility must be theirs.

a homemade sign does will not be a highway standard sign. any actual highway warning sign needs to be the correct design, size, reflectivity and mounting height. If the farmer put a sign out saying there is mud on the road he knew there was a hazard but put out a sign that couldn’t have given the same level of warning as a standard highway sign. This in itself would be a worthy point to put to the insurers to justify why you wouldn’t have adequate warning.

in terms of ‘too fast for a country road’ blah blah that people are saying, I have no idea how fast is too fast for this road….and I’m sure neither do they!!
