I am afraid if you have a hankering for a TVR then a Porsche Boxster really isn’t going to be a suitable replacement. Laaaaaame….. 😉

The problem with building up a cheaper road bike from parts is that the components can be very expensive, even second hand. STI levers, even 105/Tiagra are very expensive even second hand. Once you’ve added it all up it’ll probably be better to get a discounted full bike from Spesh/Trek which will have the womens/youths bits already on it. Womens saddles seem to be pricey and don’t come up 2nd hand regularly either.

Thanks all for the tips and support. I’m going to look into local classes and see what there is.

It’s easy to say get over it when you don’t have the fear yourself. I am still really scared of needles but I am a little better after changing to a sympathetic doctor and dentist. There’s a lot in the method you use to stick the needle in to make sure its less painful which helps a lot.
I had a blood test done when I was young and the doctor stuck the needle in my arms so many times. It was so painful and I have the fear since that day.
My current dentist is ace when it comes to injections. I hardly fear them now. Blood tests I haven’t had done in a long time so we will see about those but last time, about 15yrs ago my wife had to come along with me for support as I was terrified.

At least I can jump a bike unlike a lot of wusses on here. 😉

I am in Huddersfield BTW, but work in Leeds with flexi time so could finish early and go to somewhere in south Leeds or along M62 corridor.

Some really encouraging comments there, thanks. You think you are the only person who can’t swim but it seems there are more than you imagine!

I like the idea of one to one training.

My wife can’t help me as she’s not a great teacher having not much patience and more importantly I want to surprise her.

Weird thing is, I am actually buying a dropper post soon. Can’t see the point in replacing a drivetrain that works perfectly though.

People always give reasons why NOT to buy stuff you really want when you ask for advice like this. The problem with this sort of “want” is that it will always be there. If you decide on the van every time you see a TVR you’ll wonder what it will be like to own one. You probably won’t get it the other way round.

Buying things like this isn’t based on any practical need. Reliability and image and all that doesn’t come into it with the “want”. Ok, go into it with eyes wide open – join a TVR club, get all the info you need, do research etc etc to get a good one.

Even if, after 6 months, you sell it again, you’ll still have the experience of owning what you always wanted. If you’ve got the disposable income to spare then there really isn’t any downsides….

Every time I see a TVR I want one. Someone on my daily commute has a Cerbera and I wind the windows down EVERY TIME to hear that glorious sound.

My friend is based in Huddersfield if that makes any difference.

    He is a freelancer.

I reckon its money well spent if you are going to be spending tens of thousands on remodelling.

One of my best friends is a computer animator specialising in animations of new builds, renovations etc. He used to work for an architect so that’s why he went down that path.

One of his recent jobs was this: http://www.hud.ac.uk/about/campus-life/learning-and-leisure-centre/gallery/

There is a link to a fly-through video he did on that page too.

I assume cost will depend on how realistic you want the finished product to look like.

If you want his contact details email me on rcatkinATgmailDOTcom

Definately get Swiss Stop pads – well worth the expense and your braking will be miles better.

Does the frame have gyro tabs on it? (Cable stops to mount lower gyro cable)

Exposure flash and flare – very bright, super light, easy to fit. Haven’t budged a mm on my on or off road bikes. And they come in a nice case too to store the charger and gubbins in.

Was funny putting it on just after installing my new 203mm SLX brakes.

    That is the stronger spring.

They actually work very very well. I’ve used them on my retro bikes and they make the drivetrain pretty much silent.

Sell it on Retrobike to someone who will restore it. Lovely bikes and deserve to be looked after and ridden.

If the owners didn’t want them to be crashed they wouldn’t drive them (or let someone else do it which is common).

For every classic car owner who keeps their car in an air conditioned safe box there are 10 who drive them, and several of them will be thrashing the wheels off them.

Cars like to be used and thankfully people do that to expensive ones! I am sure if Ayrton was around he’d be the first to jump on and car and bury the throttle. 🙂

… and new cables? Did you install a new cable when front shifter was in the centre ring position?

Have you installed a new BB and is it square taper?

I restored a 91 Rocky Mountain and I had the exact same problem, turned out the BB axle was 3mm too short.

New SLX. Just bought some and they are amazing. Spectacularly easy to fit, look good and work amazingly. Can’t see why anyone pays more.

Specialized Vita – my wife has one and she loves it. There’s a few on eBay at the moment. Won’t need to change anything on it to make it comfortable.

You all keep saying use Cat5 cable, but I can’t find a Cat5 port on my iPhone. 😆 🙄

I need the extension to my bedroom so I can connect my iPhone or other devices like that to the wireless network. Devices I can’t connect a Cat5 cable to.

I want to do this too but I am not very technical with these sorts of things. Can anyone link me to a product I can buy that will do the job? I don’t really know what I’m looking for.

I have a virgin superhub which is great but won’t reach to my bedroom as its in the lounge and my bedroom is in the far corner of the house. For various reasons I can’t move the router. I could run a Cat5 cable from the superhub upstairs though. Would that help?

A quote from a Retrobike member on a recent thread about Yodel on there. Makes me laugh every time I read it:

“DO NOT, EVER, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, USE YODEL

They are the single most inept, incapable, shower of sh*t excuse of a courier company I have ever had the misfortune to use.

Unless, of course, you count “good service” as physically running over a bike and then taping it all back up in the hope I won’t know, and then REFUSING to pay me a penny in compensation because I couldn’t prove it was them who ran it over…

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. You would have more luck putting your bike in a Trebuchet and launching it in the general direction of where you want it to end up. I would bet on it arriving quicker and in better condition than if you let the Yodel circus anywhere near it.”

DO NOT ACCEPT PAYMENT BY PAYPAL IF HE’S COLLECTING.

Only option is for him/her to pay Paypal gift, just give him your email address OR he pays cash. If he pays by regular PayPal and collects he could later say he never received the item. As you’ll have no proof of delivery you’ll lose your item and money.

The corner bits where they slot together already look a bit bent – could you redo it with the slits nearer the centre of each board? Might be stronger

    Bump for any other ideas?

I would like to go on a bike ride at some point. We won’t be bringing our own bike, maybe just some clothing. So we will need to rent/borrow some bikes. The main problem with this is that my wife is only 4’11” and rides a 12.5″ GT and an XS Specialized Vita. Even 14″ bikes can be too large. But kids bikes are too small.

Obviously any ideas on routes, places to go would be great. I have the feeling that my wife would prefer road riding but reasonably easy off road would be great if its worth it. She can ride a red route at most trail centres only getting off for the really tough bits so she can handle a bike but I’d rather not risk injury to her so far from home.

Well I’m glad the nasty man had a nice day on his push bike after shouting at another human being like they were dog excrement on his shoe.
I’m glad I’m out of the service industries now. Putting up with selfish, foul-mouthed, ignorant little twerps like you for 12 years who think they can behave how they like just because they have handed me a few coins.

What you don’t realise is that every person who acts like you will ALWAYS be treated like crap once they reach the tantrum stage like you did. The staff will make it look like they are doing everything for you, and make sure that they, on the surface, play by the company rules, but will make sure your experience from then on is as miserable as they can make it. Treat someone like dirt and expect it back.

I’ve seen my staff in tears, drinking heavily, quitting their jobs because of the way some people treat customer service staff.

If you’d have come in my airport acting like that I’d have called the police, and you certainly would not have been flying off to your little cycling holiday.

    +1

If you’re fit enough to ride a SS in north Wales you’ll get on ok in the Dark Peak. Might be some pushing involved but I reckon you’d be fine.

Suspension? Pah. You don’t need it. Yes if you have it its great but don’t let it put you off. I rode it 24 years ago on a fully rigid bike and had loads of fun, and the Retrobike guys do a yearly ride there (part of national series) mostly on rigid bikes and its perfectly ok. Sometimes it’s the routes you choose – you can go for smoother trails or challenge yourself with the beast or Cavedale and see if you can pick a way down and don’t dab!

Me on my 1992 GT Tequesta coming down from Hollins Cross:

    On this bike:

    Loads of fun!

Wheels would be nice powdercoated gloss black or dark grey. I like those cars, easily the best looking MPV type car.

If you are using an Avid brake it may be expected a 185mm disc but if you’ve fitted a 180 that might explain the problem. But it would only be about 2.5mm out, might be enough for it not to work well.

Avid discs are 185 I think, is that what you have?
