Not sure what you mean. The seatpost is a 27.2 but the seat-tube is a 30.0 so the shim will be 27.2 to 30.0. Is that what you meant?

If it feels unstable with 160mm forks I don’t think going to 140mm will make it any better, probably worse.

You’ll prolly need to be much looser on a hardtail than FS so your legs do the work of the suspension. Take note of how you ride on the Pitch and then see.

I’m 5ft 11 too (but longish legs for my height) and went for the 16.5 inch but I won’t be doing epic rides on it, mostly 2 to 3 hour blasts and sessioning in the woods. I had a large Chameleon and wish I’d bought a Medium for the same reason.

Why would a layback seatpost help over rocks? Do you sit down riding over rocky stuff?

Bought a frame only and built it up from my old bits. Not been able to use it yet though as I’m still waiting on a shim for the seatpost – I found out the hard way that their website is wrong. Big reason for buying was the low BB which is lower than most of the other frames of similar niche. Nice for railing those turns.

Here’s mine. I’ll be swapping the Minutes for my old Pikes when I can be bothered.

I’d say that’s safe. They say ‘ass’ in it, but it’s just a recording of a prank call. Very funny too.

Local bike shop will be the best place. Don’t forget the ferrules and those natty little things that crimp on the end of the cable.

Forgot to add, Alpitude is more for mucking about, Altitude is a bit more XC and lighter. So, depends what stuff you ride as to which would be preferable.

Just got myself a Genesis Alpitude frame from 18Bikes for £360. Not used it yet as I need a seatpost shim, but it looks nice and is relatively cheap for 853. Not the best finish in the world, but its for riding in the woods and falling off, so that doesn’t really matter. Made for 140mm forks, but you’d be fine on 130mm – I’m using some old 130mm Manitou Minutes for now.

We’re going with The White Room http://www.whiteroomchalet.com/sumintro.htm and it’s costing us £350 each for guiding and all the food and beer we can eat/drink included. £100 for flights (they pick you up) and you’ve got a good week in the Tarantaise Valley (Les Arcs, etc.) for £450.

    Can’t wait!

On my way home tonight I came down a long steep road section so pulled the rear brake and looked at the stay for a wee while. And guess what? Solid as a rock, no bowing at all so I don’t really know what BikeDoodar are on about. And as for snappage, Cy is a lot bigger than me and prolly rides a damn site harder and faster too and that’s good enough for me.

Suffice to say I love my Hemlock.

I love mine and it was one of the mediums that didn’t get the washer at the factory, so they replaced it under warranty. I’ve never felt any bowing when braking either, but maybe I’m not ‘core enough!

If I ever needed a paint job I reckon I’d go pink and blue, you know, like those old 90’s KHS Montanas. They were ace.

    Friday – July
Saturday – W2 with a spot of lunch half way
Sunday – Whites again but include the loop of the black route or Penhydd

W2 is a cracking route with great views on the link that goes past the windmills.

OTP do weeks in Zermatt. We went with them a couple of years ago and we had Stuart and Chris as guides who were both excellent. We did 3 days in Zermatt – 1 day on each of Gronergrat, Schwatzee and Rothorn – and then 2 days down the valley about 30 miles or so.

I know how to do it, I was just wondering if people used thicker walled tyres at all. Anyway, I’ve order 2 UST folding High Rollers instead to get a thicker wall but same weight as my wire single plys.

Just the regular single ply High Rollers.

A mate of mine uses Levis Twisted. He gets his DH pads under them and I think the twisted seam helps to keep them relatively unbaggy so they don’t get caught but wide enough at the knee for pads. They don’t do ’em anymore so you’ll need to look on eBay.

If you just mean a hardtail with 5 inch forks, then that’s most of the ones people ride these days and they’re great fun at trail centres. If you mean some burly thing with 160mm forks then it might be a bit weighty for hoiking up the hills, but fun back down again.

I never liked my Nevegals – seemed to be too round in profile for me. I like my Rampages though. A bit squarer and roll incredibly well.

dont all shrader valves have a removable core?

But my rims are drilled for presta and I don’t fancy taking a drill to them.

So, any presta valved tubes with removable cores?

I’m liking the idea of removable cores. That’ll make it much easier to load up the gunk.

As Vortex says, 10psi (or a little less) more in the -ve than the +ve and with the Motion Control fully on (the little knurled knob, not the big blue one) you’ll have a supple fork that doesn’t dive under braking.

Just to try out different bikes. One day I’ll come to the conclusion that it’ll never get better than the one I had 5 bikes ago or whatever, then I’ll settle on that. Probably.

    Those Lapierres look good…

nukeproof – the Talas 32’s with 150mm travel are on loan from Dirt magazine. Not sure when they want them back though…hopefully not until after my Alps trip in June!

Wish I’d seen this thread a month ago…

There’s a big difference in feel between the long and short travel. Short feels quite firm and good to pump, long feels like most other longer travel bikes with a fairly linear feel. I was running mine with Pikes, but now have the new Fox Talas 32’s but in 150mm guise and they’re awesome for the bike. I mostly use the short travel rockers and can then go 110 – 130 – 150 on the front with the forks.

I love mine, but when your setting the cable length for your rear mech make sure you use the long rockers to set the size. I made it fit nice and snug with the 120mm rockers and when it came to trying out the 150 rockers a couple of weeks ago it was too short. D’Oh!!

I asked them yesterday and they said that it was just some random chick that they happened on when out riding. God knows how they got into that situation though.
