Correct – confusing him with someone else of the same name. Memory must be getting bad, although that was a while back now

    That’s a bit @rsey.

Maybe so. But where I grew up and shot on local farms, lots of wealthy incomers arrived and started complainig about everything that makes the countryside the countryside – cocks crowing, cows shitting & making a mess, the smell & untidiness of it all, people out shooting….

They might by half a mile or a mile downrange, but the shot falls from the sky at some point – it’s called gravity…
Sheesh, shot from a shot gun cartridge that can travel up to a mile away! birdshot only has an effective kill range of 50-70 meters and might travel 300 meters with the wind behind hit, although they could of been shooting pheasant with solid slugs which might travel up to a mile?
    Sorry, awaiting the “Guns”
    POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

I’ ve always reckoned 45-50yds, but shot can travel long way in the air before falling back to the ground (often had the shot from the next set of woods fall back around me. Of course it has no power to it – a bit like being out in hail

Err? Then you were assuming in the case described above he was not on a RoW which he says he was. Different case of course if we’re talking private land and the ‘numpty’ is trespassing…

AA, if you re-read my first post, you’ll see that I was sympathetic towards the OP, and agreed that the shooter concerned was being an arse (in terms of his manner).

I went on to describe my own experiences – where telling people that there was a shoot on was for everyones safety, especially numpties walking around where they shouldn’t be…

AA, you make the incorrect assumption that there were any RoW in the area I was describing – there are not.

I haven’t been shooting for about 10 years now. Too many people want to charge you for the privilege (vermin / rough shooting is not the same nobby sport as organised game shoots). And, sadly, the countryside is too full of people who have little understanding of the countryside….

He told the inquiry that the Blair government had fewer Cabinet meetings than his immediate predecessors, including Lady Thatcher, and his successors as prime ministers because he took a “certain view” about what could be achieved through collective decisions

Truly shocking, and it goes on to infer un-minuted meetings / informal groups where the real discussions and decisions were taken.

This isn’t bad corporate governance at a greedy conglomerate – this is supposed to be the workings of a democracy – but democracy was obviously an incumberance to doing business in an “effective” manner…

This should transcend politics… more about personal qualities.

Agree with Ken Clarke, Livingstone, Benn, Ashdown.

Would add all (well, perhaps not that many?) those consituency MPs who do actually stand up and represent the interests of their consituents, rather than pandering to the pwoer brokers.

Robert Hicks, Ian Penhaligon, Matthew Taylor…

Acid / fat from fingerprints will mark the surface if not cleaned, as well.

Beware Netgear N routers (check models carefully)

We had a DGN2000 and the ethernet ports packed up. Apparently this is a common fault, linked to the design being prone to overheating

Currently trying a Billion, but too early to tell. Easy set up and good signal strength, just hope it lasts longer than the Netgear.

You’ve got your logic completely the wrong way round rkk.

No, I don’t think so. My logic is based on safety.

Informing people that there is a shoot on and that certain areas are unsafe is not just logical, but is also responsible.

Unfortunately, some people just will not be told.

A lot of hysterical over-reaction here (not the OP, but certainly with the follow up posts)…

The chap was certainly being a tosser and could have represented his sport in a far better way, but I don’t see any implied threat.

We regularly used to advise people to leave the woods during the February pigeon shooting season. All the locals would know that Saturday afternoons in February were the annual pigeon shoot, but you’d always get some numpty coming for an amble through the woods.

It’s really not a case of “get orf my land”, more a case of “there’s a shoot on, you’d be safer somewhere else”…

.. and yes I have directly told people in the past that they risk getting shot. That is not in any way a threat – just that you do need to be sure that there is nobody around downrange.

People wandering through the woods are liable to complain about being “shot” when hit by shotgun pellets raining down through the woods. They might by half a mile or a mile downrange, but the shot falls from the sky at some point – it’s called gravity…

I think there were quite a few red team volunteers from around here (S Wales Valleys) for the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War.

A dangerous generalisation, but the only current parallel, perhaps (but without the religious dimension), would be UK born people joining overseas campaigns that are diametrically opposed to our own Government’s actions. Not something you see that often…

A very interesting, volatile period in relatively recent history – extreme diffrences in views / acceptability between personal beliefs and action and National interests and actions. And of course, we view it with all through a lens focused by the horror of post war realisation of what the Nazis really did, and a long Cold War stand off against an equally despicable Soviet regime.

    No, not Finnish. Scandinavian though.

At the time I was told that many of them fought the Soviets from way before Hitler got involved on the Eastern Front. The way it was put to me – they carried on and fought with Hitler’s armies, not through a common ideology, but through fear of a common enemy.

    – As NATO always feared post war, the Scandinavian peninsula is very narrow when you have a very large, militarised, revolutionary neighbour

That’s exactly the puzzled question that I asked when told that he had fought the Russians for that length of time…

But yes, basically he fought the Winter War with the Finns and then carried on. Not sure about any “unofficial” skirmishes before / after the Winter War (ie pre 39 and between 39 and 41).

As I said, some difficult ethical questions here, but a potentially fascinating story

Sorry for the thread resurrection – but this one has had me thinking over the last weeek…

The chap I mentioned up there ^ – a very interesting character, and this thread got me thinking about whether it was possible (or ethical even) to try and find out a little more…(perhaps not about the individual, but maybe about the units etc)

So, way OT for a bike forum, but WTH, seems like there are plenty on here with WW2 / military interest etc.

What I do know about the person I met:

His name, but wont be revealing that on a public forum…this relates to one of the most controversial periods in modern history.

Fought the Russians – from at least 1939 (possibly earlier), continuously through to 1945, and he survived (obviously, but possibly unusually given the brutality of the Eastern Front…).

    – He was decorated for bravery, personally by Adolf Hitler

    – For at least part of 1939-45 he was in the Waffen SS, but was NOT German!

What I don’t know, but has kind of captured my curiosity…

    – I believe that he was in the SS Wiking / Nordland Division / Regiment

    – I have been told that he was in a front fighting unit throughout (not camp guard type SS etc). Seven years is a long time to have been fighting the Russians on the front line – where? when? etc come to mind…

    – How the hell did he survive? I can’t imagine that SS troops would have survived in Russian hands, although have read that many of the hardened German units fought their way back to areas of Germany occupied by the Western Allies.

    – As a non-German in the SS, I guess he didn’t just get told to go home at the end of the war…?

Anyone got any thoughts on sources for more info?
I am accutely aware that it is a very controversial topic. I am in no way a right wing sympathiser or apologist – just interested in what a non-German did in a 7 year campaign against the Russians. I have been told that many of his countrymen did the same, not necessarily through any National Socialist leanings, but through a fear of being annihilated by the Soviets.

I once camped at the farm of a man who fought on the eastern front for six years. He was in his 80s at the time; quiet, rather pleasant, but hard as nails

Going from the airport to town on the bus took almost as long as flying there from Cardiff.

And Cardiff’s a model useful airport????

Whenever I need to go anywhere (Edinburgh excepted) I have to drive to Bristol to get a plane…

And both Bristol and Cardiff airports are in fields in the middle of nowhere

Seat back by 1-1.5″ made a big difference to mine.

I also have a Thompson layback post, but haven’t felt the need to try it on the Anthem.

Funnily enough I got the Thompson for another Giant – a Large 20″ Reign that I had before the Anthem…. the short cockpit on that definately needed the layback post as my weight was way over the front and packing down the forks on braking / steep descents, much as you describe for the Anthem
