I think most people are so used to a huge camelbak they automatically put it on for every ride. For 2/3 hour rides I use a bottle in a cage and the rest of my kit in a back pocket, with the pump on the supplied mount under the bottle cage. Ok it can get a bit dirty but the freedom of not having a massive weight on my back is easily worth it, especially in summer!

A friend of mine did the animation videos for that HeatShot device and its a very nicely made bit of kit. It’s very useful for the summer as hotter water is much better for getting bugs off the screen. I’ll ask him how good it is. They aren’t cheap though.

If I were Harvester I would a) fire the manager for gross misconduct – bringing the company into disrepute maybe? And b) offer her and her immediate family a meal every week free for 10 years or something.

If I were a manager at the time I would have chucked anyone out who complained about the poor lass. Not the other way round!

In Huddersfield there’s a guy who shops with his son, who can walk around ok but is obviously severely mentally disabled and I am guessing he has chosen to look after his son himself as I used to see him a lot in town. His son can make some truly loud and disturbing noise (not all the time) – I can’t see how anyone can complain about it though, always makes me smile and hope I would do the same as his dad in that same situation and not try and hide him away from the world which must be the easier option.

I didn’t bother going as the organisers never got back to me about the suitability of the stuff I wanted to sell – too far a journey to chance it.

Most of the stuff I have is lower value but decent stuff, the kinda stuff that is a pain to list on ebay for the amount it’d sell for.

I have ridden one of Geoffs bikes and I can tell you it goes uphill like nothing else, it’s just weird how much grip and stability there is, it’s awesome. I thought it was a bit weird downhill and so I didn’t rate it for that………..until Geoff passed me, 35 years my senior, on a rocky rooty slippery muddy downhill like I was standing still. And I’m pretty good downhill too.

I bought a huge chicken tandoori baguette, 2 Belgian buns, a very nice sausage and bacon bap with proper HP on it AND a very tasty latte for £5 this morning from Greggs.

    Bargain!

Needless to say I have already eaten the bacon and sausage bap AND BOTH Belgian buns and i am thinking how I can make my face less sticky from all the icing that was on the buns, but I’m in an office and I don’t want to make it obvious. 😉

I’d stock Specialized. Well respected brand, good back up, great range of bikes, good accessories and finishing kit for add on sales.

But then I’d want a shop that would be profitable and appeal to the general public, not just niche beardy brands and boutique cack.

My brother (peterpoddy on here) has just bought one and went for the 52cm rather than the 54cm he would normally. I’ll point him to this thread.

I’m up for doing it now. I think I’d like something with a widish single door, a pent roof (for ease of construction), and maybe up to 5x3m to stay within planning. As far as windows go I can probably make my own now, done it before! I have a local glass company who can make any double glazing window pane in any size and thickness, can do obscure glass too (very useful for security!) very cheaply – was only £12 for my last pane which was about 90x50cm.

If I budget a decent amount of money for it it should be ok, I’d like to use recycled but new timber is obviously going to be more uniform and easier to build with.

I rode BMX in the mid 90’s when it was effectively dead. There were a few local competitions around the world which attracted the best riders but the prize money was effectively zero, maybe a few quid and a t-shirt, even for internationally known riders and the best in the world. That didn’t stop the riders going for every gap, every jump and every trick they could think of.
Street riding was a huge part of it and some stuff was incredibly dangerous for no reward bar a few seconds on a video. Riders made their own parts as there wasn’t reallt the big companies around with the R&D cash to improve things. I remember a group of us started making our own stainless steel pegs as the ones we could buy were rubbish.
I used to ride with Jamie Bestwick when he was still an electrician (IIRC) and he used to drive from Derby to Wakefield 2 or 3 times a week to ride the vert ramp at the Wakefield skatepark, one of only a handful in the country (was barely any skateparks anyway!). He said he couldn’t take too many risks as he couldn’t afford to miss work the next day.

People did it cos it was fun, exciting, a big rush and very rewarding. Never for the money. These riders don’t practice for a few weeks and earn mega bucks, they’ve been riding for years non-stop, taking risks when there wasn’t a monetary reward at all. The money is a great help now as it means they can spend more time doing what they love rather than needing a normal job and they won’t lose out too much if they are injured for a while. Yes there are occasions when people are seriously injured or have died but if we all stopped doing things because of a small risk of something serious happening we’d never get out of bed.

Old light and reflector brackets are SO useful, I have a box of them and they’ve come in handy so many times. I have a good stock of different lengths of stainless M5 bolts I got from a local bolt stockists. Always keep the alloy washers from old v-brake pads, they are very useful and the concave/convex ones can be used as good looking alloy spacers (no rust for me!). Rack stays can be very useful so keep them handy, they can normally be bent all sorts of ways to sort out mountings for new kit.

Basically any small piece of metal or plastic keep it! You can make all sorts…

I’m not wanting anything from the place, just selling my own stuff! Want to know whether its worth bringing a car load of stuff from Huddersfield really.

Gunz – my thoughts exactly. I would be keen on buying a good quality sliding mitre as I am reasonably confident with mitres using a block and tenon saw but it is a PAIN IN THE BUM. My dad taught me to buy quality stuff so if I get a decent one I can use it for other projects later on.

Nail guns – I probably wouldn’t buy one, maybe rent. However I prefer screws so would probably screw together most of it where possible.

It’s all guesswork at the moment anyway, it will depend on how much spare room the new house has outside. It may already have a concrete base I can use which may dictate the size I can build, or I might have to make my own, or maybe concrete posts in and suspend it off the floor a little rather than a concrete base.

DaRC_L – love the pallet shed idea, certainly would save a lot of money for the basic structure. Doubt it go down well with the new neighbours initially – looks shoddy to start off with!

    Grease nipple ordered! £3.70 for 10. 🙂

Just need a grease gun now. Hmmmm.

I reckon if shimano had put grease ports in its hubs many years ago we may never have seen cartridge bearing hubs. Only reason for cartridge is laziness in manufacturing and home maintenance (even though a service on cup and cone is actually quicker in my experience).

I’d rather have a Boardman than an On-One, and I’ve had 3 On-One/PX bikes. Better customer service at Halfords too. Great looking bikes with great specs and not heard any moans about the way they ride. I’d be proud to ride one.

What sort of insulation is best to use? I am guessing the thickness of the wall timbers determines how think the insulation would be – but is an air gap needed at all?

I’d like some insulation as I could put a small heater in and the heat would hopefully not be lost immediately.

One thing I need to do is find a decent wood supplier. Should be plenty round here.

I think one of the problems is that I don’t have confidence in my own abilities. I’ve made a few things including recently a double glazed wooden window (quite proud of that!) but haven’t done a big project yet. I like to know that I CAN do something before I start and know all the techniques and pitfalls.

Andybrad – that’s my worry. I don’t want to spend a lot on materials and find myself out of my depth and either find it wasted or try to fine someone to finish it which may be more than I can afford.

Stoner – nice one, thanks. How do the uprights fix to the baseplate? This is the sort of detail I am struggling to find out online but it is important when making the whole thing solid and long lasting.

I could do with making a plan but that’d have to wait until I bought the house…..

I am guessing the permitted development limits are 15m2 for a wood shed and 30m2 for a brick/stone/block construction. Problem is 5x3m isn’t that big, is it?

I suppose I need to measure my current cellar and figure out what I really need.

What do you mean by floor plate? Is is a timber length just bolted into the concrete? And where does the DPM go, between the wood and concrete I assume?

Stoner – love the brick dwarf wall on yours, looks excellent. Would something like that be doable to a DIY person?

Precast concrete panels. Make it any size you want, they come with different finishes, it’s secure and there are several companies over the UK that provide & erect them

I know what you’re saying, but they are very ugly. I’d rather spend more and get stone/brick/wood built to be honest. The concrete ones don’t seem to have windows and once they are up you can’t change them.

If it is a business burning their waste then report to Environment Agency as soon as possible.

The only waste your are allowed to burn as a business is virgin wood which has been produced from clearing bushes/trees on the same site they were chopped down. Any more would require a licence but you’d never get a licence for the sort of activity you are describing. They are just doing it to save money or just laziness.

I’ve had more fun with people on “unsuitable”, old, knackered or downright weird bikes than folk on the latest machines or trendy wheel sizes/bar widths/nichomatic frames.

Load of rubbish. If they are metal spokes they can be re-used many times over unless they are damaged in some way.

Do people seriously send their kids to a nursery for that long each day, and they have breakfast and lunch there too?

Why not just send to boarding school and really get rid of that awful burden you have. 🙄

Proper annoying as they come up on an iPhone but the “x” to get rid of it is mega small and you can’t seem to zoom in on it effectively.
