If they’ve found Higgs it’s potentially massive

About 130GeV apparently. :-)

I doubt if anyone can give you proper advice without knowing more about your business and your setup, all I can say is that AVG is free for non-commercial use so it sounds like you’re already employing dodgy practices.

Edit: and MSE is only free if you have 10 or fewer PCs, so I doubt if that’s your answer.

WTF is a maintenance wash?

Hot wash to clean out the gunk.

We put dishcloths etc in an armageddon wash with suitably aggressive cleaning chemicals every month or so to clear it out, seems slightly less wasteful than an empty wash. And back on topic it’s one of those machines that weighs the washing and measures the water and it only fills to below the level of the door.

this it is what scpetics do

So imagine I was a sceptic (an assumption on your part, the only point I was making is that the message is presented badly), do you think you’ve convinced me or anyone else by reasoned argument and pertinent facts? Or have you just demonstrated my point for me? 8)

Rio

Well the simple facts are
1. Co2 is a greenhouse gas
2,. Co2 rates have increased – burning carbon based fossil fuels
3. The temperature has increased

I’m guessing you’re not a scientist. I won’t bother taking that apart but this is exactly the sort of over-simplified “explanation” and certainty that discredits climate science in the general public’s view, positions it as a belief system and feeds the skeptics. Have a read of what konagirl put above for a more reasoned position.

I dont think you can convince a sceptic with facts tbh

Many climate change sceptics are perfectly rational people who are not in the pay of big oil companies. Many of them could be convinced by appropriate facts. But correctly presented facts are thin on the ground whereas opinions are not in short supply. This may of course be because the right facts are not available.

Rio

Konagirl – well put.

The sceptics will jump on that scientific rigour and say ‘there is no proof’

This is surely relatively easy to counter by an appropriately phrased risk statement. My main issue is that often the messages that are put out are misleading or simply wrong. The skeptics can they say “you are wrong” and the argument is lost.

Edit: and when people fall for the incorrect statements it reinforces the impression that climate change is a belief system and not a scientific study.

failed to understand the simple explanation above

That atnospheric cooling continues to the high level where the jet stream is found, forcing the jet stream further south

The less gullible will have noticed that cold air tends to stay down, not rise to high levels in the atmosphere where the jet stream is. One theory is that as the arctic warms it reduces the pressure difference between the arctic and lower lattitudes which allows the jet stream to bend more, and at the moment it happens to be bending in such a way that we get crap weather.

One of the biggest enemies to getting the climate change message across is that the messages that are put out tend to be over-simplified or wrong. The converts and the gullible will ignore this, but surely the target must be the skeptics, so the messages must be consistent and correct?

Presumably there’s a little spring under the blue lockout dial which has been knackered?

The spring’s inside the damping mechanism and I suspect would be hard to replace. I assume you mean you’re having to pull the cable at the fork crown to remove damping, not to lock the fork. This usually happens when the cable’s damaged for some reason; it doesn’t take much extra cable friction to defeat the spring.

Best solution is to do a search on here for threads on removing the poploc and replacing it with the damping adjustment on the crown, which has the added advantage of working properly – poploc is the most useless thing I’ve ever come across on a fork.

Indeed, and the agreement specifically states that immunity applies to the corporation and not to individuals, but given the way it’s worded it’s reasonable to assume that Barclays will get away with just the fine and sacking a few traders as long as it continues to cooperate. As you say, it’s the other banks that now have to worry.

how come no ones gone to prison ??

Looks like Barclays did a deal for shopping all the other banks. From the FBI report:

After government authorities began investigating allegations that banks had engaged in manipulation of benchmark interest rates, Barclays was the first bank to cooperate in a meaningful way in disclosing its conduct relating to LIBOR and EURIBOR. Barclays’ disclosure included relevant facts that at the time were not known to the government. Barclays’s cooperation has been extensive, in terms of the quality and type of information and assistance provided, and has been of substantial value in furthering the department’s ongoing criminal investigation.

Interesting that Barclays apparently tried to tell the FSA that everyone was at it but they ignored it. Another piece of “light touch” regulation I expect.

Gunk works well, just make sure you remove it all before re-lubing. Interesting piece here on retaining the factory lube –

“The grease that comes on a Shimano chain is applied at the factory to the individual pieces before the chain is assembled. The grease does a better job of reducing friction than aftermarket chain lubes and it lasts longer.”

I would guess the same applies to KMC/SRAM.

Perhaps it should have been given to the banks in such a way as to reduce folks outstanding mortgages given that house price inflation was one of the major causes of the whole crisis.

But that would have led to more house price inflation thus exacerbating a house price bubble that is still hanging over the economy. It needed to go into something that created jobs that couldn’t easily go abroad, like infrastructure construction.

As above there’s loads to ride in the Chilterns, albeit a bit boggy at the moment, and depending on what sort of riding you’re looking for there’s always Aston Hill, not too far from M40/M1.

they’ve now blamed it on Indian IT guys writing dodgy code

I hope that isn’t the case – everyone writes dodgy code every now and then. The blame surely belongs with whoever owns the processes that allowed the dodgy code into production. That may of course also have been outsourced…

if you buy Apple stuff you use an Apple charger

Not necessarily true – I charge my iDevices from whatever’s convenient, which may be the Apple USB charger that came with my phone or may be my PC or my iMac or my car or my USB battery pack…

Surely the main issue with this is whether you can charge the device using USB voltages and currents; beyond that all you need is an appropriate cable or adaptor. The main purpose of the European standard is to get rid of those proprietary voltage adaptors like the old Nokia ones of which I have about half a dozen lying round somewhere, including the one for Mrs R’s Nokia phone (which is different from all the previous ones).

Why did cameron pick jimmy carr

The Times did the original piece naming Jimmy Carr, then as I understand it a BBC reporter asked Cameron what he thought of Carr’s tax arrangements. The rest is a very long STW thread history.

anyone can join

Not entirely true but the membership criteria are so lax that it might as well be, e.g. you seem to be able to join if you’re a member of the AA so try telling them you’re a member of Singletrack Forum – that may work.

Whether it’s worth it depends on you; lots of electrical and clothing bargains etc but it mainly it sells household goods in large quantities or packs so you need (a) space to store stuff and (b) a sufficient appetite to eat things before they go off. Before we joined we went and had a look round the store and I was hooked as soon as I saw the boats for sale; Mrs R was enticed by the cheap catfood.

do people still sell motherboard, CPU and RAM bundles

Have a look at Scan, they do some quite good bundles. You’ll probably want a new graphics card as well, and maybe a new power supply if you’re going for something gnarr. Neither need be expensive.

So it’s a tablet. Wonder if they’ll have a fire sale like HP in a few months?

Edit: or is it a laptop? Built in keyboard in the cover, sounds like a laptop with the keyboard and screen swapped.

it’ll be easier to make an up and over door secure

I think you may be missing some of the points on the other thread – if you buy a roller door it’s most likely secure by design (unless you go to a really dodgy supplier). If you get an up-and-over door you generally need to do something to secure it.

Rio
Full Member

Roller door can take up less usable space in the garage but you can’t block it by parking the car outside. Also unlike the up-and-over can’t be used as a rain-shelter when fettling things. As above – see other thread.

Rio

Depends what sort of garage door it is. Ours is a roller-shutter type thing like the sort of thing shops use to stop people breaking in when they’re closed; it’s supposed to be pretty secure, the key is coded like a car key and you can always switch it off if you’re worried about someone cloning the key. On the other hand many up-and-over garage doors are made of tinfoil and aren’t very secure regardless of how many or what sort of locks you have.

I’d lock the bikes seperately if you’re at all worried.

Runkeeper does this if you subscribe to Runkeeper Live; I’ve stopped using it because their GPS tracking on iOS became desperately unreliable which limits its usefulness but others don’t seem to have the same problem. I believe you can let people follow your progress on Facebook as well as their web site. As above, Endomondo does it and Mrs R regularly uses it to see where I am when I’m out running/biking but we do it by her knowing my login ID; not something I would recommend for a wider audience.

I’d like to see the creation of a national bank whereby profits are returned back to the investors/savers and not into the pockets of it’s shareholders

You could call it something like “The Co-operative Bank“.

What happened to the last lot then?

Like any attempt to print money it resulted in inflation, which was presumeably the intention – if nothing else works try to inflate the debt away. I expect this lot will go the same way.

Some advice based on travelling recently with someone who had a gas cylinder for an avalanche airbag in their hold luggage –

Print out the bit from the BA web site saying it’s ok, and put a copy in your case preferably wrapped round the cartridges. That way if airport security find them you’re less likely to find your bag enjoying a controlled explosion.

Take a copy of the BA stuff with you to show to airport security and/or the captain on the flight – we ended up with the airport absolving themselves of responsibility and leaving it to the captain’s discretion whether to allow the bag containing the gas cylinder on the flight.

When you check in your bag don’t tell them it contains gas cylinders if they don’t ask. You would not believe what trouble and how many unnecessary phone calls round the airport it can cause.

Personally I wouldn’t bother having seen all the hassle (and having nearly missed the flight and causing the plane to miss its slot resulting in a walk of shame down the plane).

looking at the screen on the Touchpad after using an iPad is bloody awful.

If you’re talking about the retina display then any screen looks awful in comparison.

The OS is nice, but the hardware is slow slow slow slow

Not had any problems with the performance of my Touchpad – it seems to be as responsive as an iPad – but the limited range of apps is a bit of an issue and makes you realise how valuable the iOS ecosystem is. I’ve been running Android (ics) on it as well as WebOS so that Mrs R can play Angry Birds Space and find that iOS and WebOS are really well thought through in comparison; maybe Android’s good for phones but it doesn’t cut it yet for a tablet. YMMV if you’re a geek.

If I were starting from scratch I’d stump up the extra cash for an iPad, which is what I’ll probably do when I break the Touchpad.

Nothing in it that’s a big deal to me, and if it makes my 3GS go any slower I’ll be tempted to go personally to Cupertino and stick it somewhere it shouldn’t go.

I’ve used various bits – pair of Tog24 salopettes has lasted for years, my ski gloves from them are the best I’ve had. Quality IME is somewhat below the higher end brands like Arcteryx or Peak Performance but generally similar or better than recent North Face, and it doesn’t have the chav factor that NF seems to have gained.

Just done some diagnostics, and my problem is the same as the one in blade72003’s link – where the pawl spring broke it looks as though the freehub body has been forced against the ratchet ring and created ridges just big enough to catch on the ring. These make the bag-of-nails noise. Looks like a bit of filing and/or a new freehub body are in order.

If you’ve been running it without one of the pawls I’d suggest you get a new set before too much damage is done.

Rio
Full Member

Mine’s making the same noise but I haven’t got around to taking it apart to see what it is yet so I can’t really help you! For what it’s worth I’ve changed the axle, bearings and pawl springs (one of them was broken) on mine since I first noticed the noise so at this stage I’m guessing none of them in isolation is the cause.
