I was thinking of replacing the Elixir 5s on my HT, are these shimano ones a better bet?

I loved my Heckler, it was a great bike. I had decided to change it for a 5 unitl a pal mentioned a Remedy. I got the remedy and haven’t looked back. The Heckler is short for its size so I always struggled a bit the steeper technical climbs. It was a great descender though and very tough. Plus its much much cheaper than a new 5.

~It is expensive but I figured it cost the same for a shop to do the job. So by buying the tool (or any suitable tool) and using it a few times I am actually saving money. It was useful when I had 3 set of bearings go in quick succession too.

Plus spending £40 or whatever on a tool and not making a mess of your frame is worth it. I nearly learned that the hard way!!

Very carefully. I once left the bearing outer in the frame. That wasn’t a good day. Then I bought the removal tool from Jungle and its it so very easy!

On my old heckler frame I had 3 set of bearings that lasted about 3 months each. It is disappointing and I could’t work out why they weren’t lasting. The set that came on the new frame lasted at least a year!

If there is play in the swing arm I reckon its broken bearings. I bought the bearing tools to remove and fit them myself in the end as its just quicker than getting the shop to do it.

I went from V2s to XT and am very happy. They are a different style of brake. As mentioned above the power comes immediately and I like that. It may not be for everyone though.

The only thing I am struggling with is getting used to the XT lever shape. Coming from my old Tech V2s and the Moto V2s on my DH bike the lever is so short I have not managed to get it in the right position on the bar yet. This is my fault, not the brakes. The brakes are great. the V2s are also great.

Good answer B R if it was only that simple. It should read Drive train.

Its a great place to go. DEfinately worth a 3.5hr drive.

It has got something for everyone but it is a DH course not a trail centre. The trails are set to be built soon. I saw group of older gentlemen riding down the blues and reds on what looked like supermarket special bikes. They were having fun and were happy to make space for faster riders. Good times had by all.

I take my 224 there and am happy on that with armour and a full facer, I wouldn’t feel comfortable riding without some padding and a Full face helmet. Other are welcome to do what they like though.

I have a 456 evo and its flippin brilliant. I got it as a frame only deal but still its worth the 800 or whatever.

On a slight tangent up to what travel fork will an inbred take?

Call it dinner or teatime I still have to wait another 50mins for my free meal. After that I may try escaping. However I have just seen a video of the road to my house so I may not get far.

My reverb has been nothing but brilliant for a year. Only had to bleed it once after replacing the hose after a crash. Get one and you won’t regret it.

I have the regular Panda and its pretty good. It has roof rails so bikes go on the roof on a thule carrier. They will fit in the back with wheels off but its not that spacious. I can’t see why a saris bones won’t fit the back.

Me too! I ordered the M780. Whats the difference between M780 and M785 anyway? I am really happy with mine!

I had a pair of the 1.7 country, or something like that, on my commuter. I used them occasionally off road and for one CX race and considering they were only £8 each I thought they were pretty good. Mostly used on the road though but I would buy them again for the same duties.

Ok, that makes sense. They look identical to the M785 one otherwise? I don’t understand the price difference though! I’m very tempted.

on the merlin website they are disc brakes along with the m780.

Have you looked on southern downhill or pinkbike for other 2nd hand options? 1200 does seem a lot of money.

I bought dog soliders to try and cure myself of the fear of big scary monsters in the woods. It really didn’t work.

A tooth brush could definatley do the trick!I did give it a good dose of wd40 and then greased it up prior to installing the new BB but there was still a lot of resistance.

I couldn’t be without my ipod shuffle. Its been washed several times, gets dropped and rained on and its still going strong! I got the newer 2gb one (£35ish) and its the best music player I have ever owned!

I used Strava for thwe first time today and it seemed to work ok! It logged the ride to work. WHen I finished I pressed the finish ride button and the phone went about its buisness of saving the ride.

I checked the app about 30mins ago and its logged everything and ranked me on the various bits of the ride. I assume it has connected to to magical internet to do this? It didn’t connect to the wireless network in work so I think its used its own internet connection and part of my data allowance. In future how can I stop it from doing this until I get home and get on my house wifi (which will not count to the monthly usage bit)?

Its all very new and baffling to me!

I’m not entirely sure if that XCG is a chain retention device or just a chain ring protector. It may not do much in stopping your chain coming off.

I did the same as Jambon on my 456 evo. Works a treat since I never really used the big ring.

Can someone point me in the direction of a geometry table for the current El Guapo please? Google has not been very helpful!

How good are the El Guapos? I am not entirely sure I like the look of the frame but at that price………

Thanks for all the replies I have plenty to think about now. Also I’m a mere 5’6 so large bikes are out for me sorry.

I am still looking seriously at 5s, Remedys and now El guapos.

I have just come back from riding Cadair Idris for the first time today. It was great, went up from the Llanfihangel end. The climb was long but the descent was worth it. I would not want to do that and Snowdon in 1 day!

    Thanks for that,

I am off to NYA today and was hoping to get Mach on the way back tomorrow. Will try the shop as suggested.

Thanks for the tips, I should have said the bars I use are low rise MTB bars. The problem only started when I switched bars and stem a while ago on my previous bike. May put slightly higher rise bars and shorter stem on and see what happens.
