It takes 2 minutes to quieten down a hope hub considerably by adding grease into the freewheel…

I did this – kinda accidentally – and really missed the noise!
Then it all seeped out in a few rides 🙂

    Hmmm.. ta for that.

If anything does come of this I’ll be self employed (currently am doing something unrelated) and er… Umbrella or LtdCo. – may well be back with more Qs soon 🙂

Or just go and speak to the accountant whose office is 3 doors down from me 🙂

It is extremely unlikely that any NHS organisation will employ you as a consultant.

This is what I figured. Thanks for the comprehensive replies; time to update my CV 🙂

Record the transaction taking place – at last a decent use for a helmet cam instead of filming boring trail mincing

you wouldn’t want to be stuck in clips look over the edge on lemmings for example!

 (FWIW Lems is my fav)

Clips if you ride clips, flats if you don’t. There’s a fair amount of non-tech climbing so I’d go for clips every time.

Rigid blah, blah bike ALL WRONG! Switchbacks have a “winch & plummet” approach – so a bike you can trundle up a hill, set up for descending is what you’re after. Soft suspension (& lots of travel) with a fastish rebound, thick, fat, thorn-proof tyres and brakes as above will see you right.

And any other pointers would be great!

Don’t get drunk with Mike  Seriously. He’ll be on a bike the next day and you’ll be ill.

It’s not really relevant to the type of riding I like to do

How would you know? MTB coaching totally changed the way I rode my delivery bike when I was a postman – for the better I might add

I also ride other bikes & the techniques are very transferable.

**** Cannock if you live in Telford!

There must be something close to home worth riding.

    Hmmmm… maybe, I dunno?

    The Wrekin?
    The whole of Shropshire?
    Wales?

    Line?

    Please elaborate.

Certainly; I knew this one would get picked up on 🙂

    It’s regarding calling a track/trail/path etc. a “line”.

I’m familiar with the term “racing line” and the concept of A & B lines in DH racing, however I find a comment such as…

Old School is my favourite line here

    (when riding at Ribbesford)*

…to be MBUKtastic and worthy of nothing but derision

*This is a true story, no names were changed to protect anyone.

I’m also thinking of reviving the word “skill”.

The riding round there is fantastico IMO, have been many times with one of the companies based a bit higher up the hill.

Some of the guys who turned up for our midweek Ae day (through S.DH forum) said they’re up for more midweek days – if you need I can put you in touch with them.

Think Hamsterley will do any day you want and only needs (IIRC) 4 riders to run it. There was a website, but it seems to have vanished…

Just curious, had these people ever ridden a mountain bike?

They were defnly lazy **** who smoked a lot of herb

They didn’t think it had any flow (ala GT blue) – I could have given them my tirade about how flow comes from within and what you find on the trail is only what you bring to it, but I though it would have been wasted – much like them 🙂

Apparently their feet kept getting knocked off the pedals cos they were on hardtails with flat pedals. I was to be ok though cos I had the right bike for it.

That’s right, I was on a hardtail. With flat pedals.

Spoilt by trail centres these kids!

    so whats the answer then?

It’s not the pedals – learn to ride.

Try flats if you want. They won’t get you over what you can’t get over now, though.

I use both and defnly apply better technique with flats for jumps/drops; for anything pedally I favour clips.

I “discovered” Inners red a couple of weeks ago – **** loved it! Was unsure whether to bother cos others had said it wasn’t much good, but had to find out for myself. Found it to be a bit more like “mountain biking” than GT.

    You might also love it.

    Or not.

    P.S.
I also loved riding GT, but I love riding anywhere 🙂

lack of balls / lack of skill

    The pedals won’t change this.

are there any decent pedals with spd one side flats the other?

    Nope.

What someone needs to invent is spds that can be retracted at the flip of a switch when you kow your going to need the ability to dab a foot down on techy bits or tight singletrack with drops off to one side

What someone needs is to learn how to ride techy bits 🙂
Do you unclip when you see something ahead you don’t like? This is very bad practice.

No experience of your speciifics, but I’m using a rim strip on an EX729 with a 2.35 LUST High Roller (these go on v. easily I’ve found).

Works marvellously – inflated straight away with a track pump and no washing up liquid.

My guess is you won’t have much trouble setting it up.

    May/may not have any relevance:

I’ve been riding a BFe for a while with forks at 130mm; any time I’ve tried having them at 160mm it handles like a bag of spanners unless I really lean towards the front – which I find a little unnerving for corners 🙂

Having them at 130mm means I can stay centered on the bike and it’s nice and stable.

Don’t know if it’s in effect yet, but there are major works in the area (gas pipe laying apparently) that will have some roads closed in daytime hours.

Sadly I don’t know how to find out which roads when.

    Ooops! In which case I don’t 🙂
    Wasn’t paying attention!

Pretty expensive aren’t they? Cheapo weights would do for many of the same exercises – although I wouldn’t fancy throwing and catching them

Again, unnecessary – there’s loads of core exercises you can do with no equipment.

I won a week’s riding with Switchbacks DH erlier in the year, based on past performance I’ll be struggling mightily by the end of day 4 🙂

That reminds me, I must book some flights…

Why does the pedal come undone???

Drive-side has anti-clockwise thread to prevent the pedal loosening, swap it to NDS and pedalling unwinds the pedal from the crank.

DMR V12s (or 8s, or copies), FiveTen shoes, be prepared to loose all the ability you thought you had on the bike. 2/3 weeks it’ll be much better and every ride you can be smug that you’re not cheating.

Pretty much my experience; aside from the sumgness, of course 🙂
I’m now comfy switching between the 2 dependant on what I’m riding/what I feel like using. I defnly apply technique better for jumps/drops with flats though as a bit of clipped-in laziness always finds it’s way in there.

EDIT: In that video ^ FB states it’s a compromise. Seems a bit silly as it appears to limit the pedalling advantage that clips give.

    the duff wall comment

What a ridiculous thing to say

True story! I really am in this position.

For those who don’t like my story/don’t relate well to analogies I have a session with Tony booked for October.

I’ve not really gone in for joining in with the online Jedi-love-in, but I’ve had 2 sessions with Tony thus far and the 2nd was even more of any eye-opener than the 1st.

    OP it’s worth the wait

    jambalaya – Member

@neil853 There are other people offering courses in the South East, however having visited UK Bike Skills I wouldn’t recommend anyone else.

Amen brother! If there’s 2 people in the country as good at coaching as Tony is I’d be surprised. If there’s anyone better then I want to know where to sign up.

@chayle – aside from Jedi’s approach to coaching his facility is outstanding.

    This is also true.

you mean to tell me there are no other good/professional/worth while skills course providors in the SE

I mean to tell you there are shysters in every industry, some of them don’t even know it. They might think they are offering a good service, but if they don’t know how good some people in their industry are, they might not realise they’re shit at what they do.
