Very interesting build there Mick. Not the type of bike I would ride but bravo for the executing an idea and riding the product.

The measurement would not be in isolation though but it is a very important measurement when taken in relation to head angle and front centre to maintain a wheelbase that is not like a barge.

Longer front centre and shorter chainstays (within reason) has got to be a good thing within a given wheelbase.

Bullheart – what frame is that?

2 soul QH weighs a ton – thinking more along the lines of a Cotic Soul for the 29er world (yes I know there will be the Solaris but there needs to be others) but the type of bike that can happily mix it up on the Peak or Lakes classics but is not built like a tank and still has lots of finesse.

New Singular sounds very interesting Sam – what’s the ETA? Early 2012?

From the website the whyte 29er seem to be 16.7 inches. Pretty good.

Seen very short chainstays from waltworks and other US manufacturers but custom only. Usually by having an ofset seat tube but not always

Will look at the Whyte, the others seem to be all mountain frames

They flock from far and wide to ride the big daddy in the Peak.

Well they did before the bastards spent £50k – Flattening it

Think we are going to do this next year as we can start at my folks house (rather than Lancaster)

First half are all the roads I used to do as a kid in the old roadie days.

It’s £110 to get it re-sprayed and only £50 extra to get both the bridges moved. So it seems like an ideal optertunity to make a great frame perfect.

Btw – my frame has the disc brake Chainstay/seatstay brace already but still has the other two bridges.

Only real reason I’m slightly worried as it’s a off road steel frame which weighs sub-4lb. So if the bridges are structural I need to ensure that if it’s modded the strength will be the same.

But most steel frames without them seem make a point that they have been engineered with a solution to avoid using them – eg small gussets on the chainstays/bb area. I’m sure mk1 Cotic Souls had these.

Replace the stays!! Fairly drastic and not really an option.

They would cut and grind the bridges off rather than apply heat. They will only apply heat with the new bridges.

Totally agree with you about Bob J experience but it was a yes, yes, yes from them, just pick from the price list. Which is fine but Bob J do specialise in road bikes.

So I was asking the question on here as in know there are certain guys who frequent this forum who specislise in mountain bikes. So a second opinion is never a bad thing.

It’s a very expensive frame so I don’t want to mess this up.

New Genesis 29er Adventure frame looks like a good cheaper alternative to a Salsa Fargo. No V brake though

Well we followed the advice from the Dales centre – I’m very sure it doesnt measure up to the Peak or the Lakes

I will but on the road bike

Rusty – From Sheffield – like rocky descents like Chapel Gate, Cut Gate Walna Scar, Nan Bield, Snowdon Rangers etc etc

Or floaty endless wafer thin singletrack like Minton Batch

Found the Dales to have neither.

Found Swaledale endless hills with very little reward.

Stayed at the Dales mountain biking centre a few months ago – great place but the riding was utter pants – all uphill and the descents were shockingly bad.

Grass descents are fast – but with out a singletrack ribbon just not fun enough.
And all that Limestone but no descents like Cavedale – shame.

Just plotted an amazing road ride around Malham and Littondale area looks fare better than the mountain biking. Tiny singletrack roads with great views. I’ll stick to the road.

I’ve got the vertebrae graphics guide and every route has been a bit of a let down.

I like big sky’s and big hills but I also like a big descent when if I’ve put in the effort on the up.

    Will I remain disappointed??

is the weight that different? surely its about 200g?

    RP23 is about 250g

CCDB and spring is knockcing on for a kilo.

Not as bad as you think with a Ti Spring on the Five

    rp23 190×50 ~ 245 grams

CCDB with Ti spring 190×50 – 620 grams with mounting hardware.

If anybody is interested I have a Orange Five frame with Ti CCDB for sale:

    Beautiful :-)

I’ve been hankering after one after reading this:

    http://blackmountaincycles.blogspot.com/2011/04/its-like-church-but-better.html

but the price is just too much around $3500 for the one above. I couldn’t justify it even if i was turning 40!

But after contacting Enigma i can get a full custom Ti frame like the one in the blog for a much more reasonable ~£1,500 (minus the s&s)

    But enjoy……

p.s – I too was wondering what the weld on the seat tube was for? Seatpost shim insert maybe??

Or if somebody has a charge duster and would be able to measure the distance from the centre of the drop out to the chain stay bridge and seat stay bridge – so I know the distance. It would be a huge help.

    Cheers

Cheers Dean0 on the bar info will look into those.

The SV looks amazing – have you got the custom sprayed dt hubs? Would it be cheeky to ask how much a frame and forks like that cost? I know they dont make many a year.

Dean0 – what bars are you running on te Yeti? The look to fit Campag egro levers perfectly – with an easy reach on the drops.

I cant wait to see the first rider at a trail centre – fully padded up, with their MET Parachute on and Neck Brace in place making a pig’s ear of coming down any of the descents………its going to happen, you know it will.

I’ll be laughing so hard i’ll probably fall of my bike :-)

    Rik

Any reason why you would want to? The weight of saint brakes is in the caliper not in the lever.

No QR – on the seat do you not drop it for downs? Seems a bit of a waste on a frame like that if you dOnt

    Same equipment, wheels and forks.

You really think that steel is going to be slower than carbon. As if it will make a difference. Doubt it….oooooooo it will be 0.0002 secs slower or 1 watt less power. Just get out training more that’s what wins races not if it’s steel or carbon.

    Rik
    Free Member

Bit out of the budget at £600 but if you need forks as well……And fancy carbon….

New Planet X/On one full carbon CX frame looks like a good deal. Give a few months and they will prob down to sub £500 if the 456C is anything to go buy

Don’t expect a lighter build than 33lb on a Five if you go for coil front and rear suspension

    Rik
    Free Member

Alpine is 1 lb heavier than the Five frame with the same shock.

CCDB will be heavier on the Alpine due to longer damper and heavier spring

    Rik
    Free Member

That’s CCDB vs RP23 weight difference on a Five 50×190 shock

    Rik
    Free Member

Yes there is – Nukeproof Ti springs as I have one..

Weight difference is only 400g with a Ti spring too (with my 400lb spring)

    Rik
    Free Member

Also my skill is not top notch, so the Alpine ‘forgives’ my lack of skill, a lot!

Interesting reason to buy a bike……
