cbrsyd has it covered from the ‘sensible’ angle – but who wants to be sensible. I ride a bike and I’d love a shot on the of those, together with a go in a Grinnel Scorpion, a proper trike, a Morgan 3 wheeler and one of those Carver things.

Vive le difference – as the French may or may not say!

Would try that Cougar but no distinguishing marks. From trawling around a bit I reckon a factory in china just churns out thousands of generic remote controls

Proposal sounds bad news to me. Another piece of what we own being sold off so someone can charge us to use it and get richer off it.

    I’m with this fella.

Allan MacKenzie, secretary of the Forestry Commission Trade Unions, said: “We will oppose any land sale. Once we’ve sold it, it never comes back.
“Once it is sold restrictions are placed on the land which means the public don’t get the same access to the land and facilities that are provided by the public forest estate.
“The current system means a vast amount of people can enjoy forests and feel ownership of them. It is an integral part of society.”

I’m just reading Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine – which makes interesting reading in the current circumstances. Makes you realise that NeoCons wait for a good crisis and then rather than having to develop a plan, they can reach onto the shelf and dust off ‘The Big Boy’s Book of Milton Friedman’ and set about dismantling the public sector and privatising it. If you think about the language being used it’s clear that the current crisis is allowing them to go far further in this tgN they would be able to otherwise.

Oh and as noted above – it’s unlikely to work but no one seems to worry about that.

Rather than dwelling on the fairness or not of the ‘solution’ – how about whether it will work or not?

Paul Krugman in the New York Times says it won’t.

Or am I being a bike snob and would little lad be as happy with an Apollo Firechief from Halfords for £60 this weekend?

Had Vanilla Ice really got Wide Open tattooed on his knuckles? I didn’t know he moved in the same circles as Barrymore?

Mefster – what balance bike did you get. Saw one in Halfords last week which is huge – can’t work out what age it is pitched at. My little lad started on a Rothan and is doing well. We just ride on local pavements – he has a few crashes but usually dusts himself off and gets on again. Would like to get him a cnoc next and see if he can get pedalling without stabilisers.

I’ve been considering some bull horns on my Rat but wouldn’t want to lose my hydro discs. Will have to see if I can find some in mtb dia.

I’m with Will.I.am on this one. A truly hard nosed approach by the bike shop would have been to appreciate the long term value of the OPs custom and to do the job FOC – what they did was pennywise, pound foolish IMHO.

An LBS near me charged me something daft for 3 or 4 cable crimps after their initial cock up caused me a repeat visit – you could tell the Saturday boy thought he was Donald Trump as he rang up the sale but did’t appreciate he’d cost the owner a few grand from me in future sales

Threads like these which include workshop costs are always a bit of an eye opener to me. I appreciate that shops are not charities and need to make a profit but ten quid to change a cassette is a bit salty – that is a two minute job.

TJ – fair enough but it would save coppers messing about looking for big houses/warehouses with big leccy bills and one, usually vietnamese, chap on the electoral register!

While you’re at it legalise heroin too. The ‘war on drugs’ is an exercise in stupidity. Was it Einstein that said that madness was doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result?

Legalise, tax it like fags and sell it like fags. 18 age limit. Would alleviate a shit load of crime/wasted police effort and contribute towards reducing the deficit

Switch mine off whenever not in use. Bit odd if you want to watch it and can’t wander across to switch it on before sitting down on sofa. Do all of you that have yours on standby have Jimmy Saville chairs with built in teasmaid for when you fancy a brew?

    [*] singlespeeds
    9 speed cassettes
    Hard tails
    Risers
    Flat bars
    Rigid bikes
    Sussers

Not sure about the nature of the troll but on face value – assuming you’re shaving your face? – then gillete gel and the 5 blade gillete razor will sort you out.

I wouldn’t ‘teach’ him, I’d just incorporate new features into your rides – curbs, bollards etc and give him chance to ride them

Bought a roadrat that came singlespeed with intention of changing to 1 x 9 and never bothered changing. I can’t justify having more than one mtb and I can’t envisage a time when that won’t be a geared hardtail.

Tag outlet at MacArthur Glen in York or Bicester? Otherwise go into jewellers with your bargaining trousers on. Jeweller should move on price of a Tag

I was talking to my wife about the difficulty of producing a monthly magazine the other day. For most subjects – bikes, cars, relationships, s3x advice, interior design or whatever, everything that can be written has been written. Each month is essentially a rehash with, in the case of biking (and may the other categories) some showcasing of new technology offering increasingly diminishing improvements.

I’m not dissing writers and publishers, quite the opposite as trying to keep recycled stuff feeling fresh must be a he’ll of a challenge but it does explain why I no longer subscribe to magazines

My thought was an S3 would be worth a look. I test drove one and found it fast but a bit uninvolving – though I was driving a DC2 Integra Type-R at that time and everything was a bit dull in comparison.

That’s right Chris. If you click on them it brings up ‘front’ and ‘rear’ in description. Front one will work with a SRAM or Shimano mech. Rear is for SRAM only

They should nationalise M6 toll road too and price it as if they understood elasticity of demand – dopy Aussies running it at the moment keep bumping prices up and wonder why no one uses it

    richcc

Definitely renationalise. Current system is a nonsense. Worst example of this I’ve heard recently was something where a couple were fined for getting off their train a couple of stops earlier! Whatever happened to the idea of travelling by any reasonable route?

How far’s your commute? On road, off road? Tell us about your ‘weekend jaunts’? Drop bars or flat?

Throw us a bone and you might get some suggestions

Now, based on no info at all I’d get a Kona Sutra
