It's a camera that fits in a jacket pocket.

but is the reason for the slow shutter the focussing or because they couldn't be arsed ? Can it be avoided by manual focussing ? [/quote]

Wtf relevance has your partial quote from what I wrote got to do with your statement below it?

    Slow shutter 1/4000 ?

Slow focussing, never noticed such a thing. I can find fault with a 5dMk2 for servo focussing if I must. Yet as I said previously know your camera.

If it was shit I'd have put it the GF1 on ebay within the week, which is exactly what I did with my G9.

Shutter lag long compared to an SLR (but good compared to a compact)

eeeek I suppose this is down to the contrast detect focussing ? Otherwise it seems inexcusable!

    Yawn. It isn't a (D)SLR. It's a camera that fits in a jacket pocket.

Any camara has limitations. A photographer quickly learns what they are and works with them. Having used a G7 G9 G10 I can say the GF1 is streets ahead of those.

A camera able of taking an action cover shot. ;)

If someone can show me how to take shots of shots of riders, where the background is all blurred and the rider is in sharp focus, then I'll be a happy chappy!

Sure no problem, there's a few coming who can do that.

("a bit rubbish" isn't really fair)

No, that's a fair assesment. In good light at f8 it might do OK, but stopped down it's poo.

Interestingly when I was considering my purchase, I don't recall reading a negative review on MTBR or elsewhere. Quite unusual.

My camera rucksack is a LowePro, but tbh as I said if you want to be low profile, a but of bubble wrap and a cheaper rucksack does the job. My LowePro AW weighs 2.5Kg before anything goes inside it.

If that's all you're carrying just take a normal rucksack. Oh, and if you want to say look at me I've got some flash camera gear, Crumpler is the name to go for. Can't understand why none of their bags have a tripod carrying system. Posy shite.

On a budget the Canon 17-85mm IS is a good lens. I've tried a few Sigma lenses and with the exception of the 10-20mm possibly I wouldn't bother with them.

I've got Chipps Fargo on loan at the moment. It's a great bike, but not one I would want for just doing road stuff. Tis quite heavy. A bike that come into it's own on the rougher stuff and laden down. Not a bike for doing fast touring miles on the road.

Its all about the lighting in the photo. The source of light comes from the front and yet it hasnt created any shadow.

It doesn't come from the front, there are two lights which come from above.

What are peoples thoughts on AF-tracking or face detection for taking mountain bike pictures? Do they work are are just too slow?

Pre focus by half pressing the shutter.

I think the parent shouuld also wear a wrist tag.

When the child moves out of range because the parent is too lazy to keep an eye on said child, the parent's wristband administers a tazer like discharge.

I was out yeterday a couple of mile from Rushup and lower down, and there are still 3ft drifts in some places. You'll be pushing in parts if you go up high for sure.

I spent some time running a bike hire/skills/guiding service in the Peak District.

Skills yes – lots, guiding no – very little.

You can download route guides on the internet in gpx pdf etc for little or nothing, or of course buy a guidebook to the area. 99% of people will take a chance on their crap navigational abilities vs paying you a days wages.

If your budget is £500 I'd suggest a 40d bigger and betterer than the 35Od, which with the 50mm you should just get for that money.

    A 2nd hand 350D and 1.8 50mm together will cost you nearer £250.

Cycling and Swimming are the two things that you are always going to be limited by your physical makeup. Realistically if you can't do well above average without coaching, you are unlikely to be one of the best with it.

As I said elsewhere, go for the photography. You've taken some well above average shots already, and I'm sure you could do better with a bit more application.
