Lots of hidden routes, I’d just go up and get a bit lost, telegraph is a good trail to use as a landmark I find, mainly because it’s obvious which one it is and easy to find, and there’s a nice trail to the left of it that’s off camber and rooty, secret squirrel I think, great trails over at Leith and Pitch too. Pop into pedal and spoke shop and get a map.

I would do a component comparison, the focus and cube tend to be pretty well specc’d.

People in cars are effectively two abreast, so why shouldn’t cyclists be?

    You for real?

There was extra signage up there Friday from Devil’s Dyke > EB, didn’t stop me taking a wrong uphill bridlepath at Pyecombe.

enjoy the big bulls in the fields

You’re not kidding, a crazy calf went for me on friday evening on the climb above southease, luckily it ran on past down the hill, that couid of been embarrassing.

Seriously forget it if there’s a headwind of more than 10 miles – took me 5+ hours from Devils Dyke – Eastbourne in 20mph headwind – even downhill was slow – very hard, loved it though.

Did Devil’s Dyke – Eastbourne on friday evening, I had a strong head wind all the whole way, it was even stopping me on the steep decents, very hard work, it took an embarrassing amount of time, beautiful sunset over the downs though – I’ll take a camera next time.

Taken a half day – train down to brighton with the bike. Got a caravan in eastbourne, on the SDW a lot, and Friston. Happy days.

Very tempted, off to do Brighton – Eastbourne now. Thinking of doing Caterham – North Downs Way – Downs link – Brighton – Eastbourne.

The voiceover man was on TV (the One show I think) earlier this week, he’s never been sailing and can’t swim – the irony.

I did the same a while back in Brixton, the guy stopped me dead, he looked winded, then patted me on the back as if to say fair cop mate you got me fair and square then just walked off, very odd. I’ve also had kids playing chicken with me, not fun.

So what’s the steepest climb? The one at southease is pretty steep.

If you’re doing west to east save some legs for the last two hills, windover hill into jevington and then jevington up to eastbourne, I did them last weekend, steep, long and lots of loose flint. Have a tea and cake break in Alfriston.

Light HT would be perfect. Beautiful ride. If you’re in Eastbourne overnight I’d recommend dropping into Friston Forest too, some nice singletrack. And you must have a pint of Harvey’s Best, best beer in the world.

I’ve being doing some experimenting with gram flour, the chipatis are working best for me, the trick is to cook out the floury taste which I personally find a bit ming. I’m going to try with fried onions and nigella seeds next.

My mountainbiking will be over or slow at 55 years old

    No way, 65 maybe.

Just to add to the mix, I bought a bottom of range gary fisher as a family runaround bike, I’ve got my 3 year old on the back in a copilot, I’ve got to admit I wish I spent twice as much on something fairly decent, the frame and geometry are fine but the brakes, crankset, tyres, pedals, BB and forks are awful, the sound of the gear change is clunky and the metal even sounds cheap, the plastics look cheap, all the bolts and screws show signs of surface corrosion, to be honest it’s not an enjoyable ride, but it was under £400.

Give Royal a try, I’ve found most others a bit on the small size. Fox, Spesh, Oakley. Cyclesurgery have them.

I’d reserve your appraisal until you’ve used and abused it for while, IME cheaper bikes equal cheaper components which start wearing out pretty quickly.

Check out Purley, Riddlesdown, Fairleigh, Chelsham, Woldingham, Warlingham. Nice areas, great schools, great trains connections to London, Gatwick, Brighton. And some corking hilly trails, through ancient woods, endless bridle paths and the North Downs, lots for roadies too, famous Titsey Hill, Toys Hill, Limpsfield Chart etc etc etc.
