Ordered pedals, just need some gear cable and wait for my grips to arrive then I can finish building it up.

Not going to buy the lights yet, don’t need them straight away.

It’s not a light bike but I don’t think its too bad. Certainly is very good looking, the finish on the paintwork is lovely.

I’d rather sell a £1k frame on here for £800 than £1000 on ebay, which is just a minefield of problems with high value stuff.

Shouldn’t be a limit on any account when it comes to paying for something.

Easy to see what might happen. Only one of those 3 payments can be linked to the sale of the frame I think – via an invoice direct from ebay. Imagine the other two are done by goods payment.

You send the frame off. Tracking to some countries is very dodgy, I’m not sure about Russia but it isn’t one I would normally trust.

So he gets the frame, and he makes a claim that it’s damaged/not received. You defend it with the info you have, but you can only really do that on the payment linked to the sale, say £500. If you win you get to keep £500 but I bet the other two are claimed on and you won’t win as you have already won a claim based on the data you supplied. I could see you wining the first one maybe, but not the other two. So you are £840 down as a minimum.

Seller can claim damage as well, how is that going to be sorted out? You’re not going to have it sent back for £240 so you’ll lose out massively in some way.

Cancel the sale, even if you have to take the hit on the final value fee (which you shouldn’t as you specified UK only sale – did you do this the right way on the listing or just write it in the description? Either is fine but it’s odd how a Russian buyer saw it if you listed it properly as UK only) it’s money well spent.

I have a basic cinema system with proper sized speakers – love it!

A friend has a mahoosive HD projector system (I asked him how much it cost – as much as a family car was the answer) with £8k worth of Monitor Audio floor standing fronts and rears and matching centre, with a monster sub (as big as a small dryer). Beautifully set up and amazing to watch a film on. I’ve never been to a cinema which even comes close to how good it is. A lot of money for sure but it is just “wow!”

You look better than me – no matter how I fiddled with the photo I still appear to have oddly yellow skin!

I’ll do a proper photo shoot when I’ve finished building it. I’m waiting for parts to shorten one brake hose (missing from packet) and some pedals – ordered some DMR V8 magnesium pedals. Also need some gear cable. I’ve taken the front rack off for the moment as it weighs a ton and I won’t need it straight away.

Drops or flats? I have my road bike with drop bars which is ok but I toured last year with flat bars and found it very comfy with bar ends added. I have a bad neck which isn’t that compatible with drop bar positions.

Nice upright position to see the lovely countryside as I pootle along. It also means I could for hydro discs cheaply too.

Just sold all the controls and brakes now so might have enough cash for the lights/USB charger now.

Ton – If I come to Leeds on it I will pop round to your work.

Sorry wrong pic above of the levers. Here they are.

    Details……

Triple bottle bosses but also the downtube one has 3 bolts. I’m not sure why but I’m sure there’s something I can buy to bolt here…. 😉

Nice headtube cable stops. Why all bikes aren’t like this I don’t know.

Spoke holder. Peterpoddy sorted me out with some spare spokes for the new wheels but the bike actually came with the right spokes as spares already mounted. Nice touch.

Propstand mount – I’ll be buying one soon. So useful when you have a laden bike.

The brakes I am using Deore Trekking brakes. They have longer levers and a neater look IMHO. There really is no reason to spend more.

Nice rear mount for the brake.

For me, this is the Genesis for ages that seems to be properly focused and good value for money.

I like how the hidden details are decent quality. The wheels on this bike could so easily be m475 hubs (or worse) and most people wouldn’t notice. However they have specced Deore hubs front and back which are really well sealed and will last ages. The freehub is way better too. I suppose they could have put on a Deore mech instead but that’s easy and cheap to change, hubs aren’t.

Winston – there’s not many off the peg bikes that have internal Dynamo routing! You could maybe enlarge the hole a bit but it’s not something I want to do with a new bike. I’ll get some guides to take the wire up the inside of the fork leg.

The odd thing is that no-one is talking about this bike online. No idea why, but this could be the only owners thread on the Internet!!

Winston – nice idea – I’ve been to look and the only hole near the dropout is absolutely tiny. Don’t think I could get a pair of wires through it.

Apparantley MOT stations are looking about for those Hid conversions now and you stand a good chance of failing the MOT with them.

    What, you shot one? Why?

I used to live in countryside which was very very dark. 50-60mph roads feel a lot safer when you can see into the far distance and driving lights were common.

I now live in W Yorks and there aren’t many dark roads. However we went to Snowdonia recently in the winter and had to drive back to the cottage in the dark. Even though I have a brand new car with modern lights there were still gaps in the light output and they didn’t reach as far as I needed really. I wasn’t going anywhere near the speed limit but I would have been happier and more relaxed with driving lights.

If I lived back in the countryside it’s one of the first things I’d fit to a car. Why not make things a bit safer for yourself?

A local frame builder could probably align it better for you, might be worth asking if the original shop can’t help.

Just picked up a Catlike Leaf helmet from the Huddersfield store for £20! The guy in there recognised me as a regular and let me know about them, brought them from the warehouse.

I haven’t bought any of the original OP’s lock. If anyone is prepared to go to keighley there is one reserved there and I can email you the details if you want to pop over – I didn’t go there today as I ran out of time.

It looks like a bit of a poxy small rotor. What size is it?

All locks can be cut in seconds. Some take more seconds than others but if they want your bike and they are a pro they’ll have it.

And I’m going to the Dewsbury and Hudds stores today too. 😀

There’s a load of Knog stuff going cheap too from £1

Although don’t try looking anywhere near Huddersfield for them. 😉

I am buying a bike very soon with a set of TRP Spyre-C brakes on – I am replacing them with something else so if you are interested let me know. They will be off a brand new bike.

My wife and I have had pretty much every iphone since the 3. I would say if you have a 4S now the jump to a 5 isn’t great. You get a couple of extra features in the OS and obviously the bugget screen but the speed of the phone is similar. If you want to see more of a difference I would go straight to a 5S and you’ll get it a lot more future proofed.

If your 4 is running ok I would probably keep it though. They are nice little phones.

o have it at the back of my mind to fit a bluetooth set to my perfectly underwhelming 10 year old family car

The 3 doctors surgeries I’ve attended over the years have all had new BMW/Jags/RR’s type cars parked in be doctors reserved spots, at the very least a brand new Passat IIRC so not sure what’s going wrong there….. And that’s only Huddersfield.

converting an old butted chromo Raleigh MTB to full XT with some road tyres

Any of the above suggestions will probably be better than your converted bike IMHO.

If I were you I’d stick with Deore kit, it works as well as XT, is significantly cheaper and not as much of a magnet for thieves.

I think I’m going to want one of these dynamo setups for my MTB one day, as well as my touring bike.

My bro (peterpoddy) just sent me this picture of the Exposure hub he is building up for me, compared with a Shimano M525 disc hub – can’t believe it’s smaller!! he has weighed it at 180g more than the Shimano hub.

robdob » this explosion in interest in gravel bikes

    Chinny reckon

Yeah I know – I don’t think the gravel bike thing is relevant in the UK as we don’t have the huge network of gravel roads as they do in the USA. But I wanted to put a cool new term in to make me sound up to date. 😉

I don’t get this need for taking kids to far-flung expensive places for holidays. I didn’t go abroad for a holiday ever with my parents and not myself until I was 36. I’m no different to anyone else because of it.

Making the excuse that it’s good for their cultural development (or whatever) and experience of the world is just a cover for the fact that the parent can’t ever imagine not having their fancy holiday. Makes no difference to a primary school age child where you go.

On a tour last year we did a bit of mild off road, slightly rougher tracks. My panniers have a fitting like a Ortlieb pannier, locking top bits with a stabilising hook lower down. I found that they bounced around a bit despite being set up as rigid as I could get them. My wife had some Axiom panniers borrowed from a friend – they were amazing – they had a strong bungee cord attached to a hook for the lower mount. You hook this bit on and pull the pannier up to hook the top bits on. My word they were rock solid, absolutely faultless. There is a US pannier maker who uses the same system.

I think bikeradar tested the Axiom panniers and found faults with them but Axiom responded strongly as they were “potential” faults they thought might happen based on nothing really. I’m certainly going to buy some to replace my panniers as I thought they were great and will be happy using them off road.

I know it’s expensive getting a new battery put in by Apple but I’m going to do it. I’m at the end of my 2yr contract with my 5 and it still works brilliantly but the battery has had it. I can go to sim only contract which will save me £25 a month so £60 will be saved very quickly. The resale value will be better too if I decide to go for a 6 later on as I’ve had it changed by Apple. And I know I’ll get a proper battery and no chance of me breaking my phone changing it. (I have previous for this despite generally being good at these things!)

Saddle 3 continued. (All the pics make the leather look pink – it’s actually a nice rich red but I couldn’t get the camera to get the colour right!)

    Gluing time!

This bit is a pain in the butt. You never know how it’s going to go…..

I ironed the leather carefully on the back of it to make it smooth.

    Everything ready to go

Next job is cover the leather and the seat in contact adhesive and let it dry.

This took a few minutes to get right, smearing it round both items with a plastic card.
As you might know it does smell strongly this glue so I was soon pretty wasted.

Put the saddle on the leather and start smoothing it out by hand from the centre groove outwards.

This bit was the hardest. Fast work with scissors and glue got it sorted. However it was more difficult than the last saddle I did as the leather is slightly thicker and not as stretchy. So it was very hard round the tight curves.

    Back end was easier.

    Front end turned out ok.

Plastic bumpers were a bit scuffed so I sanded them and used a bit of wet and dry on them. Didn’t work brilliantly but it is better now.

    (Before shot!)

    Bumpers back on and voila!!
