Not I. I like SS, but I don’t like it everywhere.

I think it’d do my nut in on a full sus.

Got a suggested ratio? I normally use 41:16 on a 26″, but then I live in Leicester so it’s not too much of a struggle 🙂

How would this be singlespeed? Idiocy, or are the climbs not *too* steep?

He’s moved out in August has we wanted diff things. And yes we are both on the mortgage.

In which case tell him bollox!

Agree with Mark, can’t see how being vacant would help.

The backstory’s a bit irrelevant to your question, but I hope you have a happy life now that you’ve found yourself.

Wouldn’t you say one of you has to go? Will he also move out? That would seem a little silly as you’ll be paying for a property neither of you will be using, so how to decide who goes?

I split with my GF couple of months ago and continued to live with her for a few weeks – it wasn’t too uncomfortable as we also ended pretty amicably but I couldn’t have been around much longer as the moving on had to start.

Rob, they are all exactly the same car… built in the same factory with different badges put on them. 95% of the parts are interchangeable.

Thought I read somewhere they’re built on the chassis & body, but they have different engines? Again – not my area of expertise 🙂

Quite often the VW dealers are cheaper for parts than Ford.

    That is interesting to hear…

Advice: Galaxy – replacement parts cheaper. This from an absolutely car mad colleague, seemed sensible. Also found the Galaxys (Galaxies?) to be cheaper than the others cos there’s loads of them around.

Also higher mileage newer generally considered to be better than low mileage older with diesels. (Rob is not a car bod!)

I got a 137k 53 plate 1.9 115bph Ghia (get me!) last year for 2.5k and it was in fantastic condition. Looked over a similar, but very ropey interiored one on a forecourt that they wanted 4k for which was seriously OTT.

Felt I got a bit lucky as I just happened to spot the one I bought on someone’s drive after making a wrong turn 🙂 I’d defnly go private sale, look it over very thoroughly and expect to need to spend a bit of money on it afterwards.

Mine’s waaaaaaaay better than the shitty VW Caddy it replaced 🙂

Edit: Turns out there’s a Ford Galaxie also – & I like it!

After I killed my BFe I was pondering the same thing as you; I could do with the same thing, but with a bit of give at the back as a safety-net (for the next time I ****-up  )

Along the way I ruled out the Trans Double (can’t renember why, maybe suspension design?), and decided on either a Spesh SX (not so easy to find) or a Banshee Rampant. Ended up with the Rampant (silly name!) and, while a grand was a serious amount for me to spend on a frame it was the only one that ticked all of the boxes for me.

There are plenty of short travel fun bikes out there, but most, like Blackmarket Killswitch or Kona Bass have concentric BBs which (apparently) don’t pedal so well – something I needed as I was after a do-all type bike.

Mine’s set up for fun times and while it can be a bit of PITA to climb on (it is a bit tiny) works as a good all-rounder. Have done the Dyfi Enduro & blue/red Stiniog very happily on it as well as medium sized jumps/drops. Wouldn’t fancy black DH runs on it as I’d get out of control pretty fast at the kind of speed I want to be descending at.

Good review here by a chappie who frequents STW (and goes a bit bigger than me 🙂 ): http://bb.nsmb.com/showthread.php?p=2584817

And if you want to move it to another bike you’re not limited by how short you’ve cut it.

But it’s how it looks that’s important.

Funnily enough I’ve never seen anyone else wrap the cable, but then most people aren’t nearly as smart as me.

    Takes about 10mins max
    You’re amazing.

I’ve done a couple and first time was probably an hour all in and thirty mins the second time

How stoned were you sarky bloke? Took me 10 mins, cos it’s a piece of piss.

Also didn’t need to cut the cable, and I’ve got a tiny bike – just have it wind round the seatpost so it doesn’t flap about in the down position.

Hardtail but in full suspension form + 100-120mm rear and 140 max front + FoD dh + 26“ + 4x

    = Banshee Rampant?

I know someone who had pretty much the same requirements as you and got one after doing LOTS of research. It was me 🙂

Loads of them will, just decide where you want to go and get in touch with them.

Have been loads to Switchbacks & SB DH on me tod partly for the reasons you state and partly cos my mates aren’t as keen as I am.

I’d be more interested in the one who can get me riding skinnies and big jumps properly

That’s actually you – others can help you along the way, but you’ll be putting the effort it. You might learn a lot in a day, but it’s the practice that comes after that’ll get you to where you want to be.

My favourite part of spinning classes is when the instructor tells you to use the aero-bars to make yourself aerodynamic

Ignoring the instructor and making up your own routine as you go along is also fun

If you enjoy spinning you’re doing it wrong.

I’d agree with all of the above, and add that I find it quite like singlespeeding – you’re never in quite the right gear and you have to really push yourself to get anything out of it.

Great stuff, but the instruction to put it on by the cassette makes no sense to me as, surely, it’ll find its way into the freehub?

Also make sure you wash your hands after use – it’s nasty shit and can really eat your skin.

Have you been coached yourself? I picked up a lot of tips on how to coach while being coached. Obv. this is nothing to do with certificates, but I always value someone who knows what they’re doing over pieces of paper.

    the original SX?

Yep. Was tempted to get it just to stick on the wall if not ride it 🙂

Dunno that it’s an exact match to your description, but Spesh SX (rocking horse poo) and Banshee Rampant (I have one – is much fun) fulfill some of it.

There was both a mint newish SX frame on the bay recently and an older generation one that I was sorely tempted to buy, but I don’t need 2 of pretty much the same bike 🙂

So what do these people who state ‘great for mucking about in the woods’ actually do in the woods to have fun?

    Dogging
