How about a suggestion for a cheap, small camera with decent quality playback (not instant) that could be used as evidence should I get knocked off (again!) and next time the driver isn’t so cooperative?

    Advice:

Learn how to jump with someone who knows what they’re doing.

Don’t go for anything you’re not confident about.

Don’t worry about what bits you’ve got on your bike as they’ll inevitably get trashed in time.

I know of someone who has been in a coma since crashing at Cannock this Summer. Unknown as to whether a braking bump got her, but I think it may have had something to do with the skiddiness on the sandy bits when it got extra dry.

There’s a kind of mini trail centre opened in Fineshade/Wakerley Woods near Corby that’s ok,* but not worth travelling far to get to (and not in Leicester).

If you want know what is good in Leicester – it’s mostly food based :D e.g. http://www.eatatbobbys.com/

*Much less ok than the monkey.

I’ve used a 3 kinds of cable disk brakes and, low & behold, BB7s were the best.

I prefer hydraulics, but find bleeding and setting up the way I like them to be trickier than ye olde cabels.

RM SXC Slayers are v plush & well known for it. The new design are alleged to be better in some respects, but I’m yet to ride one.

they can get shot of me with 24 hours notice

    Depends on your contract, no?
I’ve have contracts that went from a week’s notice either side to a month after 3 months.

    EDIT:

If I take the leap, any tips?

Make yourself very valuable to clients, really know your specialty & at least make it sound like you’re aware of technologies etc. that touch on your speciality.

I’ve done a couple of routes out of the v-graphics book this summer (as I don’t know my way around) & found them to be pretty decent.

    http://www.v-outdoor.co.uk/products/mountain-biking/south-east-mountain-biking—ridgeway-chilterns.php

Very nice area to ride (from Watlington), but reckon it could be a slippy nightmare when that chalk gets wet.

Is down at the mo, but now isn’t the time to be doing the 1,2 & 3 as they’re taking the waymarkers down in order to change the routes. Why they’ve chosen to do it this way and not put up the new routes & then remove the old I don’t know (maybe to avoid confusion).

I didn’t think all that much of them really, nice rides, but the kind of xc you could do almost anywhere in Wales – e.g. nothing like the wonderful climachx* (my view does vary! unrideable bits??)

When I’m in the area I usu do Nant yr Arian or Dyfi Forest.

*Haven’t done it in full for some years, mainly just repeat the descent til I can’t take it any more

I was on DH holiday a couple of years ago where a guy turned up for the day, acted like a cock, said it’d be great to do some jumps cos he hadn’t for years, was told he needed to learn how to jump when told he was really sketchy, but came out with the immortal words…

“I just need to go faster”

Next run he faceplanted – not wearing a full-face helmet!

Very messy it was, broken nose & a few teeth missing.

Im planning on breaking something trying to do doubles at the weekend

    It’s no wonder you ache.

    Speed is your friend.

    Un true.

I’d rather have a horrific bottom out noise from the bike than smack into the back of a double at 20mph!

**** big double if you couldn’t clear it at that speed.

OP v, much like: Donoghue v Stevenson

I nearly ate a blade from a potato chipping machine from a chip shop once – just caught a glimpse of it sticking out of a very fat chip, which thankfully the curry sauce hadn’t covered. I took it back to the shop and they offered me free chips for life, but I wasn’t in the mood for eating anymore so I just gave it back to them.

    Best are these:

    http://www.handstrengtheners.net/1-3407931-B002DHM416-Weider_Adjustable_Heavy_Tension_Hand_Grip

You get used to it pretty quick so being able to increase the tension really helps develop strength – and is good for reducing arm-pump I’ve found.

Who knew there’d be a whole website dedicate to such things?

    As I understand it, fit…

    1) is important as you’re in a fairly fixed position a lot of the time

    2) refers to the whole bike, not just the frame.

All the variables could be a lot of faff & expensive to play with so getting one that near enough fits to begin with makes sense.

And yes, you could have an enormous frame with a piddly stem, but the handling would suffer a smidge.
