Well, after a bit of hmming and harring I’ve vaguely followed the thread’s advice and bought doggycam’s 853 inbred.

They are great frames…with the exception of chainring clearance

Been riding a 2007 853 Inbred here since I bought it new. It’s been built up a few ways and is currently in the process of having drop bars fitted! I’ve had such good times with it I’ll always have it built up in some role.

@lambchop, good luck, I tried it for a month and am still going 5.5 years later. I was veggie for about 20 years before that though. The food is fine, dealing with other people gets tiresome though.

@malvernrider I’m such a vegan ‘dick’ I would have refused to buy you the sausage ;)

The thug kitchen book is good, for extra sport mention it on a vegan facebook group and watch someone get upset…actually don’t it’s best to stay off vegan facebook groups!

standard trp pads (that came in my spyres) seem to be made from potato, disco brakes sintered pads improved them massively

I geared it so the top gear (138%) was a niceish SS road ratio then used the direct drive gear as a hill gear (43:22 with 27″ wheels). Was just nice and simple and totally different. You need to be able to hear the hub to shift it as it makes quite a different freewheel noise in top than direct. It’s a bit of a heavy hub but I only noticed when I picked the bike up the weight was at the back. Unfortunately I sold the hub after I had the 5 speed built in to the wheel otherwise I could have sent it to you to try. I had the non coaster brake version which I assume is what you were looking at.

    With the duo matic

    Now with 5 speeds

Had my old 1966 Mercian built up with a duo matic for a couple of years. I liked it, did a few centuries on it just took a bit if learning the shift. In the end a combination of the borders being pretty hilly and a knee ligament injury meant I swapped it for a 5 speed sturmey this year and it’s made it much more usable.

I binned the vintage brakes and put some silver tektro dual pivots on as you can get them in a nutted fitting. Will dig out some pics tomorrow when not on my phone.

No real winter project here this year……well other than trying to fit drops to my rigid 67.5(+)er

I’m just in the process of changing my mtb to drops, with a bit of measuring I think it will work with a 60mm 35deg stem. Not putting skinny tyres on though as I already have a cx.

Just trying to find some 25.4 midge bars

My wife has 2 horses so I can pretty much justify as many bikes as I want…as it is I very moderately have 3….though I may be about to change one of them ;)

Did try jones briefly , maybe didn’t give them long enough but cost put me off trying again mostly

    Will pm you

If they are literally just 2mm bigger then should fit but you’ll start having very little mud room!

Just Alex something on superstar on mine , solid trail riding build no racing . Pleaser report back if you try resolutes

So here is the current offending mtb. For now going to try and get hold of some midge bars and a 60x35degree stem and see how it measures up. All suggestions welcome…well cycling related ones

@dantenspeed thanks yeah I was over simplifying it. Stack is the problem
with trying to get drops on my inbred (26″ one ) as it will take a comedy stem to even get the front up to where my cx is and really I wanted higher on an mtb. I suppose sizing down on a flat bar bike makes the reach easier

@oldfart I’m actually sorted with enough bits to make a monster cx work as I have some spare gevenalle shifters but ta. You’ll just end up with a hybrid you know ;)

    Yeah great article that.

I don’t understand how it’s designed for drops and flats? I’m 5’8″ so lets say I should probably have a medium? ett is 595 and headtube is 100

My swiss cross is 540 ett and 130 headtube.

If I look at the swift figues I might aswell try and work drops on to my inbred 589 ett 105 headtube…though the forks are 440 not the 470 of the swift

@tired I like to cruise on the hoods then in to the drops for the fun bits :)

@qwerty look interesting, another one where i’d have to try and make drops work rather than it being made for drops though

@perditus looks nice, out of production though?

@Bez longitude well kind of long and a bit low at the front, not sure about trying to get drops on one

@cozz that stooge looks exactly right, though I’d use flared drops as I am used to them. The stooge is long but high front and 27.5 x 2.8 is no problem. If I could find a mk1 I think I’d be tempted

@tired it’s not just the sweep though, you don’t get a hood position unless you change levers

@jameso @bez I’m used to midge bars on the cx, the genetic look a bit ergo without a round bend, will consider

@munrobiker flat bars I just seem to end up with a lot of pain in my hands, after riding the mtb for 6 weeks instead of the cx I am struggling to open jars :( it’s taken a couple of weeks to settle down. Rode the cx yesterday for 3 hours no problems. ok the mtb is rigid but my cx is to.

pretty much maxed out with a nano 40 on mine. I found the nano an excellent tyre when I did the reiver (on a different frame)

    ps. Ritchey not Ritchie!

I love threads with epicyclo’s bikes always something interesting :)

Anyway I ride a cx race bike with 40mm tyres crammed in because I just like the bike. One day I will sneak a drop bar 29er in to the shed to, maybe for my 50th (2 years away). Soma Wolverine is top of my want list.

Control tech terminator plugs add 20mm per side, available for mtb and road. I have some on midge bars to make the drop extension much nicer

Just dug mine out the shed for another try on my rigid mtb as I increasingly just don’t get on with flat bars to the point I hardly want to ride that bike

I wish they’d spaced the logos so your stem didn’t cover the e of fleegle and the o of on one though!

Still riding my 853 to PeterPoddy (also cracked chainstay and fixed)

It’s now my rigid 67.5+ er, bombproof bikepacking bike (not that I have any other MTB so it’s also used for anything else to)

But yeah the ‘brand’ seems a mess nowdays

Sounds like you are sorted then. Weird to come on here and see mention of Lilliesleaf as I live there. It’s pretty sleepy round here.

Most everything about is CX bikeable apart from the lumpier bits of the Eildons

This would give you an idea of some of the trails round here

Sorry for your loss, basically took me a year to get over loosing my dog before I felt able to get another.

seem to be no local dogs but vanloads of fresh arrivals from Spain, Cyprus and Romania which I am quite wary about

Why are you wary? They are just rescue dogs needing a home. The rescues in those countries just couldn’t cope without rescues here taking dogs.

I got my dog straight from a rescue in spain, which basically meant I saw a photo and a few notes then paid a few hundred quid for his transport. I didn’t get to meet him till he turned up. He’s an awesome wee dog though.

Tied up in a box and thrown in a bin as a pup with his sister and mum. Foreign rescues really need help.

Are you planning to make any money from it?

No, that specifically is what I think is wrong with events. That and removing the actual adventure from adventures…

We’ve just run Tweed Cross under TLI but I thought there’d be too many rules. I’ll get a look at them cheers.

Imagine something like the Dirty Reiver (different area) but you just get a GPX file and a group start, no signs, no timing, no food, no badges, no entry fee. What could possibly go wrong ;)

I still have some bits of route to double check. It will probably just end up being my personal training loop for the Dirty Reiver and Guerilla Gravel 200 will remain a figment of my deranged imagination.

@twicewithchips it only seems possible to validate completion with a fairly simple route shape. An off road gravel event is a rather complex wiggle about and I don’t see how you could prove someone hadn’t shortcut parts. There aren’t really shops either.

I was thinking more 1) but just wondered what the potential outcome is if something happened. I’m thinking big gravel ride here so sort of low risk unless people get lost in a forest and are never seen again.

Wingnut splitback, just big enough for everything I want to carry, light and accessable side pockets, really comfy.
