Steer well clear unless you like modding forks – the TST2 ones can be opened up and have a shim stack added in place of some washers (prevents the spiking and hydraulic lock problems + makes them really tunable). That said I’m tempted to get a cheap 2nd hand pair just to play with.

13.5 stone and find the firm a little too soft, x-firm is about right. The MoCo damper offers enough adjustment for heavier riders without changing oil weight.

Check the hosts file for suspicious entries.

    Think it’s under %windir%/system 32/drivers/etc/hosts

Should probably just have a localhost entry unless you’ve changed it

What’s the problem? The update doesn’t install properly?

Retro83 – why not go to organic pads? They should be not porous, if my understanding is correct. So anything spilling on to them would get rubbed off and that would be that.

They are organic at the moment. I’ve just ordered some SSC pads to replace these with (stop laughing at the back!)

I left the levers pulled really hard with loads of laccy bands last night and this morning there was no trace of oil on the pistons.
Only thing I can think of at this point is that there is oil soaked in right through the pads and no amount of heating, sanding etc will ever sort them out.

Stick the bombers on as they are, they’re meant to clash!

Doh let me correct that again:

I couldn’t be arsed to wait for them to swap it again, *so I straightened it in a vice* and it’s been fine. It clunked and crunched when it was bent though.

rich-6 – Remove the spring, see if the shaft is straight*. I had two x-firms in a row from TFTuned which were bent half way down. I couldn’t be arsed to wait for them to swap it again, and it’s been fine. It clunked and crunched when it was bent though.

    * lay it on a flat surface and roll it.

Yeah exactly, this is what I can’t understand. It would surely take a fair amount to get on that bit of the pad, and the back should be all greasy – but it isn’t!

They have suggested its a leak!

But the calipers are always dry, I visually inspected them, then wiped them with kitchen roll and there was just a tiny bit of dirt on it after- couldn’t see any oily mark or anything.

Also, the level in the reservoir doesn’t seem to have dropped at all.

Just got home and checked the pads and they weren’t shiny this time, they look damp, but I can only assume this is oil.

Assuming you mean QR revs vs 20mm Pikes (not the 20mm revs) then yes there is a noticeable difference. I imagine that the 20mm Revs would feel identical to the Pikes.

Takisawa & retro83….what is the point of removing/cleaning brake components religiously. They don’t need it.
Retro83, IPA comes in various forms. Where I used to work we used it as a flushing solution and we had to get the highest grade possible to ensure that nothing was left behind. Perhaps low grade IPA leaves some kind of film on the rotor?

Only started cleaning them like this since I started having problems, I agree about the grades of IPA thing though, I think my is >99% pure from memory as it is for cleaning computer chips, but I will double check that. Perhaps the last 0.5% is pure teflon. :-)

Check calipers and check you haven’t got dot 5 in a dot 4 only system thats cocked things up over time (think thats the combination that leads to trouble that can eat away at things? someone?)

These run mineral oil, plus I can’t ever see any oil around the pistons and for it to get onto the pads/rotor there would have to be a reasonable amount leaking I would have thought. Seeing as the road oil thing seems to be a non-starter, I’ll have to have another good look at them (damned hydraulics – bring back Vs!).

Just had a thought. DO you have some crazy assed disks with your name engraved on them or something? it might explain the patchy wear on the pads and the noise and grabbing. It’d certainly explain why front and back have a problem.

Nope, sadly I’m just not that cool. I have an Avid 185 (with correct adapter) on the front, Shimano on the rear. Had the same problem with a shimano 160 on the front too.

Another possibility is that your wife has put a huge life insurance policy on you and is squirting oil on your disks at night. That’d be the first thing I’d check.

Wouldn’t be too surprised about that actually :?

retro83, you ever not bothered to clean the bike down, or touch the brakes in any way? Are they better if left alone?

Yeah that’s what I did originally. My fairly rigourous brake cleaning regime came about as a result of this problem. Also my understanding was that isoprop would be 100% safe to clean brake bits with. Is that not right?

Only bits that get cleaned are mud tide marks on suspension (using dry kitchen roll) and chain (removed from bike monthly or so and wiped down then lubed with finish line dry)

Cheers for the replies so far. Much appreciated.

The brakes are getting contaminated(/whatever) at both ends, but not always at the same time – some days its just the front, or just the back, other times both. Sometimes I go for a couple of weeks with no problems then it happens every day.

Setup is fine AFAIK but I’m not an expert on brakes! At least the pads are centred, pistons not overly sticky and I do clean them after muddy wet rides with isoprop (I remove the pads when doing this). Haven’t noticeced and leaks at all from the pistons.

I would say it’s the caliper not being set up correctly myself rather than contamination. I’d say that’s the main reason for brakes problems full stop but certainly in your case.

Have the brake mounts been faced? Has the caliper been aligned when setting up the spacing?

Pad contamination in my opinion and experience, is a complete load of bobbins, just like bedding brakes in is.

Mounts not faced admittedly, but I don’t understand how this would make the brakes go from powerful + really good to really howly and awful performance.

I only use isopropyl alcohol to clean them, no muc-off disc cleaner or anything.

Also, it’s not bobbins  try putting a dab of chain lube onto your pads.

Now he (or she) will say he rides to work through an oil refinery or something.

He – and no oil refinery, but I do notice the lovely rainbow coloured oil patterns on the road whenever it’s damp out. Don’t think it’d take a wild leap of imagination to see how it could end up on the rotors. :D

They look shiny in patches when I take them out, this is what I am sandpapering off.

Forgot to say as well, that the brakes are SLX only a couple of months old. Pads are currently SSC organics, had same problem with Shimano ones before hence their replacement.

Don’t think I’m losing fluid – they still feel solid anyway.

Every now and then, the laptop will make the ‘bong/beep’ noise that you get when connecting and disconnecting a USB device. It’ll do it constantly for about 3 or 4 minutes before stopping. This is with no USB devices plugged in at all.

Often when I shut the computer down, it turns off and then restarts, several times in a row.

These two sound like buggered hardware. Have you got the latest BIOS and firmware updates etc from your laptop manufacturer?

Is a Maxle 360? I’ve unseized one in the past by unscrewing little nut on disc side, then using a seat post as a lever on the end of the maxle handle.

I’m 5’11” and an 18 inch frame is already slightly too small …

I used to ride a 15 inch trials frame for a few years, great for flicking about but very uncomfortable for longer rides.

Let all the neg out, get the positive pressure roughly right in terms of sag, the set the neg to the same or very slightly higher than the pos.

I used to have one of those plates on my bike, but the chain kept getting stuck really badly in it. In the end I just replaced all the rings with better wearing ones and covered the stay with helicopter tape. Prevention was far more effective than cure in my case.

I think its a great new UI, but they should not have completely changed how windows works on a stable platform. Same with IE7 moving the menubar beneath the toolbar. Fine for vista, but really awkward feeling on XP.

After you get used to it, it is actually very efficient to use. Found it a joy to use for putting references and bibliography together for my dissertation last year.

Just ordered one from SBR sports but then read loads of dodgy things about them – will wait and see if it turns up.

Ordered running shoes and various other bits including an x-firm Pike spring, everything turned up except that. They said their supplier was out of stock.

I ended up ordering from TFTuned, and received two in a row with a bent shaft which wouldn’t fit in the forks properly, so I’m back on my firm for now :(

Just a computerised hazard perception test like young people will have done as part of their theory test would be a great start. I’m really worried about my grandad still being on the roads.
