Take a look at decathlon , I have just purchased the mrs a bike from there. Decent enough spec for the price with aluminium frame and Hayes mechanical brakes, it’s their own brand, a mtb B’twin Rockrider 5.3 (it is what it is kind of thing)

They also had hybrids, but I have not looked at them in any detail.

I have had a quick loop on it and it does feel ok and rides smooth considering. (Main use is canal and cycle paths, )

it’s worth taking a look, you will find you may get the most for your money,

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Just been out and done a quick 10 miles following the changes i made last night (40 psi increase ish) it feels a lot better in climb mode and i can still use 90% travel in descent mode so i think i’m getting very near now.

I guess its like comparing chalk and cheese when talking single pivot v multi, plus different boost valve rates (mines 225)

@doncorleoni, im 2.5 stone greater than you, before kit but decreasing! 🙂 so therefore to get the optimal performance as designed I need to become the optimal user profile 🙂

I have read about the air can volume reductions and nearly purchased some last week but thought i would just stick with tweaking it first but i will think about that. – thanks for reminding me.

The bike was purchased direct from the Orange Factory, (it was an photo shoot bike) They are also very helpful so I may call in at some point.

@daveh, im in the same thought process of you too, I have not tried tweaking the trail mode today, but will do that later today when i go out for an evening loop.

spacer – (yeah its a shame you cant buy just the one! – need to find a lightweight who does not need his big spacer!) 🙂

Cheers for the input guys, very useful.

    Thanks

    Thanks doncorleoni, really interesting reply.

    My shock is a 225 BV, Med/Med.

Im currently not getting that “night and day” difference between climb, trail and descent. (I am unable to notice any difference with the 3 presets for trail mode.) Dont get me wrong, it is very plush, uses the travel well when pushed and you can feel the slight difference and see the travel usage between climb and descent. Not sure if my expectations are greater than should be expected.

However… im off out on the bike again in a bit to see how it rides following amending the pressures last night. (again)

Im thinking if i don’t have much look it maybe time to go down the tuning option.

(I know there is plenty of factors etc, but what psi are you running ? )

    Cheers

I run Tech Evo M4’s with 183mm saw rotors (front and rear) paired up with Pro 2 Evo Hubs.

Stopping power is great and the modulation is as you would expect. Really happy with mine… plus they look great too!!

TIP — (i know this does not fit your needs, but could help others…)

I purchased one of these 2 weeks ago as I needed a smaller bag when just out for a few hours for £25.00

    Giant Cascade 1 Hydration Pack

Giant Cascade 1 Cycling Hydration Pack features a 2 litre reservoir for cross country rides when travelling light is your priority.

    http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/.Giant-Cascade-1-Hydration-Pack_122700.htm

It comes with a 2 litre Widepac SOURCE bladder. which retail around the £20 quid range anyway.

So for me… a new bag for around a fiver to “tick them boxes” and a new bladder. (also.. the end cap for the teat can come off the bag too. )

    Hope this helps.

    Just a quick update…

Been tweaking the settings on my forks and shock and have since still not got it 100% how i would like it to feel, (more like 85% there 🙂 ) therefore I have gone back to basic’s…..

If any owners out there want to revert their CTD Fork or rear shock back to the factory settings for you weight, go to – http://www.ridefox.com/content.php?c=app and read the info there…

Then DOWNLOAD the iphone app and run through the config after entering you TAG ID which is printed on the fork/shock.

Couple of example pic’s below of the iphone app taken from the fox site –

    Nice.. some great photos above.

This is a stock photo of mine below which Orange Bikes had taken (my bike was an ex photo shoot bike. – never ridden)

At the time it was for sale on the Orange Bike site, a few other local dealer “sub” advertised it too.

My mates mrs has a Boardman COMPfi, great spec for the price in my opinion, plus get it on a cycle to work scheme to save tax on it too.

I have been looking for a bike for my MRS too, but currently no women’s Boardman’s are listed on the Halfords site, plus none on the shop floor’s in my local stores…….

Where I ride you don’t tend to get really that much use for a dropper. I’ve gone back to a standard post.

TBH I found a dropper is like carrying round a mobile in your pocket- more faff to life.

You soon readapt back. All that bollocks ‘oh I suddenly came to a drop in the trail with my seat post up like an XC bike’.

Hmmm never happened to me. I don’t tend to ride with a huge amount of seatpost showing anyway.

I find it enables me to run the seat at my perfect height for tarmac climbing and smoother bridleway types of surfaces when onroute or on way home, then on a trail drop it an inch or so and then slam it for the decents..

You dont even think about it now.. its just second nature…

    Hello,

I had a look last night and cant seem to figure out how to stop the metal pad “spring” catching ?? There’s enough play in it to produce such a noise with zero impact in braking.

Im 99% sure its the pad spring, but should these be sat floating or more secure. ??

    Any tips ?

    Thanks

Around 15 years ago, when we were less mature lets say…. a mate of mine hit a female jogger when we where on a really quick decent. (around 10 of us)

Her husband saw us and moved out of the way but his Mrs did not see us and stayed in the centre of the moorland track / trail.

It resulted in my mate hitting her square on knocking her over and into a drystone wall. My mate folded his wheel and snapped his manitou forks just by the brake bolster..

Worst part… around 5 miles from a tarmac road, its amazing what a few zip ties and a few of us can do trying to straightening a wheel by moving spokes around to get home creating a skeleton wheel!!

I dont need any more presets….
My Reverb has a preset, climb / flat smooth mode then drop it on any type of decent / happy medium!

Could do with one lever to change my rear shock, fork and seat post in one go… CTD

Thing is…. The five in a 26 form has ticked the boxes for the last 10 years… so it must of been doing something right.

In regards to the 650b option, I hear its not a massive difference in ride compared to the jump from a 26er to the 29er.

Cheers for that mike, i will take a look.

Im going to take the shims out again as its not resolved the issue anyway.

Just a shame it takes so long to fine tune them… test ride.. and tweak again…. etc..

    Thank you

Thanks = I will take a look at the pad spring again.

In regards to the temp, i should of added i can replicate the issue under say 50% braking power when the rotors are cold at 10mph.

    Thanks

thanks – no, dont think so, looks all clean and plenty of room within reason.

The caliper pin did have a tiny bit of scoring on it when I rotated the pin 180′ degrees. (cant confirm that was never there though but does look like the offending part I think.)
