Maybe the right size as I am a giant 5″6 but wrong seat tube diameter. Shame.

All of a sudden theres so many to chose from!!

I’m going to try a 5 as even though my comments earlier about not getting excited about them are kind of still true I have been doing some research and am a bit keener now (iscg tabs, rear maxle 30.9mm st diameter) and all my Heckler bits will be perfect for it. The only thing putting me off a 4X is that it would have to be 2nd hand and could be pretty well used!

I read somewhere that the TRC is the new 4x. It does look amazing but I’m old fashioned and would be worried about the carbon fibreness of it. Not that it would break as such but that I would damage it!! I would still think the same on the Carbon V10….

I want that Foes 4x more than anything! Do you know how it would take a double chain ring up front and how it would be on general trail bits?

Maybe a 5 would fit the bill but for whatever reason they just don’t do it for me! Maybe I should try one out and see if I can overcome my disinterest in them.

    Thanks for the replies.

AS its too miserable to ride today I have been thinking on it more and have decided to look for something 4″-5″ that can take 140mm to 160mm (incase I do change forks) something that go up and then down much quicker?

I don’t want a mini DH bike as I have a 224 for DH duties. I basically want a shorter travel Heckler for misbehaving on. What is this bike I’m after!

I’m not a yeti fan, I’m sure they a good bikes but I don’t really want one!

Is there a modern equivalent of the Blur 4X?

I did the same on my Bullit too. It was pretty decent at climbing up xc style stuff with 2 rings upfront.

I watched a pal ride his 224 relatively successfully on the trail from Les Gets to Morzine, it is pretty steep in sections. It wasn,t pretty but he managed it. I would have got off and pushed, theres no shame in that!

I’m in the same position regarding a laptop but was looking to spend nearer £400.
The main reason I want t new laptop is to edit videos from my gopro (not HD but ideally the laptop could handle DH vid editting).
What should I be looking for? Its probably something to do with video and graphics cards?!

I should have said I don’t really want a mac! Well i would like one if I could afford a new one but I can’t and don’t want a 2nd hand one.

Has anyone tried one of the Giant contact Switch (or switch contact) posts? I want a dropper post but am waiting on opinions or feedback on one of those before committing to anything!

I just got a hand me down fiat panda and its ace! I got a roofrack and bike carriers for it, you can fit a couple of bikes in the back plus kit.

Its good on fuel, got 5 doors, cheap to insure and much better than my old astra estate. Maybe I would have thought of buying it myself but to honest I love it!

I am just finishing the Last Argument of kings triology by Joe Abercrombie and I enjoyed them a lot! Daft but funny.

Also read Rivers of London by Ben Aarovitch (or something similar) and thats was good too. However I did get a b it confused towards then end but I tend to read a lot, put it down for a few days, read a bit more etc….may have lost the thread a bit!

The 15″ will see you up to just over 6ft. I only got it the other day but got an offer on something else and I bought that too!

I had a bullit before it and it was a great bike but on steep technical stuff I didn’t get on with (there is a lot of that in north wales where I live). I had a go on a pals 224 and loved it.

Any questions feel free to ask.

If you want a bike to ride proper DH courses then I would recommend getting a dedicated bike for it. It can be very expensive to convert your exisiting trail bike into something which would resemble a DH bike plus you will probably make it a right pain to ride regular trails on.

Specialized Demo 8s are really nice, as are giant glories and 224s. Depends on your budget really. I built mine up frm second hand bits but again thats not always the cheapest way either. I have an orange 224 + wheelset and few bits for sale if you are interested in one of them.

Its not too bad to get to champery from Morzine and les gets, just take the route mentioned above. Plus you can ride the old swiss national down into switzerland which is worth the trip alone!

I’m after a 135mm rear on something like a mavic 721 for a DH build. If I can find something like that then I would be interested in the conversion kit!

Bangor is a bit rubbish but North Wales has everything you could ever want! Mountains, forests and beaches within a tiny distance! I can’t think of a better place to be really.

It was an option to buy a cheap frame with a hairline crack in a weld but after the advice here I went for a less cheap but hopefully uncracked one!

I think for piece of mind that it probably was a better option!

I would definately send it to a someone with the tools and all the skills necessary. Does anyone know how much the work could cost? Also Has anyone ever had to buy a new front end for a 224? If so how much?

Shame you aren’t looking for 1.5″ tubed’d ones as I am selling then and my Bullit frame (2008 in small incase anyone is interested)! THey are brilliant forks though, super reliable and never seem to get out of their depth. Spoke to a tech in TFTuned prior to buying them as I was considering 66s and he said hands down Totems.

Thanks for the input! I think I may just swap the frame for a full DH one in the near future. I think something lower and longer may be just what I need as opposed to tinkering with the angles on my current bike.

Anybody interested in a Bullit frame and some Totems…..?

Well I have ordered a 2 degree adjuster headset and will give it a good go, just wondering if it would be trying to make it into something it isn’t.

My pal has a 224 so I will research by riding his til he sells it to me for cheap!

I do a hilly 9 mile ish each way commute most days on my hardtail. The only change I made was a cheap set of wheels and put some slicks on them, It makes it much easier and faster. I’m sure a dedicated road bike would be a bit better but I didn’t think there was much point just for commuting.

I haven’t noticed excessive pad wear and the discs and slicks combo is pretty good!

For carrying stuff I just use a rucksack as I can shower and change at work. I have never really bothered with mud guards either but I’m sure they would be useful on some of the lanes.

I think the main reasons I use my mtb is that I find it very comfy, I know how it handles and it has saved me a lot of cash over buying a new bike!

I had the same dillema as the OP. I took my Heckler to the Alps and decided I wanted to get something bigger so instead of spending a lot on my heckler to make it into a mini DH bike I bought a Bullit Frame and built it up for DH duties. This way I can still use my heckler as a trail bike and the bullit for DH.

I figured it wasn’t the right thing to do to spend a significant amount of cash on changing my heckler from a really nice trail bike into something which wasn’t a great DH bike and probably a lot less fun on regular UK trials.

If you are swapping from heckler frame to a new longer travel FR/DH one it is likely that you will need new forks and maybe a 150mm rear wheel which all add up to a fair bit of money.

If I was you I’d do what mike and steve suggest and scour DH forums for a complete older DH bike. It may cost a bit more intially but If you don’t like it you can sell it on without having to mess round with your current bike.

Something like the stinky above or a 222/223/ Giant Glory or Faith can be found for ok money if you are lucky.

I will look into the Nitomors. The beams aren’t in the ceiling so there isn’t any overhead working. I can only assume that thre are several layers of the paint, does nitromors effectively remove multiple layers?

I would love to pay someone to sandblast it but this redecorating lark has cost too much alread!

Thanks for that, I have managed to find a few more bits on youtbe too!

To be honest the picture looks pretty decent, I was expecting a lot worse. Plus the 960 is about £140 cheaper than the 1080!
