Yep, I really feel for you, I was there last summer, I had a severely displaced clavicle, so had plate and hook which they took out after six months. Watch the drugs though, can be addictive, and ease off the anti-inflams like nurofen, apparently not good for bone union. If you can stretch to it then go private, no waiting for xrays or surgery if you need it, if you’re that into your biking then it’s money worth spending. As far as how long for recovery it’s will take as long as it takes, don’t rush back on the bike if it hurts, and get pyshio. Collarbones heal really well so I’m sure confidence will come back as the memory of the accident fades, mine is starting to, maybe go back to the scene of the crime, just to understand what went wrong.

It’s more than likely for the sugar, there’s not that much caffeine in coke.

yes, all the time, biggest risk is the dreaded dogs egg.

I was told anti-inflamms aren’t good for fractures, the bone needs a good supply of blood to aid union.

no you cant unless you have really slow roadies

maybe, or I’m really fast 😉

I seem to recall a whyte bikes rider beat roadies on a mtb?

    EDIT: linky

On a good day I’m faster or can keep up with a lot of roadies, I’ve got a fairly heavy mtb with road tyres, the amount of roadies that almost kill themselves in a desperate attempt to pass or loose me is ridiculous. A bit more respect all round is needed me thinks.

I broke my scaphoid, it went undetected for months, by which time union was pretty unlikely, I’ve just had an operation to screw it together which also involved a bone graft. My advice is to get it xrayed asap.

WTF not? are you too embarrassed to practice these simple skills outside your own house? if so I find that quite sad (seems pretty normal around here though)

???????? of course not, I merely meant that time on the bike was automatically spent hitting the trails and putting the miles in, rather than just practicing skills.

i pick my nose and smoke the odd ciggy!

whilst riding downhill? now that’s a skill 😀

It’s good to get the pov of some instructors on here, I had one a couple of years ago, it was very useful, rather than hitting the ST we spent a lot of time doing basic bike control skills, track stands, endos, hops, manuals, seatpost position, foot position, stuff you don’t stop and practice yourself.

Mountain biking has become a bit of a fashion accessory.

Does it matter though, I think the whole world has woken up to cycling, that’s great, in fact that’s amazing.

Always enjoy watching hans rey pop his wheelies.

I’ve got to be honest I’ve been given it a another try lately, much easier since I got a shorter stem, I’ve found doing it on grass adds a bit of confidence, and barely moving with just a little touch of the back brake, can’t stay up for long and I’ve fallen on my back a few times, not funny when a gel explodes in your rucksack. Only doing it to impress my 7 yr old son.

Out of interest, where else in Surrey would you recommend for similar singletrack kind of stuff?

Ranmore Common, Box Hill, North Downs Way from Box Hill to Woldingham is a great ride, around Woldingham is some great ST too, drop into Marden Park, Limpsfield Chart. Believe it or not there’s some great riding south of Croydon if you know how to link up all the BP’s and put in XC miles.

@ njee20 – I referring to the usual dig at

middle management mountain bikers who have blown their bonus on a full face lid and something with 180mm travel.

Why is everyone so bitter, cheer up.

Edit. ….rides off on his brand new lapierre zesty 714 with easton haven carbon bar, stem and rims .

If you want real friction between groups, have a ride along SDW at weekend. The walkers are armed with poles!

I’ve been riding around Eastbourne end of SDW and Surrey Hills for years, all I’ve experienced is friendly walkers, runners, horse riders and bikers all enjoying the countryside. Use a bit of common sense, go when it’s not too busy, during the week you’ll have these places to yourself almost.

Chill out, slow down when it’s not safe for others, go fast when it is safe for others, smile and say hello.

The place is full of total morons (on all sides to keep things in perspective).

That’s not really keeping perspective is it? Life is too short for bike envy, there’s always going to be someone with a better or more expensive bike than you.

I test rode the Ti and Steel at the open day at their sussex workshop, both amazing bikes, the filet brazzed steel was a thing of beauty, super light too. Saw a demo of a build too, very interesting to see a frame being built. most definetly tempted.

Planning to build one myself, Ti or Steel? Test rode both, amazing bikes.

    Edit: sorry… not much help.

was I being petty expecting her to wait for me to cross?

A little, in those scenarios it’s best to wait for them to flash, I always assume they’re not going to stop.

As TJ says seek medical advice asap, I had a severe displaced clavicle, almost compound, I had a plate and hook fitted for 6 months, pretty painful but fine now it’s been removed. Non unions don’t sound good, wouldn’t the bone just die after time? I also had a non union scaphoid which is now grafted and screwed.

Luckily I was covered by a work private health plan,

Yes, it’s great, been very reliable for me, very easy to use pvr, plus I hear they’ve got HD multicast channels coming and the Youview service, for the money there’s no better service out there IMO. Unless you want the Sky HD channels that no one really watches. On Demand is all the latest box office films some same day as DVD release, plus loads of library films and TV content, the new BBC iPlayer service is great too, they’ve also got an Red Bull area with lots on biking docs eg: Atherton Project etc.

The climb out of Alfriston, just horrible after that many miles

Indeed, Windover Hill, is long, steep, chalky, flinty, windy, did I mention long? I wouldn’t walk it in spds, you could ride it though. I did it in 20mph + headwind the other week, I had to dig real deep.

Yep, very expensive per week. I bought one on a lovely quite site on the coast, use it from March to Oct, most weekends and three weeks in summer, my two young boys love it, works out good value for us in the long run, but to be honest though it’s not about the money.

I found Fartlek training good for building stamina – just google it and you’ll find plenty training plans, NIke actually did one specifically for the Nike 10k runs.

Same here, broken wrist and clavicle, I went back to the scene of the crime to try and work out what happened, I didn’t ride it, wrist not strong enough yet, but I will. My accident was a classic case of not knowing the terrain, it’s so important to check a trail out before you hit it flat out, even walk it if you must. I’m taking it easy for a while, concentrating on fitness and XC, which I’m really enjoying.

I have a very slow metabolism

Not being dramatic but I would get a blood test and get your thyroid checked, I have an under active thyroid which stopped me losing weight, now take thyroxin daily and my weights dropped.

I recommend giving idave a go though.
