I’ve since done a couple of Audaxes that have websites, map and gps downloads. No marshalls, cost £5, and when we got to the finish we were refunded £1.50 because they hadn’t provided “free” tea and cakes.

    £28 = pure greed.

On a 100 mile course? Where do you think all these marshals will come from? Regardless of ticket price, being able to mobilise a small army of folks willing to give up their day to stand on a grass verge in a tabard, is not always a possibility for an organiser.

1600 entries at £28 a go. Just short of £45,000

Pay the marshalls to do the job.

what were the problems last year?

Several of the waymarkers were pinched, and loads of people got lost. I emailed the organiser after and he didn’t really seem to think it was his fault. Sort of $hit happens attitude. Oh, and apparently the same happened with the waymarkers the year before.

Considering the number of entrants and the ticket price, a marshall on every corner wouldn’t have been a bad idea if it had happened before.

Or is it all about maximum profit for the least possible effort?

He’ll never see another penny of my money.

    you doing it Rich?

Nope. Did it last year. Organisation considering the entry price was shabby.

Let’s hope the waymarkers don’t get pinched this year.

What’s a chop route? *noob alert*

A difficult route with little or no protection, where a fall would mean the end.

    richpips

Indeed not. But somehow the “conversations” are slightly more engaging on here!

More engaging on Twitter imo, as you can choose exactly who you wish to interact with.

    Yeah, Twitter is quite pathetic.

No more pathetic than posting on here eh?

    You’ll be pushing/carrying your bike a lot.

think that may be a little upsetting if well intended

Don’t be upset. IM unfortunate E the easy routes are the ones who take the casualties. :(

doing laps on easy extremes to impress punters on polished classics is a little passe

Indeed the chop routes are best.

Or if you can shoot in RAW format, you need just one image.

Yes, you can do a faux HDR using one image, but it will not have the dynamic range of a HDR image created using 3 shots with different exposures.

    richpips

    what software are you using?

    Photomatix

    richpips
    Free Member

HDR, and image with a high dynamic range, is usually a combination of 3 or more shots taken at different exposures.

    Eg 1 @ EV 0, 1@ EV -2, 1 @ EV +2.

Combine the three and you can pick out the light and dark bits that you want.

    Here for more info.

@theginjaninja Did you have to climb a tree?

I smoked for years raced etc, stopped for 3 years, and have since started again.

I can’t say I found much improvement in speed or stamina for riding, or running when a non smoker.

I did put on weight, which since I’ve started smoking again has gone.

See smoking isn’t all bad.

A Canon 20D or 30D for £200 and £300 respectively second hand. Another £200 for a second hand reasonable lens.

To get the best from any camera, she’ll need to learn how they work though.

I’d suggestt getting a book on the basics of ISO, shutter speed and aperture too.

Then you’re lazy and don’t try hard enough on your geared

It weighs nearly 7 lbs more. Or it did. I sold it.

    richpips

Yeah but how fast would you have been on a geared bike? Nonsense argument. Do two laps of a trail centre (Cwmcarn ideally) and compare times. That data I’d like to see.

Cwm Carn, I couldn’t tell you. Llandegla, Penmachno, Marin, Glentress, nothing much in it.

I will concede that something rocky and technical like Cavedale, Garburn Pass, The Beast etc I’ve been a bit slower down. Though I’m usually quicker up hills than when on a geared bike. So not much in it for me on a day out.

Anyway, it’s a well known fact that crap riders actually go and buy an expensive bike, with lots of gears including the all important 34 rear sprocket, suspension (lots of it) wide sticky tyres, to mask the fact they’re rubbish at going up hill and down too.

When reduced to walking there are a plethora of parts on said bike that they can point to and claim that the setup of said part is not actually suitable for the current terrain conditions, otherwise we wouldn’t be waiting for them (again).

Whatever. People ride races/events/trail centres whatever as they cant read maps and go exploring, for fear of the unknown.

    Yeah sure.

For example; a rigid singlespeed is never going to be any good as a mountain bike

Really? I managed a few top 20 solo places on my fixie at MM and SITS.

It’s easy to prepare for riding round in circles for 24 hrs.

What takes some getting your head round, is finding that all that training for riding counts for little when you are pushing / dragging your bike through the mud. IME bad conditions under the wheel count for more retirements than the weather.
