Despite all the folk who dislike Ae, I quite like it.

We are up for a few days in a week or so, does anybody know how much of the normal red trail is open on a weekend please ?

You’re right on the attrition for the spectators … used to take the week off and marshal on the Sunday stages and a Yorkshire stage ( with the local motor club – Huddersfield ) and spectate in Wales, Lakes and/or the Borders till the Thursday …. had some cracking times !

Did road and stage rallies in a Chevette HS ( and Firenza before ) in the 80’s and early 90’s. Saw Group B cars and the demise of ‘proper’ road rallies when the likes of Grp 4 Escorts, Ascona 400, TR7 V8 etc appeared in the lanes ( public roads ) in the MN championship. I remember the first sight of Mikkola in the fire breathing Quatro accelerating away in Hamsterly so much quicker than Ari’s Rothmans Escort. Enjoyed the times both competing and marshaling/spectating on the RAC and Manx etc. It just doesn’t seem the same, these days or is that me being old !

59, had to give up squash about 50’ish as knees were causing me a problem. But continued riding bikes, climbing and caving. I’m fortunate that I don’t seem to put on weight – still the same weight and waist size as I was in my 20’s.

If I do anything which uses different muscles, then I notice the following days. I wouldn’t hesitate to try another activity ( surfing still on the bucket list ), and don’t worry about age specifically.

Just get on with it as Whitestone said !

Heading down ‘Long Tongue Scrog Lane’ ( real name ), one appeared out of the bushes, I managed to avoid it, it then turned uphill and continued at full pace towards my mate who was following …. I heard lots of panic braking and skidding … fortunately it turned off into the bushes at the last minute avoiding a collision.

Have seen a few others on night rides locally.

I’m not sure we’ve had 9 months of mud but we’re coming up to 6 months and it’s showing no signs of drying out.

In previous years we’ve generally had spell of drier weather during the winter which has allowed a temporary respite but not this year.

I’m losing the battle to stay motivated this year and can’t be bothered to ride if there’s any rain.

Fantastic to watch …. I went to the Isle of Man several years to watch the rally, in the days of Rothmans Escorts, Asconas, Mantas, DTV Chevettes etc. In those days we had a Chevette HS competing in club road and stage rallies. I may have rose-tinted glasses on but those cars just seemed more exciting to watch than the cars of today !

I was watching the Manx rally when Ari Vatenen totaled the ‘Black Escort’ about a mile further down the road than were we were watching on the Staarvey yump.

    Distance – 2066 miles
    Time – 227 hours
    Elevation – 182,644 feet
    Rides – 78

No commuting, all mountain bike, mostly from home but some rides in Scotland and Yorkshire Dales.

As we normally end up in the pub after 10pm, then a couple of pints and ride home, getting home between 11 and 11:45pm, the last thing I want to do is clean the bike especially when the alarm goes off at 6am …. it will wait till the weekend.

Which is probably after Sundays ride !

How long do we wait for the answers please OP ?

I would have thought as long as you remain off the stage while riding in and if you arrive at a marshaled junction, ensure the marshals know you are there and are not going to ride on the stage, then why not.

I got a GoPro for a Xmas present …. It’s back in it’s box now … I managed to successfully use it once.

Lots of problems with it stopping of it’s own accord and not working again. Found a support thread where lots of people had similar issues. Standard response was a new specific SD Card …

I got fed up with p*ssing about with it on rides – therefore gave it up as a bad job.

Just my experience, so I wouldn’t recommend them.

Good year for me so far …. ( sorry OP ! )

No commuting all MTB from the door, so a mix of roads, tracks, bridleways and footpaths …. 1400 miles in 53 rides, with 124,000ft elevation :)

I realise compared to some who will be along shortly this is low mileage but I enjoy it !

Don’t profess to be a good technical rider so do lots of local miles using roads, bridleways, paths and tracks. 95% plus of my rides are from home, between 20 and 40 plus miles. Once out of town it is surprising how few people you see even on a Sunday. I ride a few trail centres a year on a weekend away but generally begrudge driving for an hour or more to ride when I can go from home.

This weekends ride consisted of canal towpath ( Colne Valley, West Yorkshire ) out then over the Pennines ( bits of Pennine Way ) back into the Calder Valley to get home.

Anyway, one legally proven way of establishing higher rights is to ride a path, openly, without permission or objection from the landowner, for 20 years. This is called presumed dedication of a right of way. If that isn’t legal sanction for riding footpaths, I don’t know what is.

So does that mean we ride footpaths until objected to, then mutter, zeroise the time and start again for another 20 years of trying ?

    :)

I used to ride just bridleways several years ago but then started riding footpaths as well and don’t feel guilty at all. I will avoid certain ones on sunny weekends due to numbers of walkers.
However I slow down for walkers, horses, dogs on both bridleways and footpaths, say hello and only very rarely have any conflict or comments.
The most conflict I have is with a grumpy g*t who lives in a lock keepers cottage on the canal at Brighouse – always complains when he sees me ( or probably any cyclist ) !

It has been noted by the missus when I’m in the pub on an evening ride but as far as I’m aware it hasn’t sent a message yet on a 2 pint stop ( about 45 min ) ….. :)

I’ve still got two of the Parrot windshells, one green and one 90’s purple. The Green one is in the backpack for most rides – the purple one I daren’t wear anymore ! :D

Made far too well, probably why they went out of business ! Just lasted too long.

    CHECK YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS !!!!

I ordered 2 pairs, first email said 1 pairs was picked and packed, 1 pair on back order. £39.99 taken out of account. Then another email saying 2nd pair picked and packed. This morning it looks like they have charged for the 2nd pair again but immediately refunded it !
    £19.99 taken out and £19.99 returned ….
At least I got the Haribo with the first pair, next pair to be delivered today.

50% success rate on my order – 1 pair Humvees on the way (green), 1 pair on back order (grey).

Let’s hope the back order happens !

@Trail_rat – They’re not called ‘soft’ roaders for nothing !

It was only on a 4×4 track in Langdale forest, it no longer exists … on their web-site it said it was suitable for that type of car …. it was rougher than I expected and once committed to the track it wasn’t easy to opt out !

Had three lease cars with a previous employer, had all three cars ‘fixed’ by ChipsAway type companies before handing back and had no issues or comeback.

The last two were ok, the first one however was an X-Trail which I had taken off-road for one day when it was 6 months old.

That day caused lots of damage underneath … including one bent steering arm ( repaired ), flattened sump, numerous dents in the floor plan and rails and a broken front bumper which ChipsAway couldn’t or wouldn’t fix .. I fixed it with lots of filler & fibreglass and a fine coating of dirt on the day of collection. I had a very nervous day when it was collected from home ( I was at work ) – I can only assume they never looked underneath !

The winch meets at Gaping Gill are run at Spring Bank and August Bank by Bradford and Craven pothole clubs respectively. If you can make these dates then the winch is well worth the trip. See the web-sites for more details. Beware it does get busy and you can be waiting to go down and come back up ( where it is wet and cold ! ).

Had one for two and a half years now, one problem with aircon/fan which was fixed on warranty ( Lots of Renaults have the same problem ). No other problems, 2wd 1.5 diesel averages 44 mpg commuting into Leeds at rush hour. Basic – yes but I’m happy enough with it. The intention being to run until it drops, so not so worried about depreciation. I would buy another based on ownership so far.

I was spectating on the Manx Rally that year when the Ari clip was show at the evening highlights in the Rally HQ – there was a collective ‘OHhh’ from the audience !

I was also spectating just down the road the year he totaled the black escort – I saw him seconds before over the Starvey yump landing half on the grass …. he only lasted a few hundred yards further before the crash.

Lots of other options from Mirfield, out on M62 corridor which are some DBW is talking about, Norland Moor way and the Shibden Valley.

Had a Duster 1.5dci ( 2wd ) from new for 2.5 years, apart from an issue with the heater ( which Renaults have as well as it’s sourced from that ) it has run faultlessly.

Averages 43 mpg in a rush hour commute into Leeds.

Performance is fine, previously had a Qashqui 1.5, there’s no difference as the engine is the same.

Handling – well it’s a SUV type of vehicle, so it handles as such, again no different to equivalent vehicles.

Haven’t crash tested it – so can’t comment on that !

    Yes- I would buy another.

Just researching a loop from home ( Mirfield ), out via Castle Hill and Honley up to Wessenden ( on t’moors ), before heading back down to Marsden …. but then can I face the climb back up to Pole Moor …. could be a climb too far in what will probably be a 35-40 mile ride – I’ll see on Sunday !

Thanks to the above – the longer version is definitely not on – we will be travelling from Dumfries on the day and in the middle of November so we would run out of daylight.
Thanks BB – there will be 3 of us doing it, two of us will be fine but one isn’t as fit so we need to consider him !

Hi Weeksy – as you replied on my thread earlier, and the above is relevant – my previous phone was fine and started with the above issues before failing to record anything … hence the new phone in the other thread !

I’ve spoken to both Vodafone ( supplier ) and Sony Support and the best suggestion is a Xperia Software Repair !
This is a new phone, because I had a similar problem with my previous Z1 Compact after using successfully for 2 years.
The routes shown on Strava were slowly looking more and more vague ( zig-zags ) and I thought it was the GPS slowly failing. I was due an upgrade, hence the new phone !

GPS test app is showing No Fix and no accuracy despite being able to see a number ( 23 ) of satellites. Although I have never used this when it’s working so I don’t know what to expect !
