With the bolts undone, Ive used spark plug gauges between pads and disc as spacers.

Apply brake, then tighten the bolts.

    Gets the alignment spot on.

My lap 1 man said that there were bottlenecks even with the long run.

    Maybe it’ll be 3.5K next year. :)

Short run = Everyone hitting the singletrack together resulting in most people pushing their bike round a good deal of the first lap due to congestion.

You don’t have to run, and some didn’t.

No pics, but tip the single seat forward and you’ll get any size bike in bar a Penny farthing with the wheels on, in fact you’ll have to wedge a single bike so it doean’t roll about.

    Today 2 adult bikes a 20″ a 24″ bike and 4 peeps + camping gear.

    Wheels off though.:)

BWD don’t mention GPS in a discussion about TQ or orienteering.

They think they’re the devils work.

Interesting the Atitude of some TQ riders that has been mentioned by other posters.

Go look at this thread via Graham’s id website, and feel the love

Oh, and yesterday my mate going uphill at a TQ was taken out by some knob bowling down hill far faster than he was able to stop. She was going ~3 miles an hour and her bike landed over a hedge a way behind her.

He and the rider who followed closely after apparently seemed more interested in “getting on” rather than checking my mate was OK.

    Nice.

    PS. She still won though.

The rain is starting to fall on the tents here at Mountain Mayhem, might sound worse than it is. We will have updates in the morning.

Get your miles in on long hills if you can before you go. The climbs go on and on and on.

Take a bike that’s (relatively) comfortable to carry, the Pas de Lona is a long carry.

No technical riding to speak of.

    Enjoy, it’s a great event.

Ton: HeHe, I’ve been riding my bike and running.

Got visiting rights for the evening, but my sober STW probation officer in the morning will tell me my time is better spent out there.

Over your way in August for a couple of weeks, lets ride and drink beer if I don’t see ya before

But if it takes place on public bridleways I thought it wasn’t allowed to be called a race…

    Don’t be a pedant.

There are lots of races/challenges whatever that use bridleways/footpaths.

You can race most places ecept SSSI maybe with landowner consent.

But thats the thing with Trailquests – they can be what you want them to be. They can just add a competitive element to a ride, or be a flat-out blast.

Want to do the singletrack routes, then fine!
Want to take the road and be quicker, then fine!
Want to stop and have lunch at a pub then fine!

I should add that if you are doing it competitively then there’s nothing sedate about Trailquests, especially if you are 5 miles from base and have only 15 minutes to get back within the time limit!

Well a TQ is advertised as a race.

Attracting new people (mountain bikers) to a TQ would rely on gnarr riding route choices (bonus points), beer stops (bonus points), pie stops (double bonus points) + fairly easy navigation.

That might sound flippant, but if you are wanting to attract new blood, maybe a parallel event with the emphasis on the riding/vibe rather than the nav would in time bring more interest to trailquests.

    Oh, and one other thing.

(Not one of your events), but I went for a ride yesterday with a friend who is competing well in our local series to get a feel for an event’s location.

The map geek might have revelled in route choice, and I’m sure there will be plenty, but in 4 hours riding, I didn’t find a trail I would have chosen to have ridden.

    Rubbish riding.

To do a Trailquest you need to be able to read a map well.

Trailquests are not sociable events. You usually spend most of the event on your own.

So, you’re on your own and you aren’t very good with a map, how much fun is that?

Instead you can enter a variety of events which are waymarked, and you can ride round with your mates.

Back in the day when the Polaris was young, it attracted lots of riders, and sold out. There were very few other events that vied for riders, plus I guess that most riders back then had an outdoors (map reading) background.

We camped last time, too far out of town to be sociable, and will mean getting up even earlier on Sun morning.

If not for work I’d happily use the GF1 as my only camera.

One thing you’ll not find on DSLR’s without Pocketwizards is 2nd curtain remote flash. ie it sends the flash trigger signal as the shutter closes, using any cheapy trigger.

Meant to say try to keep the camera WARM in between shots, as it’ll improve battery life.

Keep your camera warm, and everytime you take it out you’ll get condensation on the lens (and most likely the inside gubbins)

    Bridge Camera
    Pros – Pocketable
Cons image quality at higher ISO, and shutter lag if you’re shooting action.

    DSLR
Pros – Once you learn how it works, the higher models will use similar menus/controls.
    Cons – Bulk and weight.

When asked about our neighbours, my lad says Lucy is dead (true, empty house now), and Sheila is deaf.

TBH she may be dead too, I only hear anything from her house when her grandkids visit.

The most mine have done in a day (5 and 8 ) is 34 miles.

Over the summer I guess they were doing 60 miles a week.
