Depending on chainstay length, even a half link does not guarantee adequate tension.

Exactly, I took another link out and the chain was too tight and wouldnt go on.

Sorry my eyes are bad, your right its a 32t. Didnt look right well did i.

Its not like you’re going to get any chainsuck though, so a miss is as good as mile.

But if hes going to run a 40t chainring (Rocket’s is a 38t) it would rub on that frame of Rocket’s.

thats a thing to think about, mounting it on the internal may cause it to sit really close the the frame, like the one above.

Make sure you dont double post anything, its a waste of his dial up connection.
Or is he downloading illegally and therefore every little ounce of bandwidth he can get is being used.

Are the Gusset Bachelor tensioners OK to push up?

I went out to test the new chainline, made it worce IMHO. So I’ve ordered a half link, and I’m going to get a fixed chain tensioner. Job sorted.

I moved the cog over a spacer to centre the chainline a bit more.
You all seem sure on the not enough wrap problem but

They are run with about the same amount of chain wrap by people on here, with probably no issues?

    YorkshireRipper wheres that first photo?

Your front ring is probably about 48mm from centre depending on your BB and crank (check this). This means that your rear cog should be around 17 or 18mm from the dropout (and check this). To me it looks more, but I may be wrong.

yes its 48mm on the front, I did all that working out when I bought that crank because it was one of the only ones that runs on a 113mm Octalink BB, so it wants to be 17 or 18mm from the drop out?

    Going on the http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html
article, it should be 19.5mm from the drop out I think. Rear chain line minus front chain line gives me 19.5mm.

The skinny sprocket probably isn’t helping. Ideally you want nothing to move. I’d recommend 3/32 chain, 3/32 Surly sprockets. 1/8th is overkill and does have its own issues.

    it is a 3/32 chain on a 3/32 sprocket.

I’m really actually confused why I cant manage to get a link out of the chain because it looks like there’s loads of it :S
Maybe there isn’t loads of it, it a trick of the mind?

9 speed chain ontoop of what you mentioned

    R.lepecha

    right so fixed tensioner needed.

    R.lepecha

Its a single speed specific cog, a superstar one.
And ah right I see, I did modify the derailleur so it pushed up but I couldnt shorten the chain enough for it to actually tension the chain. So looks like I’ll need a one of these and this

mollyiom Thinking about it, pretty much. Chains done about 50 miles, the cogs done under 100.

So basically its because there isn’t enough chain wrap?
For what reason would it jump to one side but not the other though?

    R.lepecha

yeah I know the chain line isn’t too visible, I’ll try get a better chain line picture tomorrow.
I cant take any more links out of the chain because if I take 1 link out(well 2, but you know what I mean I hope) then its too short to be even run without a tensioner.

The tensioners an old derailleur which I have modified and the spring is really quite tight.

    Im running 32:16

Now, from thinking about what they said about the forum being accessible to people of every age, which is true.

But being only 15 myself even though I use the said words myself a decent amount, If some one wrote a word of that nature and I was younger I would just take it as its an adult forum. That’s no problem.

Best bit I love about this forum is its one of the only ones that isn’t blocked by Leedslearning.net so therefore even though all the rude and bad words are used on here its clearly not seen as that bad to learning authority’s since almost every other forum is blocked.

If you use woollyhatshop you better hope there’s no need to return anything, Im still waiting for them to send a replacement 10 speed shifter which was faulty from new!

I’ve never had a problem with WHS, They sent me out the wrong size 7sp cassette spacer once and they managed to get me one sent out and recieved next day even though it was about 4pm when I rang them.

Thats confusing, because if it rubs in the middle on 9th, it should do it in the bottom too because theres a larger angle on the chain. sounds like you need to move the front derailuer across about 1mm. Also probably back the top end rear derailuer stop screw a little bit.

reweighed, about 32.2lb with snow, saddle bag and pump on. so I’m guessing about 30-31lb with none of them.
That’s a 3-4lb saving by just going single speed! To make it even lighter I could get new forks, saving about 1lb-1.5lb and lighter wheels, saving about 1lb. I aint going to though 😛
