……There were some steep road climbs……

I’m hoping whatever we decide, it will be traffic free. Though if we use the High Peak Trail south there is a main road crossing.

Ok folks, I have a plan of sorts and the ride will be based on the Tissington trail.

For those who don’t know it, it’s an old railway which is slightly downhill as you head south. No technical skills needed.

Most kids should be happy riding the uphill bits, and I know that the surface is suitable for towing a trailer.

Park up at Parsley Hey (Snack Bar).

Various options from there stamina dependant.

Out and back to Tissington snack bar for little ones(least steep section of the trail 1:263 iirc) 20 miles.

S on High Peak trail past Minniglow then towards Biggin, left to Tissington then back up Tissington Trail. ~26 miles

Have a scan of the map and let me know what you think.

I did it with some friends in the middle of summer over two days. Starting in Keswick, stopping in lots of cafes on the way round. Beer food and bed in Coniston, then back to Keswick.

    Great fun.

Oh and I rode from Scarborough to Keswick with panniers the day before if you’re thinking I’m nesh.

Probably the only three days I recall when we had sunshine last year.

What’s the preceding segment, looks like most people are entering the segment fast.

Looks interesting, 174 miles a day.

How do you go about training for this?

Long back to back days in the saddle interspersed by very little uncomfortable sleep.

I was considering it. Then changed my mind.

Good luck, and make sure yo do plenty of training.

    You want too bright. http://store.dinottelighting.com/300r-red-taillight-with-built-in-battery-p111.aspx

I’ve got the 140 lumen version and that is bright.

One of the very few races I return to.

Always a challenge even if the weather plays nice.

I’ve not listened to it, but hopefully it does the trick.

They’re good because the rubber mounting strap goes anywhere, they’re possibly too bright and they’re USB chargeable.

The weak point is the rubber bung for the USB port. Moisture will get in but I had been using my first light without mud guards so the water was being thrown directly up onto its underside which is where the USB port is located. The light basically needs this port to be behind a more watertight screw-on lid or something.
The charge lasts about a couple of hours. Enough for two days worth of commutes in my case but can easily be charged at work.

Those USB covers ports are a bit naff granted, but I rode 34 hours the other week with mine last week, and it lashed down for most of that time. They still work fine.

No way they are too bright.

I’d avoid the BW below Kinder Low End and the drop down to the res.

I ran that way last night and it was sodden.

Remembers the day when we rolled up at a trail centre on cross bikes to banter from the padded up full susser lads. “You’ll never get round here on those”

We set off they’re lot and ours together and our party stopped at the cafe half way round.

We saw the full susser lad’s cars back in the car park but didn’t see them enroute.

    Skillz and fitness innit?

    I’m a Lumix fan, have a LX3 with a Leica lens which I think cost ~100 SH
newer models with better low light capabilities – LX5 LX7

The Canons s90 s100 are good.

A compact and loads of megapixels don’t necessarily make a better camera.

Sony RX100 is the best pocketable compact atm twice your budget though.

I’ll look at the map tomorrow, but given the min ages so far one of the trails as Rogerthecat suggested with an optional bit of the PBW maybe.

The Tissington is particularly child friendly, my lad rode there when he was 5. Cafes and very slight gradients.

    Hi Glenn :)

I had it 20 years ago.

Not a clue what caused it, but eventually it cleared up on its own.

I was told back then that veg and roughage was the way forward, I found that the opposite was the case.

If you’re going to race cross you’ll want something lighter than a Peregrine.

I love mine, but it’s too heavy to carry far.

What sort of distance / terrain ?
My lads are 5 & 7. Thinking of the youngest really, he’s probably still going to be on a Cnoc14.
Soon to have his brothers Beinn20 but older brother not quite ready for his 12″ Hotrock26.

Mileage and route no idea yet.

If we get enough interest there could be a long and a short option.

distance and age of kids ??

Distance not thought yet. Maybe 4-5 hours at a nice steady pace with cafe stop.

    My lad is 7.

It is NOT going to be a race

They feel OK. Swisstop pads too.

I’m not heavy though so never had problems stopping with any brakes.

Good to see no negative impact since the overturn. Further down is worse and the drainage ditches are starting to break up.

That bit has always been like that. They’ve never improved that section.

The bits which will get messed up are the steep bits.

Top of Dirtlow Rake, mahoosive headwinds and rain almost, just for a split second, made me think gears could be a good idea <shudders>!!!

Did not see any other riders on the tops, saw a couple of other riders in the Woodbine later, including a very chatty roadie with his lad. The lad was about 10 with waterproof trousers, a big yellow kag and yellow marigold gloves to keep his hands dry. They had just ridden over Snake Pass and were heading back up the broken road then along Rushup – brilliant to see him getting out there and riding.

Nice to meet you. Those marigolds do the trick though.
