Sounds like the guy who used to run / work in the Bike Shed in Exeter.

He had a a road bike with that pedal arrangement – one side was fixed, the other crank rotated, so he only pedalled on one side.

IIRC he had been injured and one knee was locked???

    Nice chap BTW

Well I appreciated ems’ advice – as well as the other advice on here … it’s all good.

Specifically, I think emsz was spot on with the getting fluency with the main chord progressions and getting the strumming patterns off.

It’s only recently that I’ve started to pay more attention to what my right hand is doing!!!

… and still need to speed up that C to G chord change 😡

ETA – To start with I did find getting a clean sounding A chord quite dificult – large fingers, and getting all three into the space on the fret was tricky… moving up the board to the shorter frets is even more tricky – deffo one for the 3 strings under 1 finger approach!

    new guitar for Xmas?

Mmmm – has been mentioned in the rkk01 household….

Very much like the looks and sound of the small Epiphone semi-hollow body – ES-339

Alex, you seem to be reading words that don’t actually appear onscreen.

That was the point I was making…. I can’t see any point where 50rpm is mentioned as the cadence at which anyone runs out of gears… 😯

I’ve not had the cadence sensor fitted on the road bike for very long, but for the mtb my cadence generally sits in to 60-100/120 range.

I do have lessons – between 1 per fortnight to 1 per month, depending on my own and my teacher’s commitments…

Lesson format tends to be more on the theory / what to do side – with me practicing in between lessons. We also tend to jump around a bit depending on how either / both feel.

This w/e was power chords. Previous before that was blues and natural scales, before that combining picking short riffs interspersed with chord sequences

You spin out at 50 rpm?

    Has anyone said this???

Is you’re max cadence about 50 rpm?

Just looked at my Garmin stats for the Land’s End 100 sportive. Avergae cadence was 63 – higher cadence sections about 95-100…. so yes, there is certainly room for me to increase my leg speed!

That ride was a lot of short steep hills though

I just posted “change gear” on another thread – I really, really dont get compact cranksets 😯

been looking at a new road bike, and the low / mid range bikes all seem to have compact chainsets…. why?

I’ve never regarded myself as either fit or competitive, but I will spin out my 53/39 set up on most rides

(just swapped out a 12-23 cassette for 11-25)

But have got a lot of pleasure from making progress with both 😀

    emsz – good advice.

I do find changes to open G cause a little hestitation, especially C to G… getting the little fingers onto the treble strings 😐

I think I initially concentrated a lot on what the fretboard hand was doing, with less emphasis on the right hand – and a subsequent lack of musicality.

Trying to get the strumming / picking more in time has made my efforts sound more like music!

ETA – mrs rkk01 has asked for some noise cancelling headphones for Xmas 😳

You’ll never be as good as you want to be when playing the guitar

Yep – started with that attitude. Musical numpty me, so any progress was regarded as a bonus.

Have been playing with B & F barres – and there respective shapes going up the neck. Can’t consistently get the barre finger to fret out the treble strings, without some buzzing, but have been improving…

Been doing some power chords, with right and left hand muting (much more practice required though 🙁 )

Also been playing with hammer on / pull offs and minor pentatonic scales…

my point being pretty simply that you seem to belittle someone who has done a massive job in raising awareness in cancer and raised a hell of a lot of money towards fighting it

Livestrong / Armstrong have broken ties to help save the foundation.

I don’t get the “cancer awarenesss” thing – it reads like marketing BS to me…

There have been plenty of questions asked about the charity and it’s operations – about time some light was shone on that aspect of LA’s activities as well.

    Question – genuine one…

Does anyone believe that Livestrong can / does do any good in a “civilised country”?

Surely, every pound raised for Livestrong in the UK is to the detriment of our domestic cancer charities…?

Maybe we should trial everyone like that

    Err – we do???

FWIW, I strongly suspect that the USADA actions will be followed up with criminal investigations / charges, the civil litigation is already in the pipeline (SCA)

I was reading a piece a few weeks ago about USPS and federal funding – a little along the lines of the dropped FBI investigation. Apparently in the US anyone can make a complaint of misappropriation of federal funds, and the State is obliged to investigate. Furthermore, the complainant gets to share in a “bounty” based on a % of the misappropriated funds – which is many, many $ millions….

… then there is the whole perjury element. By being quiet, LA has not yet contradicted himself in court. BUT, he is still likely to be called in the Bruyneel hearing, where he risks perjuring himself, and he is still open to other “invites” to provide evidence under oath.

I’m struggling to see how he can even avoid a stretch in prison…

I was just going to cc the bold lines, but the whole thing seemed appropriate…

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I’d something more to say.

I’m crap at this sort of thing 😐

There’s stuff I’d like to do. The boldnesss is in there, somewhere, but the secure wins out every time

    emsz is right…

I did the same thing this time last year. Picked up a cheap Epiphone Les Paul Special(I) on ebay. It is a heavy guitar, but everyone who has tried it says it plays really nicely. Pick ups are a bit muddy, but, hell, it was cheap enough not to worry if I didn’t like / couldn’t play…

Wouldn’t bother spending 200+ on the guitar, maybe 200 incl amp. Fender Mustang I is 90 odd quid, again, has worked well for my learning.

Ohh, and I found the whole “go to a shop” idea very intimidating. Easy to say when you can play a bit – shit advice (IMHO) if you’re a proper newby learner

Sold the S-Max via WBAC, late last year.

They knocked us down £75 per wheel on the state of the alloys (which we expected – just not that much!).

Including the reductions, they offered about £100 less than the highest bid it received on ebay. I haggled and we split the difference, so I ended up just £50 less than the proce that it didn’t sell for on the bay…

Ohhh, and they failed to spot the holed exhaust pipe that I had patched and that wasn’t about to get through the iminent MoT 😉

So, all in all, getting rid of a 2nd hand car is always painful, but provided you’ve already faced up to the fact that it’s worth bugger all, then WBAC kind of gets the job done

The DSL1 does look more versatile….

… but then the DSL40C looks even more versatile, and is cheaper

    Anyone tried the DSL 40 / 15 or 50th Anniversary DSL1???
